So because I got bored of waiting for the Nintendo Direct, I decided to pick up one of these. Does anyone else have one? (I saw there was a thread for the GPD Win).
It's a portable that runs the Android operating system and can emulate anything up to the PSP and Dreamcast apparently (although I take it that some of the more advanced games won't run well on those emulators).
The thing I'm wondering (it hasn't arrived in the post yet) is how many native Android games can it also run? Will I have access to the whole Google Play Store? Cos there's great stuff on there, if it can be configured to use a controller.
Yes it has a touch screen. But it also lets you simulate the touch controls by assigning them to buttons, so you can play most things with the regular analog sticks and buttons.
That's what I'd mostly want to do. Here's someone running the android version of KOTOR for example. Pretty damn cool. Apparently some android games are designed to only run in portrait mode though. Dragon Quest 8 for example apparently won't run on a landscape screen, which is kinda dumb.
I assume it should be good to play anything that doesn’t depend on a phone form factor and is compatible with physical buttons. If the controller bit is identified the same way as a Bluetooth controller.
For example, Stardew Valley, Final Fantasy IV-VI, Farming Simulator, Lego movie games, Steam Link, etc.
@Dezzy that would probably be a better option. You could also stream the PC version via Steam Link. But the PSP version is better tbh.
Anyway, I don't think you would be able to control the mobile version effectively without it being annoying or having to touch the screen anyway, because I'm being literal here, the mobile version of the game has no native controller support, and it expects you to tap specific parts of the screen to do things like select your actions and explore menus.
I've watched quite a few youtube videos on examples like this, and what they say in quite a few of them is that it does work but you need to switch to touch screen for things like menus.
That's a fine compromise if it's the only way to play a game. Something like KOTOR isn't available to play handheld (with buttons) in any other way, so that's fine with me.
So after much delay, presumably due to the C-Virus, this finally arrived.
Really impressed so far. This runs PSP, Dreamcast, DS, PS1 roms all perfectly out of the box. For some reason N64 has trouble and you need play with a lot of settings to get it running well.
Also got various Android games running nicely. Then I got some old PC games running with some Android wrappers people have written for them.
So I now have a portable that runs Crisis Core, Skies of Arcadia, Half-life and KOTOR. What an awesome range of stuff. And most of the emulators render at higher resolutions. So Crisis Core is at 2x the PSP resolution. Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS are at like 3x the DS resolution.
Ner they only released KOTOR 1 on Android for some reason.
Jade Empire is available too.
My thing so far is running old games with much better settings. I'm playing Mario Kart DS in 720p and with extreme anti-aliasing. Makes it look insanely good.
