With a few exceptions, it seems the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are pretty much clones of each other, with the vast majority of games being available on both platforms. This was a problem with the PS3 and 360 to an extent. While multiplatform games are benifitial, they shouldn't dominate your system's library. Looking at handhelds, The libraries for both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita are very different. The 3DS offers more colorful, quirky games and RPGs, while the Vita has more console style and niche games. The Wii and Wii U for all their 3rd party troubles, had/have more exclusive games than the competition.
I feel exclusives are important to a system as they give the consumer a reason to buy it along with, or over the competition. But with them becoming less common, I feel Sony and Microsofts systems are just identical twins with slight differences.
First off, it depends on what sort of games you're into. If you're someone like me who expects to play games that are guarantee enjoyable and rarely disappoint, its gonna be Nintendo obviously. If you're someone who want to get games but you're waiting for discounts and expect features that benefit your experience, you'd go with Sony or Microsoft. Obviously the majority will go for those two because they always reach the consumers expectations.
Exclusives help to convince the gamers of the quality games that are only there for that system and no where else and its because of that exclusiveness, Nintendo dominates interms of quality. As long as Nintendo has exclusive games, people will buy Nintendo products because of the pure innovation and their hardware being cheaper.
Yeah I agree with you, exclusives are becoming less and less important in the console market. Many people I know have bought a PS over an XBox only due to personal "taste", and not because of the exclusive games they could get. One thing that makes me think is also the fact Sony and Microsoft often promote their consoles by selling them in bundles along with games that are not only unexclusive, but also cross-gen (for example the PS4 being bundled with Watch_Dogs and Destiny). This impressed me because, being used to Nintendo, I expect a console to be sold along with games that "explain" what that console does that other doesn't.
I'd say right about now, rougly at least two-thirds of the games I'm keenly interested in, are exclusives to one platform or the other. That's pretty much the reason, I'm owning all current platforms. I intend to play all major multiplatform games on the PS4, X1 and WiiU, as well as 3DS and Vita, are purely for exclusives.
Notable exceptions to that dominance of exclusives for me, are the likes of Destiny (in the very near future^^) and The Division for example, probably also the Witcher 3 as well as Arkham Knight, maybe even RB6: Siege and Evolve.
As for exclusives, there are really to many to list, and most of them are well known anyways^^
I guess what I'm saying is, that no, I don't really see your point, and I have to agree with @19Robb92 on this. Beyond that, I think some of the most unique gaming experiences are to be found with exclusives, some upcoming Nintendo games like certainly Splatoon and Bayonetta 2 (which would not exist without Nintendo's support) are a case in point for this, but I would also like to give a shout-out to Microsoft on games like Sunset Overdrive (probably the same case as Bayonetta 2), as well as the Phantom Dust remake, and Crackdown 3, maybe even Scalebound.
Sony has a plethora of unique games, also most of them sofar more of the indie side of the spectrum, like Rime and Abzu, put I think Bloodborne also deserves to be mentioned, more will certainly emerge (There is just to little known about the nature of the new Silent Hill for example, or the likes of Until Dawn and WilD at this point I think, to merit such claims).
I think exclusives are as healthy as one could hope.
They are not as important as they used to be right now, but I need to see how 2015 will pan out before this statement becomes firm. They still exist in great numbers so I wouldn't say they are dying, just the emphasis isn't as strong as before.

I think the old days of "ONLY ON NINTENDO" sort of exclusives are definitely over, and it's sad. It seems like, even if a game is exclusive to a certain console, it has some sort of iteration on the PC or iOS or Android or whatever. It kind of takes the "specialness" away from it, in my opinion, but I was someone who grew up on console (and PC) exclusives as a way of life.
Outside of Nintendo platforms, yes I do think exclusive games are dying. Instead of actually getting a load of exclusives they use lies to try and pretend that popular mutliplatform games are exclusive (e.g. the Gamescom Tomb Raider announcement was really dumb) or use the typical "DLC first on platform X" strategy. However, if you include Nintendo then the day exclusive games will die is the day Nintendo either doesn't exist in the gaming market or they become a 3rd party publisher, neither of which look to happen in the foreseeable future.

The only new and upcoming games that interest me at the moment are exclusives with the exception of a few games that may end up being beautiful on PC like Project CARS. Major multiplatform games seem very much like things I've already played to death.
In some ways exclusives are fading away because the only true exclusives (the likes of Halo, Mario and Gran Turismo) seem to be getting more frequent while the 3rd party exclusives are staying exclusive for less and less time. New exclusive IP seems to be getting rarer as game development time is getting longer. I will probably be strung up for saying this but to me, the PS3 exclusives were (comparably) the weakest set that a Playstation console has had. PS1 and PS2 were almost untouchable.
On the other hand, MS have obviously been busy funding some pretty decent exclusives and Nintendo can only really get exclusives at the moment. Sony butchered loads of their studios towards the end of last gen so they're probably going to be making less exclusives themselves but they're the most popular console which means they will get exclusives off the back of their popularity.
I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.
There's tons of exclusives in the pipeline for all the consoles so I can't see how they are dying but the business model is different for 3rd parties than 1st or 2nd. They generally want their games on any platform they feel they have a potential market with to increase the bottom line so it makes sense for them to release it on multiple platforms.

The Wii U has tons of exclusives despite having fairly poor third party support.
You must be joking, new exclusives are announced all the time, both AAA and Indie. My PC, PS4 and Wii U have plenty of titles that i can only get on one of those platforms.
I don't know as I'd say they're dying out. There enough upcoming Xbox One exclusives I'm looking forward to that I decided to get one eventhough I already have a PS4.
Not with Nintendo as far as I can tell, it's why I stick with them. Every single game I own on the Wii U cannot be played on any other system at all....
...except 3 Ultimate......and Shovel Knight.....and Earthbound.....and Wind Waker......and Rayman Legends....and Assassin's Creed 4.....and-...ugh you get my point, I'm going to bed. >_>
