Topic: Do You "Need" PlayStation Plus?

Hi All,

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section. I won't be home for Christmas this year so my Boyfriend gave me some of my presents early today. He bought me a PlayStation 3 and a PlayStation 4 and some games I've been going on about (yay!). My Boyfriend and I did not play games in the past but we have friend's with PlayStations and we assumed perhaps wrongly that the PlayStation's online service was free unlike the "Xbox Gold".

I thought "PlayStation Plus" was a sort of V.I.P. program you pay but you get bonuses for doing so deals on games etc no? Anyway when I spoke to my friend who has bought a PlayStation 4 for her son she said you need Plus to get online. I don't think this is true as I've created an account and been to the eShop to check the price of Dynasty Warriors 8 (£54.99 WTF Sony?).

Could someone please tell me what it is PlayStation Plus does and do I need it to buy things? I doubt I'll ever play online multiplayer as the Wii U will always be my main console this gen. The only game I would consider online play for would be "Overwatch" but that's not even released yet and will likely be PC exclusive and if not at least for the near future after launch. Sorry to ramble thank you for your help.

You only really "need" PS+ if you want to play online multiplayer on PS4. Otherwise, it's optional on PS3 and Vita. But it's well worth it for the monthly PS+ games you can download and the discounts on other games you can get.

Kaze_Memaryu

Playstation Plus is only a premium subscription on PS3, and nets you free games every month plus discounts on stuff, that's all.
The PS4 is where it was turned into a scam. On PS4, Playstation Plus is mandatory to play online, no escape. Though the premium stuff is still included, Sony did their best to make the PS4 close to pointless without Playstation Plus, to varying degrees.

The online on PS3 is free, but the online on PS4 needs Plus. You get a ton of free games though. 2 fof PS3 and 2 for PS4 each month. The Vita also gets 2 games a month, and some are cross-buy with PS4 and/or PS3. You should get your money's worth. I subscribe to Plus, and don't really play online, first one I will play online will be Destiny when I get it on Christmas.

You need PlayStation Plus to play games online on PS4, but not on PS3. You do not need a PlayStation Plus subscription to use other online services such as Netflix and the PlayStation Store, only to play games (except from a few MMORPGs which have their own subscription payments)

You get 6 free games every month, two on PS4, two on PS3 and two on Vita. Even if you don't own a Vita this works out well because quite a lot of the Vita PS Plus games are crossbuy so you can play some of them on PS3 or PS4 anyway. You need to go into the PlayStation Store every month to claim these games, they do not get added to your account automatically.

You keep these games as long as your PlayStation plus subscription is active. You can buy the subscription for 30 days (£5.49), 90 days (£11.99) or 365 days (£39.99). You can also get a 14 day trial. If you do not renew the subscription you will lose access to any games you have received for free through PS Plus, but you will gain access to them again after you renew the subscription. You also get a small additional discount to some games which are on sale, which you keep even if you don't renew PS Plus.

The games on PS Plus this month are:
Injustice: Gods Among Us – Ultimate Edition (PS4)
Secret Ponchos (PS4)
Hitman Trilogy HD (PS3)
Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut (PS3)
Final Horizon (PS Vita)
Titan Attacks (PS4/PS3/PS Vita)

To be honest, this month's line up isn't very good and there have been much better games. If you are interested but do not need to play online on PS4 immediately (or want any of those games), I would say wait until next month to see the next set of games.

Thank you all so much for clarifying the situation regarding online play.I don't normally mention people in particular but @Kodeen and espcially @Bulbousaur your posts were excellent.

I won't be home to play my PlayStation until after Christmas so I will leave it until then. I like fighting games (preferably 2D though) I did think of signing up to the free trial to get a free copy of "Injustice" but it's only £18 on Amazon so I would not be saving that much money and would rather have the disc.

Thank you all again for your help oh and @Jaz007 I hope you enjoy Destiny on Christmas day. Might as well wish you all a merry Christmas and happy New Year to.

Best Wishes,

It'd be a good idea to activate your 14 day trial near the end of a month, that way you'll get access to 2 months of games (December and January). New games are announced on the last Wednesday of every month, and released on the first Wednesday of every month.

So activating the trial around the 30th of December, will get you Injustice and the other 5 games on offer, and also January's games when they come on.

Bear in mind that they remove your rights to the games when your PS+ subscription ends, but you'll regain access to them once you start paying, but if you never bought them while they were on offer, you can't get them again.

You don't NEED Playstation Plus but its nice to have especially for the free games. The yearly price for PS+ is $50 which is just 10 dollar less then a game and with you will get at least 2 free games a month for PS4 sometime 3 if they are a cross buy with the Vita. I don't know how many free games you get on PS3 or Vita cause I dont own those. But just the games alone are worth it.

When I got my Vita, there were about 10 or so games that I wanted. Adding up all of the discounts across those games, a one month subscription paid for itself. I paid the 10 bucks for the sub and got around 20 bucks worth of discounts right off the bat.

So if you know there's some games you want to pick up on PSN, check to see if any of them are on sale for Plus members. Who knows, your subscription may end up paying for itself instantly like mine did.

IF you want to play multiplayer online with the ps4 then yes you need PS+ otherwise it isn't required but has nice perks.

What a scam. Discounts pay for themselves...what a joke. Sure, if you were going to buy the games anyway, but if you're a sony gamer like that, you're already a slave to sony Most people are regular people who don't need all these games. They just want to play their couple of games online and they can't without paying subscription.

What a scam for you personally you mean? Those people that you described that want to try as many games as they can get an enormously good deal with PS+. No, its not for everyone, but that's kind of the nature of a subscription service - you judge whether its right for you. Not having access to any games online for not being subscribed is stupid though, I agree.

Also, wanting to play many games on a Sony console is being a slave to Sony? What's with the elitism? People play what they enjoy - wherever it happens to be.

For the record, PS+ costs $50-60 per year and Sony gave away over $1300 of free games in 2014. Scam, indeed.

Glad you agree, that's the point. I already know people who pay for subscription will usually try to justify it for themselves (see below).

Sony gave away nothing. There is no way to ascertain whether people will have paid for these games or not. It cost Sony nothing. Also, there's no way that's $1300. You mean a game costing $14 on Amazon that you regard as $60? And you get a limited license for it. That's delusional.

I know, saving money is such a joke. Look at Sony's latest sale. Hotline Miami for $3? Child of Light for $7.49? Bad, bad Sony:

Why are you so offended? I think it's a joke, and you like paying for online gaming and discounts. That's fine. No need to get all touchy.

Guess what? Art of Balance on SALE this week !!! For nothing!!! Mega Man 4,5,6 on sale this week!!! What a joke to give free stuff!!!

Nothing wrong of course. It's what I do too. But Many people don't. Also called the millions out there not hardcore gamers. They buy very few games you'd be surprised. Imagine all the people buying Wii U for Smash Bros. or Mario Kart 8 and then being forced to pay for online play. The only reason they bought the console was to play these games, and their whole point arguably is online. It is backwards to suggest that they should be convinced it is a "good deal" because they'll get more lucrative discounts when they weren't necessarily interested in these discounts in the first place.

Now if the deal was "subscribe - give us money every month - and we will provide you with exciting and surprising discounts" that's one thing. That's like Nintendo saying "Buy this console, get DDP" or "Fill surveys, get points", but here they are omitting important parts of your $60 dollars games' purchases to lure you into the deal. That's completely different. The deal may be worth it, but you don't have any choice in the matter. You gotta pay or "suffer consequences".

Well, I guess it was only a matter of time before Edie got to experience having a thread stunk up by a raving lunatic. Internet!

Also, yes, I literally paid $10 to get $20 off. It paid for itself twice over within 5 minutes of purchasing the subscription. If you claim that is a scam, then there is some faulty wiring in your head, simple as.
