Topic: Dragon Quest anime-like pictures?

I'm a fan of Dragon Quest franchise and I'm aware of the anime adaptations of this universe, Dai no daibôken being the most famous one -and not based in any game-, but sometimes when I search things in wikis I see pictures that seem to come from animes that don't really exist.

Can somebody please help me find the origin of things like this?

Chances are it's just art made for the games.

When everything in your game looks like it came out of a Dragon Ball, it's not hard to end up with art that looks like it came from an anime.

Yeah I don’t know either.

@Meowpheel That's what I thought at first, but it doesn't add up. I'm not talking about instruction booklet or cover art or about manga style art, which could be just promotional stuff. They're captures of what it seems to be animated material. For example with Dragon Quest V, which doesn't have an adapted series.

Look, guys, that's what I was meaning. I found several pictures of Dragon Quest V (not only, but especially) that seem anime screenshots, but this game doesn't have any anime adaptation whatsoever.

What the heck is this?

@Moroboshi876 To me that look's like Akira Toriyama's depiction of a part of Dragon Quest V. It's been a couple years since I finished the game (I really should play this one again soon, but I've been addicted the post game in IX) so I don't remember the specifics, but from what I remember it was an important enough part that I could see it getting some official artwork.

So to answer your question, I would say it's art of a scene from the game rather than a random still from some anime we don't know about.

@ReaderRagfish The problem is Toriyama draws pictures in his style and they appear in illustration books and stuff, but these images are clearly from a TV product, and as much as they try to copy Toriyama's style we can tell the difference. Sure, they must have been done by Toei Animation's crew, because they resemble Dragon Ball's anime. A lot.

It can't be pictures from the SNES version of DQV's manual. I doubt it, anyway. That's weird.

@Moroboshi876 I just took a look through the manual online and not only is that picture not there, but the art style of the drawings in the manual and that picture definitely don't match up.

I did a bit of digging and found this:
https://dragon-quest.org/w/index.php?title=File:KazingSpell.p...

It is clearly the same style as the other picture, but the thing is that it shows the hero casting kazing on Nera, and not Bianca. This leads me to believe that it isn't in the same continuity as the other picture, as in the previous picture the kids aren't Nera's. To me, this shows that it can't be from some long lost anime series since the two pictures couldn't have possibly been from the same series without totally messing up the source material. So I still believe they're just random pieces of artwork and not stills from an anime.

However, I would agree with the fact the that the picture looks like Toei Animation, and I still have no clue where it originates from. There's so much obscure Dragon Quest merch in japan that there are dozens of things it could be from.

@ReaderRagfish Right?

I even considered they could come out of some commercial, given the importance of every Dragon Quest release.

@Moroboshi876 As far as I know, most Dragon Quest commercials are live action, including V. There are a few games in the series that have anime cutscenes like IX and the 25th anniversary collection, but those are much better quality than what we're seeing here.

@CanisWolfred Yeah, that's where we've been finding the pictures. At this point I'm pretty sure they're just official artwork, but I still don't know where they came from or why it looks so much like a tv show when there never was one.

Chances are they just requested some stills from some animation company to use as artwork.

Yeah I don’t know either.
