Topic: Anyone thought of this? Video games for the physically handicapped/challenged

Wonder if Nintendo {or anyone else} has thought about creating videogames that are geared for the physically handicapped and challenged. I am singlehanded due to mild cp and am legally blind. And I remember figuring out how to maneuver the controllers with my left hand only. I thought awhile back "what if they could insert a narration voice in the game that would literally inform the player of what the character is doing {ie 'Mario moves forward', 'Mario jumps up', 'Little Goomba approaching' etc}" or make controllers for one-handed people. Or make a controller that can attach to a person's wheelchair. Make it so that if a game has a time limit that that game can also work untimed. Even create software that recognizes ASL and braille. If this sounds like a whine or a rant it isn't. Actually wondering if accessibility has ever come up as a topic or issue before. Either in gaming circles. Or at the Nintendo company itself.

Let justice be done though the heavens should fall.

I am so sorry to hear of your handicaps.

To answer your question, someone asked the same question in a magazine...the response was good and apparently they may ask a few developers about giving the option to handicapped people where the controls can be altered to suit the desired person...as well as providing brighter colours for the partially blind (or close to blind).

I'm pretty sure there's games for personal computers made for the blind or partially sighted where an audio soundscape is used to direct the character - I think there's a horror title that does that; seems like it would work pretty well!

There's certainly plenty of Wii games that can be played one-handed as I'm sure you've discovered. I was considering making a list of WiiWare games for one-handed use on my blog because I'm thinking of getting my father who's had a stroke a Wii as he used to like playing games in the arcade and it might help him regain mobility in his right arm (though he is getting physical therapy otherwise). I think that the more flexible controls of the Wii are really great in providing gaming possibilities for people with limited mobility and can have a therapeutic effect. Hopefully someone will be prompted to do something for folk with more limited vision as well - we have Physio-Fun, so why not?

I'm mentally-handicapped (Aspergers) , but there should be games for the physically handicapped. If I broke my leg or was blind, I'd sure as heck want to play some Goldeneye.

From a thread I read ages ago quite a majority of Internet forum
goers have some kind of disability (mostly autism/aspergers), but yeah, the physically handicapped need some beneficial.

Between the fact that damn near everyone is diagnosed with a disability nowadays (even if they don't have one) and the anonymity of the internet I REALLY doubt that, to be quite blunt. Hell this is the first time in years I remember that I apparently have aspergers.

I have thought of this quite a bit though, especially after watching the literally blind walkthrough of OOT.

Can we please keep this thread focused on games geared toward physically challenged individuals? That's what the OP is asking for, not a discussion about what percentage of the internet has or has not been officially diagnosed with an autism-spectrum disorder by an MD. Thank you~

@Xkhaoz: wait, how would you breaking your leg hinder you from playing Goldeneye? Unless you had no hands and had learned to control the CC with your feet...?

I have read many articles that doctors and some care homes have introduced the Wii to its patients with physical handicaps both for physical therapy and for people that their is no cure for their handicap. Its has been a big success in some circles especially games like Wii sports and Wii play or whatever that game was called that came with the Wii Remote. I also do believe that there are games out there and maybe accessories out there made for Handicapped people you just might have to do a bit of searching maybe online.
