So, I've been officially sucked into wanting a portable gaming system. The two options are obviously Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP. I've got to admit, I'm a bit leery about picking up the DS because of the touch screen. Using a Palm T|X at work, it took only about a year of steady use for me to start having problems with the stylus touchscreen. I can see something similar happening with the DS. The collection of games for the DS is a bonus for the Nintendo system (as is battery life), but the ability to watch movies on the PSP is likewise a draw. Obviously it is not an easy decision.

So, from those who own one (or preferably both) system ... let me know why one or the other should be the one I give the most consideration. Thanks.

DS. PSP has barely enough battery power to even play a movie (if it is on a UMD)

From the perspective of only having a ds lite and only having played but never owned a psp, i can honestly say playing the psp didnt make me want it, the DS i feel has more innovative games thanks to its touch screen, and i also think that psp games are games that u can find better versions of on home consoles, since a lot of them are on main home consoles as well. So if u have a home console its not worth it, just get a DS and get a lot of ds exclusive/unique games that havent/cant be remade on other consoles.

You need to look at the games more than anything. See which games interest you the most. Then go from there. The touchscreen on the DS is plenty durable so don't let that stand in your way. And please keep in mind that you're on a Nintendo-related website. :)

And the DS can't play movies at all. Man, the PSP just sucks. Can we get an eye roll smiley in here? :D

Of course, I can't imagine anyone wanting to watch a movie on a handheld, even with the PSP's glorious screen, but it still seems like an odd complaint.

i personally like the library of games on the ds better than the psp game library but you should look at boith and decide which library of games intrest you most and if there are upcoming games on the system that intrest you :)

Thanks for the replies so far folks. My desire to get a handheld is primarily because I do a fair amount of traveling with my work, so having a gaming system handy while I'm stuck in an airport or my hotel would help me pass the time. In this regard, the PSP gets the edge in my book because I can carry music and movies with me and saves me having to carry a second device (MP3 player). I could use my work laptop to watch movies, but that gets cumbersome in the airport. In terms of games, I actually like the lineup of both devices and could live with either one. That's why this decision gets a bit tougher. However, maybe I've kind of talked myself into a PSP with this post. I'm going to have to sleep on it for a while longer. :)

The DS's touchscreen is great. You'll have no problems unless you are one of those kids at Wal-Mart who stab at it as hard as they can.

So DS. There are also many more hits on DS then PSP in my opinion.

My biggest complaint is the lack of a 2nd joystick (or joy-slider-thing on the PSP)

Plus it is so awkward to use the joystick :P

Yea, that thumb stick is weird. I prefer using the D-pad when I can. Nothing beats a good old-fashioned D-pad!

I didn't notice this post earlier, but apparently you didn't read my post either since I said that I don't like watching movies on handhelds, so I guess it's okay.

Their both fantastic systems but if you do get a DS I highly recomend getting a case, wobbling around in your pocket can wear out the L/R buttons, but since the DS is cheaper you still wont be spending as much. The PSP has a nice "suspend play" thing whear you can turn it off and start right wear you left off but has much less batterie life. it might be just mine but the speakers on the PSP suck.

I agree 100% with that L/R button getting worn out thing. Now I need to practically hit the R button with a mallet to get the game to recognize that I'm pressing it.
