Some of you may remember back when Red Alert 3 was released, as a promotional deal EA offered us the original Red Alert game for free. Now they've gone one better and with the upcoming release of Command & Conquer 4, they are offering free downloads for the original C&C game (Tiberian Dawn) as well the sequel Tiberian Sun and it's expansion Firestorm and like before, Red Alert. Anyone downloading these? I certainly will

Nah. I played the crap out out of them back in the day. Sweet deal, though.

Wow, that takes me back. We had some awesome fun playing C&C back in the day, 3 pc's over LAN, it was awesome. We couldn't see each other's forces, but we could hear each others threats and cries of war ringing around the house. Looking back it was like some retro version of today's multiplayer games, difference is you could physically sneak into the other room to try and create a pact, only to find the other person had beat you to it and they were already in cahoots. Much betrayal and hilarity.

Thanks Terra, this'll be a nice trip down memory lane, downloading now!

Got all 3 of them, and they've been awesome so far! Not a bad game in the bunch. I still like C&C3 the most, but these games are much easier to into.

Hah, unless your computer was made during the Clinton Administration, I doubt you'd have any problem. Just remember, all you have to do unzip the .rar file, keep going into files until you can find the GAME.exe, right-click it, go to "properties", click the combatibilty tab, then set the combatibility to Windows 98, and you'll be all set.

Well I made it past the first two missions pretty well, do you guys have some tips or hints to share for later levels?

Congratz. I gotta warn you, it gets harder after that. The next mission should be a choice of either the "Capture the Train" mission, or "secure the crash site" mission. The Train Mission is optional, and when I did it, in the next mission I got to see a clip of my newly captured train destroyed. Although I assume it would've been an enemy train carrying troops had I not done it. If you want, I can give you some hints on those missions, since that's as far as I got.

Well... I started the Train Mission before I read this post

Luckily I quit before I made any progress, so if it is a difficult level, I wouldn't mind some tips

The C&C games are a bit too complicated for me. I'll just stick to Darwinia for the time being.

Thanks given to Xkhaoz for that one avatar.

Yeah, it's great news they are awesome games. Just a pity C&C 4 isn't anything special going from initial impressions of the BETA.

Which ones have you played? The older ones are much less complicated than the newer ones, and they all come with tutorials, if I recall correctly. If not, I can give you some basic tips. The campaign missions should teach you the rest.

@Giggsy

From what you've played from the beta, or what you've heard about the Beta?

The Train mission isn't that bad if you do it right, but it's pretty easy to waste your time if you do it wrong, and then you'll get a terrible score.

Okay, at the start, you're gonna want to go north west, keeping to the rock face. You'll come to a Nod structure and a civilian array, guarded by Nod troops. Take out the troops, then take out the "Light house". Do NOT destroy the civilian array. Make sure one of your engineers captures it. That'll allow for reinforcements to get sent in. Now, there's another civilian array visible just a littles ways south of the first array, on a rock cliff. To reach it, continue north until you can see a bridge on your lefthand side, go under the bridge, then proceed south. You'll probably be attacked by enemy troops and/or vehicles, so be ready and make sure your engineers and medic aren't too close to the front. Proceed until you can find the source of the bridge, then go east towards the array. It's guarded by some Nod Heavy Troopers(whatever they're called), and there'll be some troops and possibly even an enemy vehicle coming your way. Make sure you have some troops on standby to take care of the infantry while most of your force is taking care of the Heavy Troopers. After you take care of the enemy forces, capture the civilian array and you'll recieve more reinforcements.

Afterwards, split into two groups, sending one group across the bridge, while sending the other group north on the ground towards the Train station. Make sure most or all of your engineers are with the latter group. The group on the brigde should only encouter some light resistance. Just make sure you take care of every enemy they come across, then focus on desroying the Light houses. If you come across a broken bridge, send an engineer to fix it. Once you cross the second bridge, your very first priority should be to take out the engineer and/or his vehicle(a pick-up truck), since he'll try to use it to bomb the bridge to the north. If you cannot take him out in time, don't bother wasting an engineer trying to fix it, because all that's across it are some enemy troops and some civilians. You can still complete the mission regardless, but it will hurt your score in the end.

As for the group on the ground, make sure they keep going north until they come to a bridge. Please not they they will be attacked by an enemy vehicle on the way, but it usually retreats before causing much harm. When you get to the bridge, do not cross it. Go west, and you'll encounter a beacon, which will cause some Titans to be brought in for you to take out the enemy Power Plants. Now I have to warn you: Titans are retarded. Make sure you manage each of them individually, and keep them as close as possible to edge of the water. After you destroy the Power Plants, hold your position. The enemy will send troops across the bridge, and you might end up destroying the bridge if you fight too close to, or on it.

After that, it should be a cakewalk. Just send some troops across and take out the enemy gate and lighthouses, then take out any troops to that you encouter, and have your engineers capture the rest of the enemy structures, making sure your last available engineer is the one who captures the train station, located at the northwestern edge of the map, above the enemy radar array. If you want to, you can also sell all of your enemy's structures for some extra cash.

Oh, and make sure both groups are acting simultaniously, otherwise you'll just waste time. Also, please note that this is not the only way to complete the mission, this is just the way that I found worked the best.

This guide was made for the Train Mission on Normal. If you're playing on an easier difficulty, chances are the scenario will be a tad different.
