You're gonna need to be more specific. Who has this self pity?

By a happy chance, I'm currently half way through the Vita remaster.

I think the point is that there are various aspects to good writing. 1 is just the general plot. Ok, most of the final fantasy plots are weird, occasionally nonsensical, and often contrived in the final 3rd.
But then there's how well it's presented, the pace, dialog and character interaction. I think most Final Fantasies are excellent in this respect.

I won't disagree, but plot is kind of the corner stone if the story, especially plot-driven stories that most FF games are. The whole thing falls apart if its too weak. Ironiocally FF15 is "supposed" to be a character-focused narrative. I don't buy it for a minute, but if it does turn out to be true, then I'd say plot would be less important enough to forgive it if its a little weak.

I can't believe I got to use that gif so soon!

Seriously, even the shopkeeper has a sappy story to tell. It gets absolutely rediculous.

Well hold on, it surely only applies when it's used gratuitously. I think when you've just destroyed the only known means to save the world, and are desperately trying to find an alternative, lest you be blamed for ruining the future of the world, you're allowed to get a bit down. C'mon now!

I don't entirely agree. I think the plot CAN be the corner stone. But I think if all of the other elements excel themselves, a bad plot isn't the end of the world. I think the Tales games tend to have quite bad plots (I've only played 3) but they're rescued by having very likeable characters and great pacing.

Last I checked, the shopkeeper didn't do that. And there's being down, and then there's the constant parade of pity parties. I only have so many f***s to give, and this game uses them all up in 10 minutes, and keeps whining for more for 15 hours straight.

They're also character driven narratives where the plot tends to rely more on the characters' actions. Of course the plot is less of an issue there. But very few Final Fantasies are like that. In fact, a lot of games aren't like that, and could actually stand to take a page out of Tale's playbook.

But as I said, surely the definition needs to include the stipulation that it's unnecessary in some way. You're making it out as if they're far too self-pitying for the situation. For the first half of the game, they think they're leading Yuna to her death. For the second half, they think they might've ruined the entire future of the world.
So it sounds like you're more annoyed that the plot requires having whining characters! Of course they're gonna whine. Although I really don't think many of them do that much, you may have to find me some quotes.

Just because they're justified doesn't matter when it's constant and poorly written.

But to be fair, I hated large chunks of the original Evangelion series, and it is WAAAAAAY better written (mostly) than that game.

Look, you have to juxtapose the sad stuff with the happy times. FFX didn't exactly do that. It tried to, but in that it put all the happy scenes in one half, and made the rest almost entirely sad and angry. It's very difficult to deal with and relate to a situation where the characters themselves are being frustrated almost constantly. At some point, enough is enough. You have to move on. When things get tough, you gotta get tougher. But after 15 hours, I'm convinced FFX never got over it. FF7 has a similar situation, but focused squarely on Cloud. As annoying as it was, everyone else improved at a reasonable rate, and the story overall was still fairly enjoyable. I didn't finish FFX and I never will. If I have to hear even one more word out of any of those characters from now until the end of the world, it will be too soon.

Xenoblade Chronicles X will blow FF15 sky high... that's assuming it looks slightly worse and plays 10 times better, anyway...

There's a reason scripts for anime and JRPGs are subpar: less than acurate translations of highly convoluted and specific Japanese text.

A golden rule for any game company whose execs are currently swimming in giant pools of cash is that graphics come first, everything else is flushed down the toilet.
