Just thought I'd make a thread for RPGs people play on the computer. Please note that they don't need to be western-made games, nor do they need to be computer-exclusive. If it has a version on any computer, feel free to talk about it. That includes weird one-off PCs they used to have before windows became such a big thing, like the MSX or the Amiga. Also now's as good a time as any to mention that the games can be from any time period, including the future. You got some news for an upcoming game? Feel free to tell us about it. You been playing some early-access MMO? Feel free to tell us about it.

ROMs don't count, though, sorry. Just because the rules say you can talk about the fact that you played Super Mario Bros. 3 on your browser doesn't mean this thread is the place to post it.

Also, MOBAs don't count, either. Unless somebody can give me a good reason to change this.

Other than that, everything else that is an RPG that you can play on a computer is fair game.

As always, I'll start with a few questions:

1) What is your favorite Computer RPG? Why do you like it so much?

2) What is your favorite style of CRPG? (such as MMO, lootfests, rogue-likes, Action/RPG, dungeon crawlers, JRPG-style, etc?)

3) What was the last CRPG you played? When was it? Did you like it? Why or why not?

4) What CRPGs that are coming out that you're anticipating?

5) You got any old CRPGs you'd like to recommend?

(No need to answer all of them, btw)

(Question 1) Dungeons of Dredmor THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!!! Great sense of humor, Brilliant design, great aesthetic and amazing combat!
(Question 2) I've only played a few CRPGs but of them all, I gotta go with roguelikes.
(Question 3) Ditto the first answer
(Question 4) I've been really looking foward to this game called "Crawl'' on steam. Technically it's out on early access but i want to see what's in store.
(Question 5) I'm very new to CRPGs so i don't know that many

I'll start by answering my own questions:

My favorite CRPG is Fallout 3 still. I really liked roaming its fast wastelands. It had a cheeky sense of humor and some great atmosphere, good pacing, and lot of places to go and things to do. The world felt more alive than New Vegas, too.

I don't think I have a favorite style, but I find with on the computer I like something that's quick to start but still engrossing. I won't put up with long intro like I do with console games. I guess it's because I don't have a comfy bed or couch to relax on.

Last one I played was Legends of Grimrock two weeks ago. It was pretty great, though I'm only 1/3 of the way through. I should go back to it soonish.

I'm looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077, Wastelands 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Torment: Tides of Numera. The first one I don't know much about, but I like a lot of Sci-fi/cyberpunk stuff, so I'm hoping it's good. The other 3 all look like great old-school-meets-new-school kinda games.

@MrMario02 - I've never knew much about Dungeons of Dredmore, but now I see it's a rogue-like. I've never been big on rogue-likes, but I do like the sound of a humorous entry in the genre. I see it's cheap, too. I might have a little left over if I get Wastelands 2 with Steam cards tomorrow. Might pick it up if I do.

EDIT:

@GuardianKing - What about Guild Wars 2?

Great thread idea. So I guess I will start by answering the questions

1. World of Warcraft. I just love the fact that it's its own living breathing world so to speak. It still amazes me when I go into the main city and see hundreds of other characters running around knowing that each one is an actual person instead of an NPC. I really enjoy the lore as well as it is some of the best I have ever know video game wise.

2. MMO. All the other RPG type I for some reason just prefer on a home console. I the only time I have played an RPG on a pc other then an MMO that I can remember is Knights of the Old Republic but that was because I dont have an Xbox.

3. World of Warcraft. Yep I enjoy it at least I hope so to keep playing it for 5 years.

4. World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor

5. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic but then again I dont know many who haven't played this game.

As I said not a big CRPG player except for MMOs. Before MMOs really was into the Heroes of Might and Magic series and city builder sims but thats another topic. I got into MMOs about 10 years ago with Dungeon and Dragons Online and just fell in love with the genre. At that time the only place you could play an MMO it seemed was PC so I think that's why I only play MMOs on PC cause all the others I can get on the consoles.

World of Warcraft... especially when played as a real RPG with other people.

1) anything by bethesda. they are buggy as all heck but I can lose months of my life playing them. Wonderful mods make the games last forever.
2) I like to loot dungeons and explore. For some odd reason I don't like jrpgs on my PC even though its hooked to the same tv as my consoles.
3) still working on Skryim (but that is normal I keep playing whichever bethesda game is out until the next one drops) but I'm playing Risen 3 right now as well.
4) I'll get back to that.
5) I'll get back to that.

1) Planescape: Torment. Solid even though very classic gameplay. Awesome atmosphere, style, characters, scenario and overall writing. Unforgettable experience.

2) Classic Western RPG I guess.

3) Still playing Divinity: Original Sin. I like it a lot, it really is a Icewind Dale 2014. The inventory is very poopydoodoocacapoipledoopley though and the writing is subpar.

4) The oldschool Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity and obviously Torment. The new Witcher 3 and Dragon Age 3.

5) Everyone should at least try one Infinity Engine style old CRPG (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale or Planescape). Any Bioware game is also a good pick (especially Star Wars KotOR).

I really like to put many hours in a solo RPG experience but I am not a huge fan of MMOs. As a whole I only enjoy the leveling when it is well done but I really don't like vertical gameplays in multiplayer .

I loved Planescape: Torment when I played it year ago. I've been meaning to go back to it recently. Maybe once I'm done with DQ8 and Shining Force.

I never played Icewind Dale. How's the pacing? The lack of immediacy kinda ruined Baldur's Gate for me. It took 5 hours for me to get through the tutorial, and that was after spending an hour creating my character...

Don't play Icewind Dale then . It takes the core experience of Baldur's Gate but with no grand story and no companions. You create your entire lineup at the beginning (if you had problems with 1, imagine creating 6 characters from the ground up) then you just explore, fight and get involved in little story arcs. It's a much more intimate series than the Baldur's Gate saga.

Ultima VII - The Black Gate is the best (EA forced the expansions to be rushed but they are still good.)

Most of the little things seen as innovation in modern ones were already in that all that time ago.

Dark Souls, since it offers perfect gameplay, amazing lore and near endless replay value.
I generally prefer Strategy RPGs, though I like all kinds of RPGs.
The last RPG I played was Dark Souls 2 and it was quite the let-down tbh. It's not even close to the greatness of Dark Souls 1.
My most anticipated RPG is Witcher 3, since Witcher 2 is one of my favourite RPGs of all time.
Can't really recommend any old CRPG since I got into PC gaming really late, I started on Nintendo consoles and was introduced to PC gaming with Counter Strike by friends, when I was about 14-15 years old.

I have to admit though, that I prefer to play RPGs on the console. I'm terrible with hotkeys since I'm not able to reach the keys 5 - 0 properly. That's part of the reason why I found more enjoyment in playing Final Fantasy 14 on the PS3 as opposed to the PC. I always prefer playing with a controller unless I'm playing a FPS.

So no tutorial? No grand exposition? No forcing you through a lame town and a bunch of cutscenes before you can even do anything? Because those were the major problems with Baldur's Gate. If it thrusts you into the game, that's actually what I want.

Would anyone recommend Bastion? It's on sale on steam and I'm thinking about getting it.

I once owned Bloodwych on the ZX Spectrum, and tried to play it aged about 8. Utterly confused and turned me off RPGs for many a year...

Also, you can't call the Amiga a "weird, one-off PC"!

If it counts, I've been playing a lot of Rogue Legacy lately. It's just so addicting because you always feel like you're making progress, even when you die frequently.
