The AV Club has typically awful video game reviews, but it still helps me keep abreast of what's come out. This one seemed pretty interesting...even the negative comments that readers posted made me think I might like the game.
So far, it's very funny. I've only played for about an hour, but I'm enjoying it. The quality of humor really does hearken back to classic Monkey Island (this is another Ron Gilbert game, which I probably should have mentioned before I made that comparison)...even if it is far, far less subtle this time around.
I don't normally play this kind of game (what is it? real-time RPG? no idea...) so I can't tell you how much you'll enjoy it if you're a fan of similar games, but the self-awareness goes a long way toward giving it an identity I really enjoy.
The whole game is very funny. The dialogue is better than the game itself. I literally play through the game and do quests to hear his voice. He says something to different everybody like "you wise cow" or like "you wicked witch" (I don't know their horrible examples off the top of my head). The things that come out of his mouth are what gaming humor ought to be. And Sparkles well...
To be honest, the gameplay gets pretty repetitive toward the end, but the game didn't ask me to play much longer after that happened, which was good.
But the fact is that this is a game more about the writing/performance than about unique, evolving gameplay. If you're looking for something that'll keep your fingers engaged in interesting, unpredictable things as you play...this will disappoint you. But if you're looking for a hilariously great time, I can't think of much better.
