So double fine the guys behind Pyschonauts, brutal legends, and stackling are finding a game through kickstar.
The game is joint roche a point and click by Ron Gilbert in the vein of grim fandango and night of the tentacles. Double fine is also documenting the process as they go. And having a website for donaters to check progress and get their input on the game.
The biggest thing is this could a new avenue for Indies game devs needing a way to fund their projects.
WAT!

That's pretty damn genius, especially considering that the whole project has appeared to only start in less than 24 hours. I would love to see other companies try this stuff.

A lot of those donations were on the back of that publicity. A sizeable chunk probably came from Notch himself.
The best thing about kickstarter is that the game designers know it's a bit rich asking the paying customer to fund the game, and so offer incentives (usually at least a free copy of the game on release) for higher levels of donations. It works well for PC downloadable games because they don't have to consider how many copies to print.
It may well be the future of indie game financing.
@V8_Ninja: It'll work well with well known developers like Double Fine... sure, but everyone else...not so much, no.
@edhe: No, it's not the same game. Notch wants Psychonauts 2 (me too). This Kickstarter is for a point-and-click adventure game...one which I have donated nothing to, but will likely purchase when it hits Steam, well...more like when it goes on sale...
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
@edhe: Pretty easily, don't beat yourself up. 2 days, back to back of Double Fine funding news. *2 days ago, Notch mentioned he'd gladly fund the development of Psychonauts 2 for Double Fine (awesome). *Yesterday, Double Fine started a kickstarter to see if people would be interested in a point-and-click adventure game.

This is very nice. It shows there is a lot of support for the classic adventure games. These were huge at the time of Sierra and Lucasarts and Westwood, and died gradually/abruptly when everybody wanted FPS's all of the sudden, or higher paced action, but the population that likes these games still loves them and willing to support them. Unfortunately, I do believe the Wii platform could be great for these games, and support for that is not strong enough. It will be great if it improves with the Wii U.
Not only does the 3DS come with an SD card, but it also happens to come pre-installed with one, additional dimension.
Amazing, and hopefully will inspire future projects to go this route. I donated $30 myself just now, and the number will surely be hitting $1 million before long, which should send a message to anyone who thinks a classic point-and-click isn't viable anymore.
I'd love to see more game projects started this way. I'm willing to may much more when I know that the proceeds are going straight to the devs, and when my donation means helping to get something off the ground.

Haven't played many point and clicks. I liked Sam and max season 1 and the demos of the monkey Island remakes on xbla. But double fine is one of my favorite devs and getting a game, a soundtrack, and documentary for $30 iz ace.
