Games can be related by theme or form. Story is not the only possible uniting factor for a trilogy. Sonic or Mario 1-3 would each be a pretty clear trilogy as each builds on the same formula very closely (well, for Mario, that would be true if you count the real sequel rather than the US version).

Yes but, like I said, it has to be three. You can't just take the first three Sonic games and claim they are related by theme or form and claim they are a trilogy. There's more than just those three games. The same with Mario. However you COULD say the Mario NES trilogy. If you look at movies you can't call the first three Harry Potter films a trilogy (even though they tried selling the first three as that) - they're part of a series since there's five (six soon) of them. But yeah, there's not many gaming trilogies at all - it would be nice if Shenmue was completed with a third act.

What is the best gaming trilogy accross all systems? I realise that what constitutes a trilogy is open to debate, so whatever you consider to be a trilogy can be included.

Your choice of Wii Fit isn't as absurd as you might think as some have chosen possible future trilogies such as Pikmin.

I'm sure no-one minds you bothering this thread, the trilogy you have chosen by whatever definition is as valid as anyone elses.

I am very upset with Mad Gear's choice of Wii Fit. Please take it back!

The original Mega Man trilogy has to be my favourite. Part 2 is the peak, but they are very strong titles. They messed things up around the fourth game, so I like to think of it as a trilogy... with a brilliant ninth game

The Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy. The best thing to ease the frustration of the platformer+combat genre: the ability to rewind time. Amazing games, and the third one does a nice job of tying it all together despite differences between the first two.

I've changed my mind, Metroid Prime is the best trilogy! Hooray!

I would say my fave trilogy is Super Mario Bros. but that's the obvious choice. The most impactful trilogy has to be Resident Evil. I count it as a trilogy in both story and gameplay. You could consider it the Raccoon City trilogy. Those characters and events set up future RE stories wonderfully while at the same time supplying closure in its own right.

The Last Ninja Series. All of them are great and the series got better with each game, which is rare.

I consider a trilogy 3 games that are meant to be connected to each other, regardless if there are more in the series itself.
With that said, my choice would be:
1. metroid prime(GC)
2. prince of Persia(GC)
3. Super smash bros(...)(as of now)

How about...Back to the Future on NES? Sure, it's technically only two games, but it covers a trilogy of movies! Oh, wait, those games sucked...

On a somewhat (but not TOO much) more serious note, I would definitely put Mother right up there (and I'll finally have played them all once Tomato FINALLY finishes his translation of Mother 1 from Mother 1+2 on GBA). I would put the Sands of Time trilogy up there if Warrior Within wasn't so horridly glitched!

Y'know what's REALLY going to be an awesome trilogy when it's FINALLY completed? Beyond Good & Evil. That's right, for those who don't know, that was SUPPOSED to be a trilogy. Now that they FINALLY making #2, maybe they'll get around to the third as well?

Paper Mario is another great one that's already out, and Mario & Luigi will be awesome once the third is finished.

OOH! I just thought of what is almost certainly my FAVORITE favorite trilogy! The Phoenix Wright trilogy! That is, Ace Attorney, Justice For All, and Trials & Tribulations, of course. Not dissing Apollo Justice either, but he's clearly not part of the Phoenix Wright trilogy, even if he IS part of the Ace Attorney series.

Just play Earthbound Zero if you're okay with ROMs. There's even an easy patch if it's too hard.

I tried that already. Didn't run well enough to suit my tastes, plus emulating on the computer is awkward for me right now. Once Tomato finishes his patch, I can put it on my GBA flash cart that I bought specifically for the Mother series (best way to play Mother 3, hands down).
