We talk about games that are consoles, handhelds, retro, retail......but as far as I've noticed, no one talks about free games at all. So this thread is talking about games that are free or free to pay at the very least.

So recently, I started playing Treasure Adventure game and so far, its average at best with mediocre quality and nothing special at all. It does have impressive visuals but that's just about it.

I feel like Studio Pixel is the only one that actually got a free game done great. Not only does it feel like a game but it also feels like a retail game too and its one of my favorite games of all time period! I could say the same for La- Mulana but that game is subjective. Some love it, some hate it and I'm one of those that hate it.

I don't think we'll ever find quality free games like Cave Story no matter how you look at it though I could be wrong.

Only ones I've played were the Pokemon ones, and one on the iPhone (which sucks because of microtransactions and ads), so...I dunno...don't really care for them.

I will play Unreal Tournament when it is finished and I am not against Dota 2 / Team Fortress 2.

That it is it basically.

(I do use the text from the original Freeware Cave Story as I think it is much better but the latest PC Commercial version of the game).

Punch Quest was F2P for a bit I think but I have the DRM Free Humble Bundle version. (Now for Android it is adware and iOS paid).

I usually don't play F2P games, but I found a really freakin' awesome Freeware game a few months back! It's called Destinaton Sol. It's a 2D Open world Shoot 'Em Up Roguelike. That and a few mobile games are it really.

Some devs like Nitrome seem to do F2P games correctly. Silly Sausage in Meat Land is a fun free game that I even bothered to 100% it. Its that good.

I have discovered the brutality that is Dwarf Fortress. My first time playing adventure I got lost, I was then attacked by two lions. I managed to knock them unconscious but had trouble finishing them off; My sword got lodged in one of them and I didn't know how to remove it, so I started bashing them with my shield. I was bashing them in the necks, skulls, their bodies, limbs and even their eyes. Their bodies were a mangled mess, but still they lived, and as I continued to beat them with my shield I started to wish harder and harder that they would just give in and die so their suffering would end. Finally, when I nearly couldn't take it anymore, one died and the second soon followed. I then went to the river. Not knowing how to carefully descend into the water, I tried jumping in. I was then attacked by alligators and drowned.

Here are a few good truly free options on Android (no in-app-purchases).

el - A "Runner" style game with actual levels. It has a storybook artstyle with a silhouette presentation, and glide through levels avoiding obstacles (which get really thick & heavy in later levels). Even the ads are optional (if you fail a level, you have the option to restart at the place you died if you watch an ad, but it's not enforced, and it doesn't break the game, for if you fail a second time, you have to go back to the level's start). Don't let the cutesy graphics fool you either, as it has a twist ending!

Amy the Starry Archer - Game influenced by the flying sections of Kid Icarus: Uprising. There's a rectangle in the lower right of the screen that you move your thumb across to aim (your reticule appears on the part of the screen proportionate to the part of the rectangle your thumb is on), and you simply let go to fire. You fly through the levels automatically, and in most levels you dodge fire by simply tapping a "button" on the lower left of the screen, though there are a few levels with free movement that require you to move around the screen by swiping in the direction you want to go. Has an astronomical theme, with great visuals for a truly free title. I think it does feature a bit more ads than the above, but at most they take place between levels, so they don't interfere with gameplay (again, I believe you can also optionally watch an ad to restore life if you fail once).

Shooting Hero! - A cartoony wild west shooting gallery style game (all targets are cardboard cutout people). There's one level with three segments, and you aim for the top score by finishing as soon as possible, avoiding getting shot, shooting as many armed targets as possible, and not shooting unarmed targets (there is an online leaderboard). Targeting is gyro controlled (your reticule is always center screen), and you shoot by tapping the screen (tap the revolver on the bottom left to reload). There is an ad at the bottom of the screen constantly, but it stays phone sized even on my 10 inch tablet, so it's pretty unnoticeable on larger devices (it's like a tiny rectangle, lol).
