Oh, how could I forget Fallout 3? Some parts were just cheap thrills from things jumping out at you, but the desolate atmosphere got to me at times -- especially since I'd just read The Road.

Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

Not many games scared me except back then when I was very young and tried FPS for some odd reason. (like Duke Nukem on the N64)
Anyways the thing that still scares me today is that stupid Mad Piano from Super Mario 64. XD

Chicken Brutus, Alone in the Dark was awesome back in the day. In fact, I have the soundtrack from the original game in my iTunes library. Sick! Sticking to the (old school) PC scene here, the Aliens .wad file for Doom did startle me half to death on more than a few occasions.

Doom, Silent Hill 2 are really good. Dead Space was really amazing on how eerie it was. Looking around you're shoulder every now and then. There are so many good moments in that game, but I would have to say being out in space and not hearing anything was the best. Or the alien you can't kill unless u do "certain" things was awesome too.

I would say Silent Hill 1-3 would definately be the scariest games I've ever played. The first one especially. The RE games are definately creepy, but they just don't stack up to Silent Hill. Eternal Darkness was a good game, I just didn't think it was very scary. More of an adventure game, honestly. Oh and Objection, I've played through SH2 many times, but I can't think of a bathroom scene off the top of my head. Which location in the game is it in?

EDIT: Actually, one of the scariest games I can remember as a kid is Shadowgate for the NES. It's not scary to me now, but when I was younger the music really creeped me out.

I played RE1 for the first time about 5 yrs ago. At first everything was ok. I was a little freaked out with a few things here and there, but for the most part, I was keeping it together. That was when I walked into a room and there was a glass wall (mind you I'd never played RE before, so I was a bit naive). I kept looking at the glass but nothing happend. Went over to a desk or a shelf or something, I really can't remember, but right then CRASH, a monster thingy comes busting through the glass and scared the sh$t out of me!

Funny thing is, I have a cop who lives 2 doors down from me. Him and I were talking one day and I happen to mention RE to him. He looks at me with his eyes lite up and says, quote, "That game scared the **** out of me". Right then and there, I knew I wasn't alone.

All the other RE never got to me much after I got through that one. The first is always the hardest to muscle through. Nightmares? Yeah, I guess you could say that.

The Resident Evil Remake on Gamecube when you meet Lisa for the first time. Second is Silent Hill 2 when Pyramid Head appears while your hiding in a closet.

@chicken Brutus - I don't remember what level, but there is a really creepy creature later. I'll be interested in seeing what you think about that when you've got farther. I don't want to ruin anything. Part of the creepiness is how it sounds.

Silent Hill 3 was the scariest game I've played through. No other game can compete with the creepy sounds that Akira Yamaoka creates for the Silent Hill series. I've gotta say that Fatal Frame is very scary though and the Resident Evil REmake was damn scary when you meet Lisa in the game.

It was bathroom in the hospital in SH2 if I remember correctly. A very small, startling bathroom.

Every time I'm walking alone and something attacks me from behind, I jump.

Oh and Dead Space scared me silly. So much, in fact, I couldn't even finish the demo. lol

Somehow I agree with you. Metroid II was an eerie gameplay experience- it gave a great sense of aloneness and the world seemed very dark and just downright creepy. I think the fact that it was on the Gameboy really added to the atmosphere.

As for the topic, I don't scare easily, but I'd have to go with RE4 and Dead Space.

@ Adam
The Road is one hell of a sick and twisted book
I'd go with Silent Hill 1, though Parasite Eve 2, Resident Evil 1 & 2, and Eternal Darkness have all messed with my head on a late night.

I agree with Fallout 3, anyone been ambushed by a Yao Guai or a Deathclaw? Or been inside the Deathclaw Sanctuary? I hear the Dunwhich Building is pretty horrible too.

Silent Hill series is an obvious.

However, I'll add on that noone will expect: Final Fantasy VIII

The Deep-Sea Research Centre. First of all, its all the way in the corner of the map, hidden away. When you finally go there, you have the creepy glowing reactor thing, that unnerved me to no end. Once thats all done though, you can come back and go deeper, and it gets creepier. I did not like the trip down, especially with the background stroy on the place your given and the forced battles that ignored the "No Encounter" ability. The worst of all though was the end, where you activate that machine, and bring something up. The suspense and ominous feel is soul-crushing there. Then your thrown into battle with some giant monstrosity with a very intense battle theme, and more often than not, he'll murder you swiftly.

If I ever get a copy of the game to keep, I'll not be looking forward to that part.

Adding to that, the game world itself has a lot of creepy things, the radio wave blockage (The source of it is quite unnerving), the giant crater on Centra and the desolation all around it, etc etc.

All Hail The Box!

Well, only one game has ever scared me. I played Fallout 3 a lot and I'm surprised any of you found it in the least bit scary. I didn't. I just found it more frantic than scary.

FEAR 2 was one that got me, although I haven't played FEAR. I just have the demo and it's pretty scary from time to time, although it's dumbed down at regular intervals to shoot people down as is the general gaming craze. But I'd like to play the original as I've heard that it's much scarier than the second.

I have Resident Evil 5 too, which still holds the title, in my opinion, for least informative back cover as all it says is, "Fear you can't forget", which is technically true as there was none whatsoever. That game was, like Fallout 3 at times, franticas opposed to scary.

I need more horror games. The Grudge on Wii could be good, I guess. I still thank this site for informing me about it.
