@Artwark Ubisoft doesn't care if one version of a game does marginally better through being exclusive. They care about total sales. Chances are, Legends probably would not have had as good total sales if they were just on Wii U.
Also, Ubisoft doesn't care if other third party developers make games for Wii U. If anything, they don't want them to, since it gets rid of competition, making their games stand out more.

Third party games help flesh out a console's library so yes they absolutely matter. You could say Wii had the best exclusives last-gen (I actually prefer the games Sony publishes but it's all subjective and there's no doubt Nintendo is an awesome developer/publisher) but its library paled in comparison to the other consoles because it had barely any third party support worth speaking of.

I would not have gotten Wii U so soon had it not been for the Bayonetta 2 announcement tbh. Because it shown signs of Nintendo actively working with 3rd parties and despite the multi-console stuff's future, they've been very very willing to do everything to let certain devs make interesting exclusives or actually make sure a stupid company's awesome game ends up here (looking at you SE), which is all I'm asking for, for the most part.
If you want Nintendo to make money and not have the Wii U become a useless brick in your living room, yes. Nintendo's first party titles and indies games will only help them for so long. People need variety and third party games provided that. And as awesome as the majority of indie games coming to the Wii U look, not many people will know about them.
Does it matter?
Well Wii U isn't doing so hot without it.
Xbox games are like 99% third party and 1% first party.
Hasn't this same question been asked on this website like a million times before and it's usually asked by someone who wants to make third party games seem useless to justify the fact that Nintendo gets not third party support.

Surely having variety is a good thing a lot of the best games each gen are 3rd party as well.
Monster Hunter!!!

Third party games are massively important. For the gamer, they enrich and diversify a library (and even make up the bulk of it). Many of the best games ever made are by third party developers. For the platform holder licensing fees are a vital source of revenue.
Why would anyone not want third party games? The Wii U certainly wouldn't be worse off if it had received last years big hitters.

It can also end up being the worst games you owned. With technology increasing, devs and publishers are too lazy to make a fully finished game. Can you honestly compare the quality of a first-party game to a third-party game?
majority of third-party games either end up being mediocre or just plain awful. Now some like Wayforward or Ubisoft are really good and actually make great games, but SEGA, EA, Sanzaru etc all end up making games that are mediocre at best. Not only that but these devs just try to emulate game feel that people are so used to. FPS for example is a genre that to me is so easy to get bored to death because they all have the same thing in mind. Cinematics and game mechanics with little to no variety.
^All you're doing is rationalizing your own forced limitations as to what you play. There are tons of good third-party games out there, some of which outdo anything Nintendo's ever made. But you're too scared to go out and try them because you're afraid they might be bad, even though there are tons of ways to limit that risk, many of which don't involve spending a single cent.
@CanisWolfred is right, for every good Nintendo game there is at least one good third party game, the problem is that you have to do your work to clear the trash out of the way and find the good ones(not so much... just read a review, if it's glaring obvious shovelware stay away)

It's quite ignorant to claim that the majority of third-party games are "plain awful." Some of the best games on the 3DS are third-party:
Bit.Trip Saga
Bravely Default
Code of Princess
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Professor Layton
Project X Zone
Resident Evil: Revelations
Rune Factory 4
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
If you really believe that they'res no variety, you need to play more games. Not every game out there is a Call of Duty clone.
Bravely Default
Senran Kagura Burst
SteamWorld Dig
and the list keeps going
