Topic: Can Modern games reach favorite games of all time?

I've been playing games like 3d Land and Dream team and while those games are great and all, they don't make me feel like its my favorite game of all time but my favorite game for the system instead. Anyone has faced this issue?

Right now I'm playing link between worlds and I got a question to ask. Does the game get any better during progress or does it get worse(Don't spoil anything related to the game here like sections and all!)?

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I felt as if ALBW only got better and better all the time. Absolutely love it.

I don't see any problem in it, if a game is one of your favorites it is. no matter if it's old or new, good or bad if you feel it's your favorite of all time then it is.

Of course it is possible - 3D World is my favorite and is number 1 with SMB3.

It only depends on developers - nowadays it looks hard, because only thing they are thinking are DLCs and milking and not actual game.

I've noticed that games especially Nin games need just a little bit of time to age before we can fully appreciate them. The reason for this I think is that upon release a person is still aboard the hype train and they also have certain expectations. Once the game has been played and is no longer the newest release, the brain can recal the experience without the new game hype/expectations and may then appreciate the game for what it was and what was intended by the makers.

Nostalgia does tend to cast everything is lovely, rosy glow - but I do have plenty of "modern" games that I love way more than older ones. Dragon Age, for example, is perhaps my absolute favorite game ever. It was like a 40-hour DnD session come to life with so much to do and so much polish and choice - absolutely loved it.

Yes. 3 of my top 10 favorite games came out in 2011 and 2012. And my Top 10 hadn't changed much for years until I played them.

Oh yes, 3D World is a perfect example for me.

I'm not too big on platformers, but I really believe that 3D world is the best Mario game ever made.

I would call Xenoblade among the best JPRGs ever made. Easily top 5. maybe top 3. It came out in 2011.

I consider Skyward Sword the second best Zelda game after Ocarina of Time. 2010.

Mass Effect deserves to be called one of the greatest games ever made. I've only just started Deux Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, but it may be as well one of the best sci-fi games ever.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

I do feel it is harder for modern games since they don't have the nostalgia effect and the fact that it is harder to innovate now. But it is possible, Fire Emblem Awakening is in my top 5. And ALBW is a pretty consistent experience, it was a pretty good game but it is not gonna be up there with Ocarina or even ALTtP.

If it's name is "The Last of Us", sure. Otherwise no.

They can, but sadly they rarely do, not to say that they are bad, but they just don't have the charm of older generation games.
The only ones that come close are mostly some of the better indie games that use the same charm and creative gameplay elements that we used to see back in the SNES/PSX era.

Ya, it can happen. We've seen last of us, metal gear revengence, and 3d world happen.

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

They do, very occasionally. I think you will always have a strong love for the first games you played. The last game to make my top 5 favourite games was Super Mario Galaxy, which is fairly modern.

There are (at least) two modern games that are on my favorites of all time list:

  • Rayman Origins
  • Little Inferno

I imagine that if I ever get Rayman Legends it'll be on this list, too.

Donkey Kong Country Returns was the last one for me. (Perfect difficulty / lasted a good amount of time of which I enjoyed every second / No games I don't like in the series of which I think this is the best).

Galaxy might have been if it consisted of the second halves of 1 & 2 in one game.

(I think the last of Us is garbage. Not even close for something to be something I would consider the best there cannot be any part of it I don't enjoy playing of which for the last of us was nearly all of it).

I should also note that if you can overcome nostalgia, it's very easy for this to happen. Games aren't exactly getting worse, you know...

Well, favorite is a subjective term, so of course it can be done. If you love the game, even with flaws, then it will be a favorite. I also can see all the perfect reviews for GTAV, and not care one bit about it.

If we mean influence, importance or innovation, this one is much harder. We would need to give the game time to see how big its influence is in the medium. You can say 3D World is "yet another Mario" but it still has tons of new ideas to offer. If a game stands the test of time, it will somewhat trade its initial hype for nostalgia later on, but I think that no matter how much hype, a game without appeal will be forgotten years down the line.

I will end with Shigeru Miyamoto's words (kinda), in that resonance is the most important part here. If the game resonates with you, then you will grow to love it and become one of your favorites of all time.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Oh Legends will definitely blow your mind It is perfect! So good that it makes Origins (one of the best platformers ever) look amateurish.
