RE4 wasn't really that scary for me. Just the first time you meet the blind guy with the long nails freaked me out. I watched SH1 and it didn't really scare me... granted it's different from playing, but still. I don't usually play horror games because I have a weak constitution (!)

The one game that really scared me was Doom 3. I got about an hour in. Locked into a tight room in the pitch black with a monster gnawing at you and you can hear it but can't see it, only illuminated by muzzle flare, then down tight corridors with aliens climbing down the ceiling to get you, and each door you open you know there's something awful lurking behind it and it just fills you with dread. I had 'change weapon' assigned to my scroll wheel and I'd keep accidentally switching back to my flashlight when trying to shoot, ending up frantically attempting to whack the aliens to death with it

I was doing ok though with all that, a bit shaky, but then I hear a whisper... 'help me'... and I look up... and I see a lynched body hanging from the ceiling. That was it for me. I fearquit.

Now Playing: Bioshock

I second Eternal darkness. That game was seriously underrated and freaky as hell. The sanity effects were really cool and disturbing. It wasn't scary in a BOO kind of way but more of a mess with your head way. How many games have you played that tried to fake you out and made you think your save file was being erased? Now that's scary! Damn I wish they would have made a sequel. That would be awesome.

Eternal Darkness was defintiely scary in a "freak-out" kind of way. Silent Hill 2 and 4 were both disturbing-scary. The first time i played RE gave some scares, and RE3 was scary when Nemesis would randomly show up to kick your arse. Going back a ways, the original Metroid theme music was creepy (check out the GameCenterCX ep where Arino plays it and mentions the same thing!) and the first time encountering a Metroid freaked the hell out of us as kids.

The Shpydarloggery
She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

The Silent Hill series, Bioshock, and for some odd reason, The Parasite Eve series...Res. Evil 2 scared me a little but for the most part it didn't get to me the way those other games did. Bioshock, I never really jumped but some of the scenes will haunt me for the rest of my days.

Objection

Ravenholm in Half-Life 2's running headcrab monsters are pretty unnerving and quite deadly. I recently picked up RE1 for GCN (yes, finally) and got to this "Lisa" everyone mentioned in this thread. Um, yeah, she has a whole "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" thing going on with her. O.o I need to get back and finish that game. (Still at Lisa's first appearance bcause new games distracted me.

I don't play a lot of scary games, but there's a few bits in the games I have played that gave me the chills. The military training facility in Portal was very creepy. Dark, blood-splattered corridors filled with droids that can shoot you down in seconds, and a portal gun, some metal boxes and your wits are all the weapons you have to take them down. Not to mention they probably have the creepiest voices ever. Though GlaDoS's introduction to the area was hilarious.

The scenes in Metroid Fusion with SA-X chasing you were also pretty scary, especially the one part in the forest area, where you have to run away from her and she's armed with an Ice Beam that can kill you in only a few shots. It's still the scariest handheld game I've ever played...

Yes, This. I didn't comment on this thread way back when it started because I can't recall any games really scaring me, but that whole part of Resident Evil 4, when you first see the Regenerator and all those labs with the crazy experiments, that was scary.

There's one thing that scared me in a different sense... Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. The look and sound of your gameboy glitching up isn't a nice one.
Not that it was very scary.

Sanitarium for PC was really creepy they should really re-release it, it might work on DS.

Sanitarium was awesome. I still have it somewhere in storage with all of my ancient PC games. A remake/re-release would be sweet.

System Shock 2 -- that is a wonderful game if you can stand the tension. But the scene I remember best is from Thief 2, in which there was this haunted pirate ship... enough said.

SS2 is possibly my favorite game. SHODAN is the scariest antagonist by far. Just her voice and dialogue can send chills down your spine.

I never play horror games or watch horror movies, but when I was younger, some things really scared me. The mad piano in SM64 still sorta creeps me out today, and I was always scared of any game where something is chaasing you, and you have to run; you can't kill it. A perfect example is Sonic adventure DX: director's cut. When you had to play as the pink hedgehog and run from the robot, I was to scared to play. I agree with you warioswoods. In a scary movie, you see the one being attacked. In a game, you ARE the one being attacked.
The scariest game I've played for a while is my brother's game: Dora's carnival adventure. That game scarred me for my life.

Actually, that part was pretty creepy for sure.

I purchased Dead Space recently but haven't even taken the plastic off it. They had the Dead Space cartoon available on Netflix Instant Queue so I watched it on my XBox. I couldn't even finish the cartoon! Scary stuff.

My scariest moment: Diablo 1. When you get to that little square room on the second level. There's corpses stuck to the wall...organs and blood and filth all over the place...and then you hear:
"AHHHHHH FRESH MEAT!!!!!"
Then The Butcher comes after you. The first time, I never even got a chance to see him, I just turned and ran like hell. It took a lot to work up the courage to finally go creeping back.

Promise you won't laugh at me?
When I was little, I was easily scared of monsters. But the more I grew up, the less scared of monsters I get. I'm pretty much not scared nowadays.
When I was very little, I'm embarrassed to say that MediEvil for the PSX scared me. But, several years later, I played through some of it (at a friend's house), and I thought it was not bad.
It embarrasses me to think about it.

I'm even more embarrassed to say that Metroid Fusion scared me shortly after I got it on Christmas of 2002. Must've been the music that played during the time I found out about the SA-X. I haven't played it again 'til sometime in 2006 or 2007.

@starboy nothing to be ashamed about. I forgot to mention one game. When I was little, and I landed on a bowser space on Mario Party 2, I would always have my dad do the roulette, and I would hide behind the couch.

Just let it happen.
