Topic: What do you think about online multiplayer?

in another thread I saw a bunch of people arguing about Singleplayer games being forced into having online modes
in my opinion online multiplayer is cool not mandatory.some games that seem like Singleplayer only can have very interesting Multiplayer modes like Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon I really like that game's multiplayer.
and, yes I made this thread because I decided to avoid WiiU threads until I have one(it's hard to have an argument without knowing anything)
so what does everyone thinks about online multiplayer?

Honestly I dont much care for it cause of the online communities. I played a few online games like Street Fighter IV and a few of the WWE games and it seems all I get is foul mouth kids or drunk/high idiots. Now I understand online multiplayer is a big thing now in gaming so it doesn't bother me if the game has it in it I dont have to play it. but than again cause I dont play it it doesn't matter if there isn't one.

My biggest gripe is when a company sacrifices the single player mode for the multiplayer if its meant to be a single player game i.e. Tomb Raider. Dont get me wrong TR was a great game I just felt that the single player mode was a bit short and they could have length it with some DLC but it seems to be they put all their thought into multiplayer mode.

I hope that all made sense.

@Tasuki yeah I agree on your point of view. if it lacks multiplayer, no problem. if having multiplayer spoils the singleplayer mode I'd rather not have it.

I only really care about online for genres that are super fun with it. Like racers, shooters, or fighters. Aside from that though, I don't feel that EVERY game needs an online mode, like many people seem to claim.

It's ok as long as the devs want it to have online multiplayer instead of "we have to because that's what the cool kids are doing!"

I think one of the Iwata Asks was about how the dev team had to prove online multiplayer would be worthwhile for Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon as they didn't want to put it in just to make the game more popular (or something like that). Which I believe is Reason # 17 why I'm still a Nintendo fan despite their recent troubles.

Lets just get rid of multiplayer from all games!
Since no one likes to lose to someone better then them online.
Street Fighter: Now a one player game, where you vs. no one.
Smashbros: Have fun playing story mode only.
Mariokart: The winner is you, since no one else is racing.

Multiplayer is there to give a game replay value, or for those with a competitive nature, which all gamers should have.
I understand that most of you own an Nintendo console, and don't know what a good multiplayer game looks like, but there out there.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Hell, I don't even play multiplayer in Shooters, Fighters, or Racing games, and for shooters I find they're better off without it at all. Really, I just don't like multiplayer, and I find I gravitate towards games that don't even have MP at all.

Multiplayer can be a pretty big selling point for me. Even if it's just a tacked on 2 map deathmatch, it can increase the longevity of the game, and it never hurts the singleplayer.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Oh yes it does. I can't think of how many games only wound up worse simply because the focus shifted to multiplayer. You can't have a good one without the other, and that's been true since multiplayer went online.

I kind of like when a game has multiplayer but allows the player to play it alone.... I don't have many friends to play with and random online matches are worse than playing with bots sometimes. people love saying stupid dumb stuff in the mic. just because it's online and no one there knows them......

Some games are just not meant for multi-player action; other games are. By the way, any one looking for a really cool, retro multiplayer online strategy with a great community, then I highly recommend The Grid

Play The Grid for free on CodeElf! http://codeelf.com/games/the-grid-2/grid/
Read all about The Grid on IndieGames.com, it has a great community: http://indiegames.com/2012/07/browser_game_pick_the_grid.html
Quick description: "Build your empire while defending from other little empires seeking to rule the entire Grid. Hire wizards, earn gold, go on pilgrimages to become a Monk and then a Seer, construct cities and farms to create more assets for yourself... and so much more!"

Having options is usually a good thing.

I like local multiplayer a lot, but there are many times when I don't feel like driving 15-20 minutes to a friend's place just to game or I want to play with a friend, cousin, etc that doesn't live near me. It's pretty nice when I can just go online and play a game w/ some friends for an hour or two, then hop off and just get on with the rest of my day. To be honest, there are many games like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate where I spend much more time playing online instead of locally or in single player mode.

Its kind of weird seeing people talk down on online multiplayer. Its an extra feature that's not mandatory or for everybody. If you don't like it, don't use it.

My opinion is a simple one. If you make a physical game then it should have a good solid offline game mode as not everyone has offline. If you bring a game out and it is online dependent then you should die in a fire if you charge for it.
