Its finally out and I put a few hours into it myself today and I must say that its Incredible! I had no idea how vast the premade character would be and I started with a Ninja but ended up going with FRUM (From Software is the dev lol) wich is the Blue Hero on the cover of the game. It just feel natural and the Ninja didnt for the first playthru. The controls are taking me some getting used to but I have to say I hope
Nintendo takes note of how well the ability to spin your sword after the hit works to the gameplay, and incorporates into the next Zelda title. Graphics are Awesome and Uber Unique and the NPC character are Really Funny. (One I talked to said "I got this Demon game that is really hard, you want to trade?" lol) there was also a really funny Mega Man inspired NPC script that was really funny as well.

.... Anyways let it all out here, what you think, fanboy rants, whatever..... the game is good enough to have its own thread, especially when its a Nintendo Classic that inspired it!

I didn't find the Mega Man nod that funny, but the music in that house was great. I just sat there and listened for awhile. They have a lot of tunes that just appear in one little place but are really catchy.

I am not good at designing characters for games, so I just picked a preset one, the succubus, whom I named SuccuBeth. I didn't realize until later that gender and class actually affect your character a bit, and I probably picked the worst combination for a starting player: female and scholar. That combination is good at magic but not physical strength, and you get spells pretty slowly. I upgrade my sword's strength a lot though, so hopefully it'll end up being okay. You can change characters at any time, but I kind of feel like that'd be cheating, haha.

The fairy is pretty funny. I love how impressed she is in the first room of the first dungeon when you solve the "puzzle" by hitting the very obvious switch in the otherwise empty room to open the door. Genius! Much better than Navi, for sure.

It's really impressive that From (what a terrible name) put out Demon's Souls and this so close to each other, both good, unique games -- well, at least unique for this generation, if you ignore the graphics. I'm eager to see what they do next (Zelda 2 ripoff, please!).

@adam.... I busted out laughing at that as well. Oh, I set my stern to Setting B such brings the camera up u bit and really helps a Lot. Didn't know I could change characters on the fly, that's awesome, and character classes is a great touch as well. Ready for this weekend lol!

Your stern? I think I'm on setting C, which is basically overhead. It is not the best looking angle, as you are basically seeing the top of your head, but you can see the most at this angle.

Lol Dang auto prediction. I have no idea how stern got in there. Setting B seems to work really well without dropping the graphics. I do like C as well. Heck I like all the options the game gives. Options usually are always good.

Looks like we are the only 3D Dot Game fans.

How far are you? I just got to level 4. Given that there are only 7 temples, that means I'm halfway through the game on my first run through after only a very short time playing, which is a bit surprising.

I've recently noticed that part of the game screen is getting cut off, but there is regrettably no screen repositioning option like every other PS3 game. I've just been trying to do this timed switch puzzle for maybe fifteen minutes, frustration meter running hot, and I look up the solution only to see it's extremely easy but one of the poles I need to use the hook shot on was not visible due to the bad screen position and the game forcing the worst camera angle on you inside dungeons. Grr.

LOL, I figured this thread would take off... I know I saw WolfRamHeart playing it yesterday. I only got to the second temple last night and my black Wii was on my doorstep when I got home today so I didnt play it today as I was playing Resort and NIGHTS. Ill get back to 3D Dot Heros tomorrow night. What I played was so much fun though, and I did read it was like 15 hrs to beat and then maybe 10 more for 100% completion so its not too short. I cant wait to 2nd playthru with a Scholar though, that just sound like a blast.

.... oh, Im loving the Avatar, Sig combo.... cracks me up

Hey Slapshot, nice thread you got going here! I'm glad to see this game getting some love on Nintendo Life. I actually did manage to pick up my copy and I've already put in a few hours into the game. Not as much as I would like considering my schedule has been pretty hectic as of late. Well, I am currently at the second temple. The game is indeed a lot of fun and I have to say that I am really enjoying it. I do agree with Adam that I wasn't completely blown away by it when I first started playing it but I still think that it is a great game. It does remind me a lot of Neutopia; which reminds me that I really should download the second game on the VC. Anyway, I'm going to try and spend some more time with the game tomorrow so I can catch up to you guys.

Neutopia 2 is great. If you liked the original, don't hesitate.

Playing Dot Game, I'm finding the world doesn't seem as open as reviews suggested. It drew so many comparisons to the original Zelda, but unless I just suck at exploring, there are a lot of artificial barriers impeding progress until you get the next dungeon's weapon. So far I haven't been able to get to one dungeon out of order, and I haven't found a whole lot of interest in the overworld, just two bottles and the dash boots, ignoring the handful of life shards I've come across.

Not that that's bad. Neutopia and later Zeldas are like that, too. Just another thing I was expecting from the hype train that did not get delivered. The "wire shot" definitely opens things up more, thankfully.

The best part of the game so far, and this is surprising since it draws influence from Zelda, is the fairy companion. Lee is a constant stream of hilarity.

Edit: Just got to the boss of level 4. Man, this game is getting tough. Getting better, too -- probably no coincidence. Might end up surpassing Neutopia in the Book of Adam very soon. I think I'll have to give up on my goal of playing through the game without using jars. I don't even know if I've gotten close to beating him yet, and I've tried quite a few games. It's a pretty neat boss battle. The bosses have so far been hit or miss. The first one (the snake) is laughable, and the level 3 boss is not much harder. I forgot what level 2's was, but I remember it being pretty good.

This game sounds even better than I thought it would be. Looking forward to trying it out myself.

@Adam.... I can see how it doesnt live up to hype, truely not much ever really does. For what it is (Zelda Clone) it does so well though. The massive sword and multiple character types, etc are just such a nice addition. If it was Too Much like Zelda I wouldnt want to play it. It has it own little touches and faster gameplay that keeps it different. Im bout to go grab a Classic Controller Pro for my Wii and eat and Its home to some 3D Dot Heroes!

.... oh and the $40 Brand New Price Tag is just Awesome, as I would have dropped the $60 but the lower price just makes it so much more worth it and I think shows confindence in the developers in the game they have created. Im willing to bet it will be on the top 10 games for sales on PS3 for a good while.

All I was saying is, of all the other Zelda-like games I've played (Zelda, some of its sequels, and Neutopia 1 & 2), so far I'd rank this at the bottom. But those are some of my favorite games. It is a genre that has yet to produce a bad game, but this is the worse -- if that helps to clarify.

EDIT: So it turns out now that I have the wireshot I can go all sorts of places. I've uncovered the vast majority of the map now. The only other temple I could get into though, I couldn't get past the first room, so I think there are checks in place to prevent sequence breaking, unfortunately. The firey Death Mountain-esque area is gorgeous.

I finally found where I could cash in my Small Blocks for swords, and got a few other swords elsewhere, plus a defensive ring. The blacksmith finally let me get Penetrate for my sword, and now when I dash I don't bump into walls every two seconds, thank Xenu. I also found where you can get color keys for those mystery rooms in each dungeon -- I've been wondering about that.

I think it's finally moved up to Neutopia-tier. Just took a little learning and getting used to. I'm finding a lot of my complaints (which were largely about the overworld, not the dungeon) are disappearing now that I have the wireshot and a sword with penetrate.

Wow Adam, you really are making excellent progress in the game! Thanks for telling us what those white blocks are for in the game. I was wondering what purpose they served. I really like your latest avatar! King Trode seems like a really good fit for you.

I hope you get some more time to play the game this weekend Slapshot. Oh and definitely get the Classic Controller Pro for your black Wii. I got mine in my Monster Hunter Tri Bundle and it is such a great controller! You'll love it!

I didn't get to play it as much as I would have liked today but I did complete the second temple. The Queen Bee boss was pretty cool but rather easy. My bombs made short work of it. I actually took no damage in that boss fight and discovered that you are awarded a trophy for defeating a boss without taking any damage. I think I got hit once when I fought the snake boss in the first temple so I didn't get the trophy. So, I decided to return to the first temple to replay the snake boss and got my trophy. I should have realized that there was a purpose to that statue that appears in the boss room that says "revive boss". Since I am still pretty early in the game I was wondering if either of you have seen those elusive white creatures that one of the townsfolk tasks you with hunting down. He says to slay ten of them. I think that I saw one in the desert region when I was wandering about but it took off really fast. Well, I'm heading to the third temple tomorrow. Hopefully, I will be able to devote more time to this game this weekend because I'm really enjoying it!

I've killed three of those super fast enemies now. There's this one place where it appeared twice but had no where to run to, and the other time I just got lucky.

I went back to the octopus boss this morning with an upgraded sword, and it went down in a few hits. I guess those upgrades make a big difference because I hit it well over 10 times each try before. Haven't beaten any bosses without taking a hit yet, but I generally don't take but one or two hits on my successful attempt. It took me awhile before I realized you could use bombs to flip the bee.

Now I'm at level 5. I'll probably play all weekend to finish the game now that I'm really getting into it.

Oh, and I'd pretend to be offended about the Trode comment, but I thought it was a good fit, too, haha. I barely started that game before I got this one, but I'm really looking forward to getting back to it. The only other Dragon Quest game I've played was 4, but I quit on the chapter when you become the merchant. This one seems more my style.

@WolfRamHeart.... yep, I grabbed my Classic Controller Pro last night and love it. It make NIGHTS so much easier to play. Well worth the $20 investment and much better than the original classic controller. Im getting Monster Hunter Tri today, so we will have to get some questing on sometime.

I beat temple two last night, and for some weird reason, I never flippin tried to use bombs on the bee and it kicked my butt like 5 times lol. I did find that the bow helped make somewhat quicker work of him. I ended up going back to the overworld and dropped about 900 coins into upgrading my sword so I went back and slaughter him with only one hit.

Oh, and thanks for letting us know about the trophies for no hits on bosses Wolf as Im fixing to fire it up again and Im going back immediately to drop the first two bosses and grab those trophies before progressing any further. I havent even looked at the trophy list, but I do want to add this game to my Platinum List. Really cool way to add the trophy Implement there by From Software IMO.

I did kill ONE of the little white blobs. North of the guy that says that, well you actually go East and blow through some stones to progress North and I found 3 up there, but one ran to the edge of the screen and I changed screens and lost him trying to corner it. Best place Ive found for looking for them.

Im also enjoying the music changes for the different enviroments, and I still love to watch the little Dots scatter when you defeat enemies. Im just really enjoying the game so far. The little improvement and upgrades to the classic formula is so nice. Had it played uber retro, I dont think I would be as happy with the game. Nothing will trump the original Zelda ana A Link to the Past but this game will definately hold a special place in my gaming collection forever from now on. I can see that already.

Well, I beat it! Very good game. I don't see myself replaying it for a number of reasons: overworld isn't that memorable and is kind of slow and difficult to traverse, and some parts of the game are frustrating (stupid octopus). But it was really neat.

I was looking at a guide online to see how much I missed, and apparently a lot, including one major omission. Without giving anything away, let me just say you should make a separate save file after each dungeon, or at least after the 6th one (the one where you get the last orb). There are a lot of events that can only be triggered at certain times, and a few, especially one big one that I unfortunately missed, are no longer available after you bring the six orbs to the king.

One thing I feel a bit cheap about is, due to my screen issues, I had to use a guide once to discover a door that was hidden from view on my TV, and while looking it up I accidentally learned of something that seems too obscure otherwise but led me to getting an item that I don't think I'd have gotten far into the last dungeon without -- maybe not even beat it at all, hard to say. So if you get to the last dungeon and one of the bosses seems impossible to dodge, maybe talk to some NPCs and explore a bit.

All right, now back to Dragon Quest 8. Have fun, slow pokes, haha.

@Adam... lol, glad you enjoyed it. I WILL Platinum the game. I would prob be right there with you but Ive dropped nearly 15 hours into Monster Hunter Tri this weekend lol. So Im alternating back and forth. I did beat the third Dungeon and took me about ten tries to kill the boss without getting hit. Got it though. Thanks for the info on the backup save file as I will remember to do that. I do plan on playing back through it as a scholar as I just think it will be fun, and Im sure I will prob develop the character myself. We shall see. Ive just loved my time with the game so far.

I really don't see that the character makes a huge difference. I played as a female scholar. Kind of pointless since magic is generally only useful in specific situations, though later dungeons will have you using a couple spells pretty regularly. Adds an extra bit of challenge, I'm sure, since you're weaker, but you do unlock a hard mode when you clear the game, and supposedly you can access a special one-hit death mode if you use a certain name, if you're feeling really crazy.
