I've been a Nintendo gamer all my life, heck, my username is Nintendoer, and have never owned another console (well, aside from a PC, but that's beside the point), but with the release of the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy on PS4 I might just buy one. However, with the Switch just releasing and me being a naïve Nintendo fanboy, I'm not sure what the best way to do that would be, or even if I should at all. I'm looking for a cost effective solution, so if anyone could give me advice, I'd really appreciate it.

My suggestion would be to try and find the cheapest standard PS4. With the Slim and Pro taking the spotlight away from launch models, I imagine they must be the cheapest to get a hold of these days.
There'll certainly be more and more deals popping up now on the classic models to clear stock for the Slim and Pro, actually been some pretty good bundles already in Europe at least. It depends what you're after really but I'd imagine it'd be worth waiting until Black Friday or Christmas.
@Nintendoer You can try places like Gamestop.or a local game store for used original PS4. Either that or Craigslist. That's probably the cheapest way you will find now. You can always wait for Black Friday as well I am sure there will be a sale on bundles then.

@Nintendoer@Operative2-0 has the best point. The big thing is there's not even an actual difference between the launch and the Slim, it's just smaller and cheaper to build (and yes, runs cooler and quieter due to the smaller die.)
Pro.....if you really value prettier graphics or more consistent frame rates might be worthwhile. But if you're not planning on a big PS4 library it's overkill. I have a launch model, I'm tempted by pro just to iron out framerates where it underperforms ( I don't have a 4k screen.), but otherwise no reason to dump the cash. I keep wanting it and then realize I don't use it...why would I spend more on it?!
Which is the other catch, if you have a Switch and are a die-hard Nintendo fan. Switch is getting, like, a lot of games in the coming months. My PS4 hasn't been booted since March 3. I have Horizon, Gravity Rush 2, Persona 5, I'll have Uncharted 4's expansion soon. I'll be buying Detroit and Spiderman. I have a bunch of 3rd party games a few years old. I'll be getting Assassin's Creed: Origins. All these games are/will remain in shrinkwrap. The deluge of Switch games....big Switch games...is coming right about when I'd have time for PS4. Conceivably the thing won't be booted until late 2018. Owning two (three....3DS still getting Metroid and just got Ever Oasis...I'm not even done DQ 7 & 8 yet!) platforms takes quite a time investment!
I'd recommend it if you're interested in some of the games...but be cautious before jumping in that you actually have time to PLAY said games. I like my PS4. I'm tempted to upgrade my PS4 to the Pro. Yet ultimately I don't actually USE my PS4...
I don't understand this toe-dipping business. It's a console. You buy games to play on it.
A couple suggestions, though, coming from a PS4 owner:
1) If you're not opposed to digital games, then look into getting a PS+ subscription. The big feature is that it allows for online multiplayer, of course, but more importantly, you get a few free games every month and deeper discounts during some PSN sales. And PSN sales happen frequently. Free subscription games and games you get on sale are a fantastic way to build up a collection early on.
Oh, and with PS+, you get access to cloud saves, too.
2) Kind of a related point, but unlike Nintendo and its games, Sony's games frequently go on sale, so you should probably wait for prices to drop before grabbing new games.
As for getting the console itself, as others have said, wait for Black Friday or something. The vanilla PS4 will probably get pretty cheap with all the new models out there.
If you want to track good deals online, I recommend glancing at https://www.cheapassgamer.com/ on occasion. It's a great website that posts new video game-related deals whenever they happen.
As for recommended games, I'd suggest:
Persona 5 (fantastic JRPG)
Ratchet and Clank (gorgeous 3D action-platformer)
Gravity Rush Remastered (adventure-action game with a focus on gameplay over narrative)
Tearaway Unfolded (creative platformer set in a paper world)
If you have Amazon Prime there might be a decent deal that pops up for the standard PS4 on July 11th for Prime Day. I got a PS4 about a year ago and I'd recommend it! There's plenty of good games for it especially if you're a fan of JRPGs.
@BLP_Software Did you legit just recommend Just Cause 3? Are you feeling ok? The new Snake Pass icon...just the icon....has more entertainment value for $20 than Just Cause 3 at any price
@BLP_Software Yowch. If that game were indicative of the best of the PS4, I'd have unplugged mine and put the WiiU back in its spot by now
It runs badly, it crashes at the end of the TUTORIAL mission without a several-gig patch. And after all that, after you've gone through a few towns you start to realize there's absolutely nothing else that's going to happen in this game beyond just zipping from spot to spot and blowing up the same 8 objects again and again. It was really really fun at first....and then quickly became a game consisting of only the worst parts of an Assassin's Creed game.
Infamous is a way better game in the genre, though Second Son on PS4 is kind of "eh"...the first two were much better. The BEST game of that genre that comes closest to JC3 is a prior gen game, from EA believe it or not, called The Saboteur. WWII occupied France with a cool B&W (occupied) and color (liberated) motif. Otherwise the play was very similar...but a lot better. EA, of course killed the studio and fired everyone the week after the game launched.....because it's EA.
Of everything in my PS4 collection, shrink wrapped or otherwise, I think I'd rate JC3, very slightly, above Assassin's Creed Unity.
