I think the only RPG's I play on PC at all are RPG Maker games (yes, mostly THOSE ones, but only if they're actually fun). Problem is that most RPG's on PC share that gritty, dark age setting, and I passionately hate them all.

1) Don't have a definite favourite.

2) JRPGs, although there's so few of them which are good. The next one I prefer are isometric RPG's and roguelikes. I can't get into the open world games like Skyrim because I always lose track of where I'm going, and I can't get into MMO's because I just play them as if they were single player games. If I had some friends to make a raiding party maybe that would change, but usually I don't seek out guilds for myself.

3) Hm, the last one I played was probably the PC port of FFVII. Not sure if that counts. The last real one I played was Titan Quest. It was just a great casual experience, with a fantastic feedback loop that just makes you want to push deeper and deeper into the game.

4) The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Yeah I know it's already out, I'm waiting for a price drop ==;

5) Ys Origin. Came out in the west 2 years ago on Steam but I think it's actually a 7-8 year old game? Heavier on the action than the RPG, but it's one of the most satisfying games you'll ever play.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

So no tutorial? No grand exposition? No forcing you through a lame town and a bunch of cutscenes before you can even do anything? Because those were the major problems with Baldur's Gate. If it thrusts you into the game, that's actually what I want.

Nope, none at all, definitely not.
I misunderstood what you were saying about BG. You should definitely try ID then.

3) What was the last CRPG you played? When was it? Did you like it? Why or why not?
Skyrim, it was fun, but the main quest is terrible and terribly short, but there is enough to see and do besides that.

4) What CRPGs that are coming out that you're anticipating?
Torment: Tides of Numenera looks great. But I'm not that keen of distant isometric views in RPG's.

Divinity: Original Sin is defnitely on my list to play someday. It just sounds so cool.

But lately I've been playing Final Fantasy 14. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I play MMOs to get absorbed in the world, and the beginning in Limsa Lominsa really has a lot of charm to it. The areas aren't super explorable, but taking on the quests feels more like a guided tour than just busy-work. The dialogue here can be hard to read, but after playing DQ8, I've kinda come to like seeing accents expressed in text. Most of the side characters have quite a bit of personality, so I kinda like doing things for them just to keep them talking. I'm an Arcanist, so I got a pet, which makes soloing easier. Not too easy, though. I've already died twice, and once was when I got ambushed by a dozen pirates near my level during a quest. I don't even know what happened the other time, though.

I will say that I kinda miss just wandering around and seeing what I could find, which I could still be doing, but I'm in a hurry to get to level 15, and you get soooo much more experience by doing quests. Also, Hunts being automatic stuff is the best thing ever. Fates (random optional quests usually involving hoards of monsters that anyone can activate and join) are really neat, too.

I also kinda miss the skill-leveling system of FFXI where you could upgrade your base stats simply by doing stuff. Ain't nothing like increasing your running speed simply by running around!

Got to level 15 in FF14 already. I actually only needed to get to level 14 to change classes, but I wanted to do the lvl. 15 Guild Quest (which I still have to do, I'm breaking for lunch). The Fates are getting much more annoying since they're often in places I need to do quests in, at least in Western La Noscea (or however you spell it...). Granted some of them are optional GuildLeves, but still, nothing like trying to find a Dodo you're supposed to pascify without killing only to activate a Fate that spawns an endless supply of blood-thirsty dodos...

Anyways, once I do the Guild Quest, I'll be able to go to other towns. That should be fun.

So after playing Theatrhythm for a week now I really really want to try FF14. How time intensive is it? If it's too much I might wait until November when my uni break starts to get some hours in.

Not sure if you read it yesterday because of the outage, but I wrote a very long post yesterday explaining that it is sort of time intensive. If you don't have an hour or so a day to devote to it, you might not get your money's worth. The game doesn't really open up until you do the Level 15 story quest, though the main way to level up is to do the various type of quests out there. Most of the quests aren't time-intensive, though, so you're free to take your time.

I missed the post D:

anyway, I'll probably muster an hour but I was just wondering how intensive the raids were. Would my party members want me on for 5+ hours at a time with no breaks? And would I need to pay so much attention that I wouldn't be able to listen to a lecture at the same time? That being said whenever I think about MMO's and getting my money's worth, I usually resolve to just get a single player RPG instead. I think I mentioned before on this thread, I'm terribly antisocial in MMORPG's haha

The thing is...I haven't been playing with other people this whole game. The only quests I've seen so far that require other people are Hunts and a specific type of Guild quest I recently unlocked...otherwise, this game is pretty fun to solo, so long as you stick to the quests and don't just run out and kill things.

As for raids, those require joining a "Free company". Despite getting a bazillion invites, I have not done so yet, so I can't really say much more...

Icewind Dale.

I have NO idea as to why I liked this game so much more than Baldur's Gate, Planescape, etc. I just did. Maybe the prospect of questing all around the place that I knew so well from the books was way more enticing than the others? No clue. But it was awesome, and I'll always have fond memories of it.
