It's not wise to buy a game without renting it first, but I have gotten lucky once or thrice. The first one was Zelda. I bought it because gold cartridges look cool. Next was Chrono Trigger. I thought it looked like Secret of Mana and it was made by Squaresoft, so I bought it. I was disappointed at first since it wasn't an action RPG but ended up liking it more than SoM. Another likable game I took a gamble on was Dragon Force. I mail ordered that one because it had cool artwork on the box and in the magazine ads. It wasn't what I was expecting but I liked it so much, I ended up beating it with each character a few times.
Probably 90% of the games i bought back in the NES days.
"Castlevania? So i fight Dracula or something? Yeah, ok."
"What's this? Metal Gear? The guy on the cover looks like Kyle Reese. Good enough for me!"
"Mega Man? Hmm, he's not just a man, he's mega. I am so hypnoitized by the horror of the box cover, i ... must ... buy!"
Etc.
Etc.
Back in the pre-Internet days I usually rented a game first before I bought it. Unless the game was extremely cheap (and this is true today as well) I don't think I've ever bought a game without knowing anything about it.
well for me i usually always buy the game i heard about or know about already but im sure theres been a few times here and there the last i can remember was buying catherine for xbox i had tried the demo seems rly odd to me some puzzle type game yet some how it had this story to it so i got the game when it came out so far i never heard anyone play it

That's how it usually went back in da dayz! ...Especially for what would become one of my all-time favorites: SUPER DODGE BALL on NES! I loved dodge ball at recess! What?! SUPER dodge ball?! Sold!

Yes, and one of those many games was Wario Land Shake It! I read no reviews and bought it on launch day with no expectations or impressions. I was pleasantly surprised.
Just for you. "I'm just a musical prostitute, my dear." - Freddie Mercury
Animal Crossing. It sounded like some lame puzzle game, but it got good reviews. I bought it and was instantly addicted.
Castlevania was another. I played my friend's Dawn of Sorrow when I was like, 11 and thought it was too hard. I picked up Aria of Sorrow and Harmony of Dissonance a couple years later, and I was hooked.
