Half-Life 2 was awful in general, but the godawful boat section was what really killed the game for me.

It was frustrating, but I thought it was a pretty cool section. Certainly better than Ravenholm.

this is basically objectively false

I know you're joking when you say an opinion is "objectively false", but in recent years, when HL2 no longer has it's visuals and physics engine to lean back on, a lot of people have begun to question it being a good game. Especially since Doom 2016 came out, which took FPS gameplay to a new level.

The core problem with HL2 is just that it lacks the type of decision making and dexterity that Doom had. Very rarely can you evade enemy attacks, and very rarely do you make decisions on where to go, or what enemy to take on first.

Most good games train you throughout the experience, and by the end you have enough skill to beat a challenge you couldn't have beaten before. In HL2 you go from set piece to set piece and spraying down enemies exactly how the game designer wanted you to do it. Even Halo, which came 3 years before, gave the player a lot of freedom to tackle a fight anyway they see fit. Modern games, like MGS5 basically just set up the rules, then let the player go on in any way imaginable.

In HL2 you go around a corner and a zombie appears, that same zombie always appears around that corner. You have to go around that corner, because the game won't let you do anything else, so what you end up with is essentially a rail shooter, but with manual moving.
