i agree sonic isn't really a 3D game. The speed of the 2D doesn't go over well in 3D. These are want i want Sega to do.(as a company not just for sonic) Sonic 2D al la shadow complex or Mega Man 9 Sonic Adventure 3 Sonic RPG 2 A new Alex Kid game Billy Hatcher 2

I wasn't aware they had made a Sonic game after Sonic & Knuckles. Maybe I just haven't been keeping up.
But at that point the Sonic series was only 1 for 4 as far as great games go.
Adventure 1 & 2 deserve more credit than they get, but alas they're 3D and unfairly get lumped in with the poor 3D follow-ups. Adventure 2 is the best Sonic game there is though.
So.......when are they gonna stop making spin offs?
That depends on what you consider 3D Sonic to be. I usually go by the Adventure-type titles that star Sonic The Hedgehog as the main character as the basis of Sonic Cannon, with an exception for Sonic Unleashed (or, at least, the daytime levels).

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is not a good racer. It just isn't. And The Black Knight looks terrible to me, and was almost universally panned by critics.
The 2D ones that apeared on the GBA and DS over the past decade may not be the games that took the series in new directions but they were certainly good, something you can't say about the 3D ones.
Can I just mention the ENORMOUS elephant in the room here? Everyone talks about 'old' Sonic being awesome, and 'new' Sonic being crap. Let's just take an ultra-pessimistic stance for a moment. Sonic 1, 2, 3, S&K and CD are the old good Sonic games; whilst Sonic Advance 1, 2, 3 and Rush 1 & 2 are the new good Sonic games. Everything else I'll, for the time being, write off as utter bile. Sheer wastes of time and energy. Play any at your peril. Etc. See, back then there was this system called a Game Gear. You might have heard of it [snark]. There was a lot of Sonic games on there. And, taking my pessimistic viewpoint, THEY ALL SUCK. Hell, you don't even have to be pessimistic about it for at least around 70% of his Game Gear outings to be regarded as really quite awful games. Sonic Drift (and Drift 2)? Sonic Labyrinth? Sonic Triple Trouble? Sonic Blast? Dear god that's the ugliest game I've ever encountered. Tails Sky Patrol? Tails Adventures? Any of these ringing any bells? Moving away from Game Gear, Sonic R's ugly head looms into view whilst Sonic Fighters tries its best to be invisible. I could go on.
So 5 games out of an absolute shedload back then are fondly remembered as really good games. Funny how we conveniently forget about the rest of them. And what about today? Oh, look. 5 games out of an absolute shedload are fondly regarded as good games. That seems pretty equal to me. So how does that spell that the 'hog has died? The only difference I can tell is that the old good Sonic games were console titles whilst the new good Sonic games are handheld titles. And since we all seem to forget about the old handheld whilst we fondly view the past with our rose-tinted spectacles, perhaps we might just be doing the same thing in reverse now.

If you think I was not going to comment in here, you are wrong guys. Sonic 06 was a pile of crap, the game was a mess in EVERYTHING. It is one of the worst games of ALL TIME. The graphics were screwed up, the gameplay is horrible, and the story was pure EVIL!! Sonic Adventure 1 was ok, Sonic Adventure 2 was awesome and the only 3D Sonic game I love. Sonic Heroes was ok, but repititive. Shadow the Hedgehog was somewhat enjoyable. Sonic Unleashed was somewhat better. I love all the 2D Sonic games, with the exception of Sonic Rush Adventure. If Project Needlemouse fails to deleiver the Sonic goodness I have been waiting for since the Sega Genesis days were over, then Sonic WILL BE DEAD. Sonic is half-dead already.
Two words that are going to revive Sonic: Project Needlemouse
Several words that will save Sonic:
Take him out of 3D!
Balloons, I don't want to see sonic devolve 18 year just because some people don't like his new games, If you don't like his new games stop flowering whining on the internet and play a diffrent game, the internet is so biased these days, they act like they speak for everyone, im tired of the old school fans who want every single fantastic game 2D, oh and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my favorite game so fairy off. too many bleeped curses gets them all edited out... chill, plz -- TBD
Well isn't that what everyone else is doing? Heres what I say, If you like a game buy it if you don't, a moderator will edit my comment to remove the suggestion i'm about to make. knock it off, man. -- TBD

The main Game Gear sonic games (Sonic 1, 2, Chaos and Triple Trouble) are pretty good. They're simpler but still lots of fun, are colorful (great graphics for the time on a portable), and control well. I'd totally get them for the DSi in a heartbeat were they rereleased. I'm considering getting the equivalent Master System versions for the Wii, since I'm not sure if a DSi VC will ever happen. If you really like 2-D Sonic games, I'd wholeheartedly recommend them, with the knowledge that they are portable games that were, in effect, a generation behind the Genesis games.
I like Sonic Rush a lot too; it makes me want to play the GBA games. The Adventure titles were also good, imo (though Tails in SA2 needed to fly like in SA1 and not be the same as Eggman). Sonic and the Secret Rings was fun too (except for going back to the menu screen all the time). The rest, meh. I'd love to see a 16 bit style WW Sonic though.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
I actually liked the noughties sonic games more than the ninties sonic games. Just my opinion but I reckon Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Advance 1,2 & 3, Sonic Rush and Sonic Heroes are better than the originals. Please do not rip off my face as I need it to play games.
