pikmin 3 is pretty mind-blowing, coming from one who's never played pikmin.

I don't see why not. If it's a great game it doesn't matter what time period it came from or console it was on.

Pokémon Platinum is my favorite game of all time and it holds an incredibly special place in my heart. I've played some really great games but none of them have came close to Pokémon Platinum.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

To me, I don't think so. What made games fun for me was how much I was impressed, and of course how fun they were. Like Super Metroid. That game was so fun and cool because it had things other games didn't, like all of those cool effects and the atmosphere. It made me feel like I was in a movie. Now there are many games that have that effect, so it's not as special anymore. There is just not many things games could do (other than better graphics) that hasn't been done. I don't think I'll ever be as impressed with games as when I was playing SNES and N64 games. So my answer then, would be no.

^That's kind of a sad outlook. Personally, I treat every game like its in a vacuum, and if the game is great on its own merit, then its a great game. I see no reason to treat a game as being special just because it does some things that others didn't at the time. Such games do not stand up to the test of time. Take Dragon Warrior NES or Phantasy Star II for example. Both were innovative games that did things that no other games did, yet that didn't stop them from being awful games, especially by modern standards (though I'd argue they were never good in the first place).

I don't think it should be about how impressive they are. You're never going to be as impressed as when you were a child, because now you're more experienced, whereas when you were a kid, everything seemed new and exciting. That's why they call it "an impressionable age". If you're always gonna hold onto such standards, it'll be much more difficult be able to appreciate the things you experience as an adult. And isn't a large part of growing up letting go of childish things? After all, you're no longer the person you once were, so wouldn't it be better to look at things through your new eyes and appreciate them for what they are, in a way you couldn't as a child?

Perhaps I'm overthinking things again, but it sounds more like you're holding yourself back from enjoying new games as much as you could with such logic, when you could just as easily enjoy something for what it is and how it excecutes such ideas.

Well... Yes, they can. New Super Mario Bros. is a game I enjoyed and loved every second when I played it. I thought it was so interesting and new after playing a lot of other games.
Super Mario Galaxy and 2 are good games as well.

God first.

It is impossible for modern games to ever become anyone's favorite. Obviously, the best of gaming is behind us.

Yeah, I guess it's a bit sad. I'm not saying I don't like newer games. I'm very much into MH3U on Wii U, and FE:A (yes, still) on 3DS. And I didn't like games solely by how impressive they were. Closer to what I meant is how special they were. Games I played then made me feel I couldn't get fun like this on any other game, and I think games aren't quite like that now. Not that there aren't exceptions now and then, I just don't think any modern game will quite reach "favorite game" status. I may be wrong though. The third Professor Layton game came close, so maybe all hope is not lost.
But you're right, I probably am holding myself back. But at least this way, I might be really impressed and surprised if Nintendo releases a new must have smash hit game (somewhat like ocarina of time). They seem to be good at doing that.

I don't know exactly where they'd fall in my "favorite of all time" list, but I've played lots of games this last generation that will live on in my mind for a LOOONG time.

  • Portal: Still Alive
  • Dead or Alive 4
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Metroid Fusion
  • Super Metroid
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Fire Emblem Awakening
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Of course, some of these games are older than others, but they're all alike in the sense that I played them all for the very first time within the past 5 years, and all of them were very memorable experiences.

I guess the lesson would be, that there are always great games.

Since it was released, Chrono Trigger has been my all-time favorite RPG....

....until Xenoblade Chronicles! D:

Modern games CAN become favorite_game_status!!!!

Joetherocker

Definitely. I mean, I'm 18 so I might not have the same perspective on this as some older gamers, but my list of all time favorites ranges from the first Castlevania up to Fire Emblem Awakening. The age of the game doesn't matter to me, as long as it's good.

Many modern games are among my favourites, but so are many old games. I don't really care what era a game is from because if it's good, it's good. There are aspects of modern gaming I wish didn't exist, but many things about it are better. These might be aspects of the design, or even just things that have improved over time such as controls or camera.

I'd like to say it's snobbery, but I think for a lot of people it's simply that gaming had more of an emotional impact on them when they were children. Some may like the "idea" of a game more than the game itself. Modern games played as adults perhaps don't cause the same emotional response and so can't compare.

Yes, of course they can. A lot of the time nostalgia is what holds a lot of older titles on the lists anyway. cough Ocarina of Time cough
Fire Emblem: Awakening is definitely in my Top 10, if not Top 5, and I only played that last year.

Yep, in terms of old games that had impact when I 1st played them and not so great now like Goldeneye as the graphics can be really off putting from the N64/PS bland textures & blocky models days and I'm finding great moden games that make go "oooh" just as much as Yoshi's Island or Jet Set Radio which are still playable like Batman Arkham City or Fire Emblem Awakening.

Metacritic has it at 99/100, the highest rated game of all time, and those reviews came out at the same time as the game. Certainly you don't believe that nostalgia was compelling critics to say it was the finest video game ever produced within weeks of its release.

Nostalgia has absolutely nothing to do with how well-regarded OoT is. It was considered a perfect game in 1998 and it holds up extremely well even by today's standards. The 3DS port didn't change much of anything other than update some facial textures.

OoT has influenced pretty much every 3D action/adventure game since for a reason. Even Aonuma has kept core gameplay of 3D Zelda titles relatively unchanged since OoT. That reason is not cherished childhood memories.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Yes.
Fire Emblem: Awakening is my favourite game of all time and that came out in 2012 in Japan.

Red Dead Redemption was one of my favourite games of the last 10-15 years, but I don't know if I would ever go back and replay it again in the future, like I find myself doing occasionally with stuff like SMW, Goldeneye, Mario Golf 64, and Contra 3.

Well said! Sick of people disrespecting Ocarina of Time cause it's the hip thing to do. By today's standards it isn't perfect - though it still holds up remarkably well - but back in 1998... Well we hadn't seen anything like it and we never will see another revolutionary game like it. It was perfection, pure and simple. The greatest game of all time.

This is one of the greatest posts ever posted. I have tried to complete that game 3, 4, or perhaps even 5 times. Every time I get so bored that I have to quit halfway through.
