I don't play a whole lot of games with difficulty settings, but I usually try to start on normal. If that's too hard, I'd switch to easy, but I don't think I could consider a game beaten if I did it on easy mode. I often try, but usually fail, if I play games on hard mode, because I suck.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
The fence is for the people that neither loved it nor hated it. You are clearly in the yard.
I usually start games on the medium/normal difficulty. If there are additional unlockable features on the tougher difficulties, then I'll attempt a play-thru on those as well, but I've usually lost interest way before I even get through normal. Short attention span ftw!
The Backloggery has made me bad about this. I usually play it on Easy so I can earn the shiny new all the quicker, but if I like the game I usually run through it again on Normal.
I always start on Easy just to play through a game at a leisurely pace, then once I pass it I'll up the difficulty to Hard when I feel like playing through it again...

I always start the game on easy myself. On the other hand My little kings story game is set on normal. As soon as i master an easy mode, i hunt down the normal mode.

I am particularly useless at games and I have very limited time. I play on easy because because I usually dont have the opportunity to get all hardcore on a game ad it means that I wont get stuck, frustrated and then give up on something for so long that I cant come back to it ala No More Heroes. Usually if I enjoy something enough on easy I'll play through again on hard and normally I find that I rarely get stuck on hard after beating it on easy.
If the game has a option then normal for me on my first play through. If I really enjoyed the game then only will I crank up the difficulty on my next go around.
I like Corbie's philosophy of playing however you want. I've always figured that I bought the game for my entertainment, so if it's fun for me to play it on easy, then I will. If it's more fun on hard, then that's what I'll play it on. Super Mario Sunshine became a pain in the rear around the time I discovered the pachinko level and I stopped trying to get all the Shine Sprites. Super Mario Galaxy only really BECAME fun for me when I started playing some of the harder levels, so I played that one through to completion with both characters. When I played God of War on PSP, Normal felt just right to me until the final boss. That's when I switched to Easy. I tried a few more times, but never did defeat her on Normal...
Moco Loco If you find yourself spiritually drifting (as I was for far too many years), remember that Jesus can and will walk across the water to reach you and bring you back to shore.
