Any 2.5" 9mm HDD will fit (Samsung has a 2TB drive hitting the market next quarter), but I think you're going to need a system transfer in order for it to work. That will be tricky if your fat PS3 is completely dead. May have to contact Sony about that.

I have the slim model and I enjoy it. I think the slim is a better made machine than the super slim. When I was in high school, one of my friends had a super slim model and I remember playing it at a party, and it just looked and felt cheaper.
If you put your hard drive into a new machine, it will format it. You'll lose any and all of your save data because of this.
