Let's be straight on this: I LOVE Blizzard's games. Love them. I've been playing World of Warcraft for years, Starcraft, Hearthstone ... you name it.

But I'm really not impressed by this one. Now, this is coming from a Dota player, but the pay scheme seems like a flagrant money pit. You're only given a few characters for free; the rest you have to buy, and it's pretty slow going if you're going to do it with the in-game currency. The gameplay, to me, doesn't have the gritty tactical feel like Dota - it's more of a "plow ahead, spam all your skills and pray you have the highest numbers" kind of thing. There are no items, but there is a lot of customization in trait paths, so you theoretically can play every game differently. There are different modes and different maps, and these sort of mini events pop up as you are playing that add some variety.

Put all that together, and it feels a bit too trigger-happy and hectic for me. I know I'm going to keep playing it from time to time, but it hasn't taken my focus away from Dota at all, so that's saying something. But these are just my opinions!

That first part sounds a lot like Fates Forever on the iPad, which I enjoyed overall, but that part really made it a grind. That said, the rest makes it sound pretty neat. Is there less of an emphasis on cooperation? Because that's kinda what keeps me from playing these games - having to cooperate with people who really have no intention of cooperating with me...so if I can focus more on myself and what I do, and just let everybody do their own thing, that'd be fantastic.

In fact, I'm surprised there's no 4-person free-for-all mode in a game like this...

I think you would like it, then. I'd definitely say there is less pressure to cooperate intensely like in Dota. The game very much revolves around using your character's skills often to the point of becoming a singular wrecking ball, so I think for a couple of the characters there is the potential to do quite well all on their own.

But yea, from the modes I'm seeing so far, there is no "free-for-all" per say. Every map has a specific mini event that happens from time to time, although you are free to ignore those events if you want to, but it will come back to bite you.

For example, in general, you have the same goal as something like Dota: push to the other side of the map and kill all of the enemy buildings. But on one map, there is this event where underground mines full of undead open up, and you have to journey inside and slay as many as possible within a certain amount of time. The number of undead that your team slays goes into a "spell" that resurrects a golem that will then march with your team. If you ignore the event, your golem will be pretty weak and the enemy team's may be much stronger. That kind of stuff.

It does have that loveable Blizzard polish to it. Everything feels really good, no doubt about it. But having to pay for more characters is a HUGE turn-off and also why I've never played LoL. I always loved Dota for actually being free - you have EVERYTHING you need to play the game without spending a dime; you can pay a dollar if you want a pretty hat, though.

LoL is fine in terms of "buying characters" because you always have plenty to choose from for free, out of the gate. Looking at Heroes of the Storm, it does seem a bit like Fates Forever where there's a small pool of free characters that they rotate every regularly.

But thanks for your response. It does sound like a game that would be fun for a while. I liked Fates Forever a lot despite the paywall.

@CanisWolfred: The game compared to DotA and LoL is built more for casual players so the emphasis on team work is to a lessar degree. I am in the same boat as you where I don't like team up with groups with people I don't know just to listen to them scream and yell and curse at you for being a noob or what not. That said I tend to do my own thing but stay consistent with the goal.

For example I will keep marching forward with my troops down a lane towards the enemies capital I guess you would call it which in a way helps in the end. If one of the side objectives comes up like the golem one that @rallydefault mentioned depending on what I am doing I will go and help out there. But yeah as long as you are actually trying to move the team forward and not just running around being a dumb*** you can do quite well in this game. A few of the time I played the assassin class and just hid out and watched what was going on and then for example if I saw a teammate being over whelmed I would pop out from my hiding spot and help.

They also have or will have not sure if they put in yet a ranked style of game play for more hardcore players but then they also have casual setting where you can just be put into random groups and play a match or two heck they even have a mode where you can have the CPU control the rest of your teammemebers and you be the only person.

As far as buying characters with money that is only one option. You get in game currency as well (like Hearthstone) that you can use to unlock other characters if you don't wish to pay with real money. Also I think that some characters also unlock for you when you reach certain levels. Paying real money is just there for people who don't want to wait. I unlocked quite a few characters while I was in the Alpha and for awhile there I was in a losing streak. There are even objectives that you can do in each match to give you some extra currency so even if you don't win the match you can get a good amount of in game currency.

Basically if you have ever wanted to play DotA or LoL or have and the hardcore community has turned you off from it like me, or just don't want to sink in the amount of time that some of those players do then Heroes of the Storm is just for you. When I play I can jump right in and start and leave when I have to. The few questions I have asked the community I have been answered with courtesy responses nothing like what do you mean you don't know how to do ___ you freakin noob.

I say give it a try man I was kinda afraid that the teamwork aspect would screw me over since I will be honest I can't afford as much time as others in this type of game nor am I that hardcore, but I am having a blast with it and will be getting it when it launches. The tutorial is great if you have never played this type of game before and it teaches you what you need to know. The games are nice and not long at all I think the longest is 30 minutes and thats if you get in a stalemate and time expires, but each game you feel rewarded nicely for the time you played which is nice for a casual player.

Sorry for the long post I hope that answered all your questions though.

Good post, @Tasuki. I actually just came out of a game where I played as Sgt. Hammer at Dragon Shrine and it was pretty fun. Teammates were super nice, too.

Like I said, it is a fun game, and you can have A LOT more fun with it by yourself than you can with Dota. The free characters do rotate, and that's nice, but I do feel spoiled coming from a game where you get all the characters for free, no questions asked. I know I can spend time getting the in-game gold, but you have to admit it is at a pretty slow pace. I would say you can get around 7,000 gold every 10 hours or so, and most characters cost 7,000 or more. And you have... gosh... a ton of characters. So there you have it; I guess it all depends on your perspective and the time you have to give.

Well right now they have weekly sales going on and you can buy heroes in bundles like right now a bundle with 8 heroes along with a few skins for those heroes is going for $40. They also do rotate which heroes are free weekly as well.

Sounds good. I might have to try this, then.

Sorry to dig this back up, but you guys really got me back into this game by just asking about it those couple weeks ago. So for anyone else who might see this now: my opinion has totally changed; I LOVE this game.

I was a big Dota 2 player (and I still hop in for a match here and there), but I'm now level 26 in Heroes (40 is max currently) and probably have somewhere around 50-60 hours put into it. It's awesome. SO much better than I initially thought (see above).

It's weird, because it's almost the total opposite of what I thought during my first few matches (which I guess is how most games go, right? And why you actually NEED to play something before you can judge it). This MOBA, in a weird way and even moreso than something like Dota or League, REQUIRES teamwork. You MUST play as a team or you will fail. There is no room for lone wolves that farm the jungle for 15 minutes and come out as a god to wreck face. The objective play is absolutely necessary, and though the game lacks items, this need for map manipulation and skill tailoring more than makes up for it in a strategic sense.

The action is more frequent and faster than Dota. You can use hero abilities often (and you should), and cool stuff like Falstad flying across the map instead of having a traditional mount and Hammer's "siege mode" are unique mechanics that I haven't seen done yet. There's TONS of Blizzard "charm," too, so if you've grown up playing Blizzard's games even a little bit, you'll see and hear lots of cool nods to the company's history (I like when the Lost Vikings sing the game's theme song when they're in the boat).

Just thought I'd update this for anyone interested. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the update. I honestly forgot about this game. I'll have to give it another look, assuming my Blizzard account doesn't get locked because I'm using it for the first time in two months...you know, like it did the last time I tried to use it...

No problem. Definitely check it out when you can. And there's really no downside; it's totally free. I haven't spent a cent on the game yet and I'm up to 7 heroes owned, and that's with purchasing some of the higher-priced heroes. You have to stay on top of the dailies if you want to keep the return up, though.

I am waiting for them to release Sylvanas WIndrunner once they do that I will probably play this game alot more. I am hoping that she is next since they just released The Lost Vikings.

Sylvana will be cool. I'd love to see Varian Wrynn or even someone like Medivh. They have a lot of stuff they can do from Diablo, too. Like Cain... if they could think of some interesting way to make Cain into a hero that would be awesome!

I'm interested in the game, but not interested enough to drop £30 for it yet. Besides, I'm still having a lot of fun playing through Warlords of Draenor and a few other games, so adding on another game to play as well would be overcooking it a bit. But I'll definitely keep it on my radar.

It is. The founders pack is just a pack of heroes and skins for a special price for a limited time.
