Square Enix is all about making the best^ game possible regardless of what is required. So they overspend on nearly everything they do.

Anyway, I thought the main reason they plugged Bravely Default (and incidentally why they were so gung-ho about making a sequel) is that they want it to be a parallel companion to the main Final Fantasy series so people will stop wanting the main series to return to its retro roots. So it kinda splits the timeline like

FF 1-6 -> 4 Heroes of Light -> Bravely Default -> Bravely Default sequel

meanwhile

FF 7-15

^best is subjective.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

What is it with JRPG's and wanting me to play co-op with AI bots? FF 13, FF 15, Xenoblade, Dragon's Dogma, etc... Either give me direct control of my party, or let me play co-op with real people, or make it have a party of one. I hate having things done for me.

Sure it seems to be the new default JRPG combat system but I wouldn't mind if it was done well. I mean, the Star Ocean and Tales of series did it since the SNES era and improved on the formula game after game. You can completely customise you party and their actions (stay close or far, how much mana you use, what you prioritize, etc.). The problem with nearly all recent JRPGs is that you have absolutely no control over their actions AND they are terminally stupid.
In FFXIII, why does Vanille stay near this giant behemoth when she is a range attacker? MOVE! In Ni no Kuni why does the IA burn though their mana whenever they can even when I change characters? STOP!
Kingdom Hearts found another way to do this: the IAs are meatshields or heals/grants buff but don't really do much, the player is doing all the damage .

Which brings me to (awesome transition):

Kingdom Hearts and Secret of Mana both used very simple systems with most actions mapped to one or two buttons that changed based on context and how you used it. It's possible that FFXV could keep things interesting without using a bazillion buttons.

You are absolutely right. KH2 is probably my favorite in the series and uses only 3 buttons (attack, dodge and contextual action). We'll see.

I would literally buy a PS4 just to play this game. The music in the trailer was amazing and I cant wait to play it.

The game looks great... but I am very concerned that Noctis and his friends are incredibly generic and that the game doesn't know what it wants to be.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Why is it that I feel an "Eric Cartman rants pointlessly about JRPGs" vibe coming along... ? :/

It has a REALLY bad story and forgettable characters. XIII is not a good game.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

I actually didn't outright hate the game, but found it quite dull, but anyway:

1) It's just a long series of hallways. There's no exploration at all until briefly in Gran Pulse.
2) The story is 40 hours of convoluted nonsense.
3) None of the characters are particularly appealing. They range from boring (Sazh, Fang) to annoying (Snow, Lightning) to infuriating (Hope, Vanille).
4) It basically plays itself. You can win the game with auto battle.
5) The battle and character progression systems are a massive step backwards, reducing the job systems of FF3 and FF5 down to 6 classes that all do 1 very specific thing, and watering down the Sphere Grid and License Board of FF10 and FF12 so that you don't even have to think about what skills and stats to invest in when. It's just a straight line that you pump points into to make you feel like you have control over your character progression when you really don't.
6) The weapon upgrade system is one of the worst implemented JRPG upgrade systems ever, and again waters down the mechanics from previous games.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

I don't really agree with that splitting of the series at all. I think FF6 and FF7 are closer to each other than the rest. And I think FF9 is probably closer to FF4 than the rest.
Your criteria seems to be more about how close it is to 'traditional fantasy' (the definition of which usually seems to require some likeness to medieval europe). That's a fairly trivial factor in my mind. I'd be much more inclined to group them based on gameplay and narrative similarities.

Gratia Mundi according to the video you linked...btw, I google translated it, and the detect language kept thinking it was indonesian, yet it didn't have anything it translated to. It's freakin' Latin, man.

This arrangement makes me love this song even more. The instrumentation and balance is so amazing. I want this game so bad if every song will be handled with the amount of care this one got.

If anyone hasn't seen it, a new trailer's up: http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/12/final_fantasy_xv_retur...

Despite my better judgement, I can't help feeling they might just get the series back on track with this. This has clearly got huge potential. Seems like it'll ultimately be decided by the characters and the story.

I'm waiting with baited breath still. Actually I think there's been a few trailers? Or am I thinking of the Type-0 trailers? Anyways, they both look great to me.

Final Fantasy XV is impressing me even though I still have worries about the characters. It actually has graphics I wished Xenoblade Chronicles X had but its whatever. Both will be amazing JRPGs in their own right.
