Which is funny, since they're conservative in plenty of other areas.

Oh don't get me wrong, Japan is a very conservative society (well, right up until this generation's teenagers. They're a very different culture that's coming through). The openess about sex is not about it being a progressive nation as it is in parts of Europe. The openess about sex is a simple byproduct of the Japanese culture not being subjected to the same sexual repression of Europe and the US under the church.

When it's never really been a cultural taboo, why would it be now?

I saw this documentary I think it was called Vanguard it talks about different places around the world and issues they face. Apperantly Japan is having problems with getting people to reproduce, apparently people in Japan are having less children and things keep getting worse. Apparently people are more worried about working and about their financial future and they don't have the time or energy to worry about such things. The documentary showed what a Host Club was and other things, apparently Japan is working on robots that can help make people's lives easier so they have more time and energy to work on reproducing. What I wonder is, if games like these and well other pervert anime stuff are sort of used in a way to help people in Japan be more enticed to reproduce. Of course that's just one of those stupid things I tend to wonder.

Dear Waltz,

The Western world is not Japan. We were raised differently, our cultural values are different, we dress differently, we decorate our homes differently, and above all, we think differently. Therefore, when considering any products from Japan (or any other country that's not our own, really), we naturally view them through the eyes our parents and society have given us and with the minds we've been forced to cultivate in the soil on which we stand — not that of a tiny archipelago halfway around the world from us. We're all sorry beyond words that we were not born in Japan so that all of us could claim the birthright of having our butts kissed by you for our clear moral superiority. Please forgive us our sins of "not giving a crap about what Japan thinks" and "judging whether or not we'd like to play a game based on our personal tastes and opinions" as we find ourselves somehow unable to do anything but.

@mamp Have you ever stopped to think maybe games like this is why they have a low birth rate in Japan? Those gamers already have their hands full.

Not trying to be rude I just thought it sounded funny. XD So are you telling me these guys would much rather have a baby on a PSP than in real life (LOL). Also If they can handle dating 5 or more girls in a videogame they somehow can't handle dating one girl in real life (LMAO) you think they'd have experience.
Also I heard one of those girls in the game is the main character's cousin I was like O_O but then again I was like meh it's Japan.

In my country it is usual to see some married cousins and i do not live in Japan. I don't see the big deal of this game. So do you think I prefer to play virtual football just because i play fifa? Actually, this game is not weird, or at least it's not weird enough.

Find the bit where I said you had to enjoy these games? It'll be challenging because I didn't.

My complaint is with the derision directed at these games. It's not just a case of "not my kind of game." It's not even a case of "this game sucks". No, if a game is too Japanese with the toon sex people instead switch to "oh lol what a perverted game only sick people would play this." You might think mockery is a perfectly fair response to something that you don't like or are not interested in, but I sure as hell don't. I don't like Call of Duty. I don't play Call of Duty. I certainly don't think it's appropriate for me to start calling Viewtiful Joe a psychotic killer because he does enjoy Call of Duty. In fact I would imagine if I did that often enough it would consitute "harassment."

And when that mockery extends to become a boaderline criticism of an entire culture, as it does at times in these discussions on these threads, it starts to veer dangerously close to racism.

And if nothing else, it is still enormously hypocritical to criticise the quality of a game based on its sexual (perceieved or real) content when western culture buys into violence all the time.

An Unenlightened, Violence-loving, Prudish Philistine of the West (I'm not sure when I suddenly became Japanese, so I thought it appropriate I point out that I'm in the same boat as everyone else here).

Actually, this game is not weird, or at least it's not weird enough.

That goes without saying. It's getting translated into English, which by default meants it's nowhere near as weird as the games that stay in Japan

@kinioka not trying to insult anyone's culture I was like O_O at first because well in my culture it's kinda weird and it stunned me for a quick moment, but then I realized it could be a normal thing over there which is why I said meh it's Japan so meh no big deal I'm not really bothered by it, I'm no one to judge. The only weird thing about this game is that the babies look like Reborn babies except I saw one baby with some pretty big boobies which I have not seen in Reborn.

@Waltz: find the bit where i said anything about people being required to enjoy these games? It'll be challenging because I didn't. also, i'm pretty sure being a person who enjoys games about getting with chicks and hand-rearing your own army doesn't really count as a protected class anywhere in the world. wake me up when someone starts personally insulting you due to your preference for this game, but generalizations about this being strange or weird are no worse than generalizations about Call of Duty being lame and crappy. in the end, fans still wind up annoyed, and non-fans still don't care. ignore the criticism if it bothers you, i promise we'll do the same for your proselytizing.

That's exactly what I'm telling you. Remember back when that Japanese dude married his 3DS?

@Gamesake Wait there was a guy that married his 3DS O_O how does conception work that way? (LOL crappy pun intended) Did he fall in love with a specific game, videogame character, or just the 3DS itself? Not gonna lie I've been eyeing my 3DS too. (J/K)
