I believe Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes place just after Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. Ok I know that sounds weird, but hear me out. It has been confirmed by Eiji Aonuma that Breath of the Wild, takes place just after Ocorina of Time, which leads to 3 branching paths in the timeline. Now alot of people can connect this game to Wind Waker and the other games in its timeline, which would lead people to think that this game takes place after Spirit Tracks, however that cannot be the case. As you see the Hyrule in BOTW is the original Hyrule, the one created by the goddess's. The Hyrule found after Wind Waker is a new Hyrule, the new home found by Link and Zelda. So it couldn't take place anywhere in the Wind Waker timeline due to the original Hyrule being lost forever at the end of Wind Waker, due to the King of Red Lions wish. This would then lead it to the last 2 timelines. Now some people can see connections to either Twilight Princess, or The Link to the Past. So its hard to say which one it would belong to, that is if not for the lore of the game.

Spoilers: Now Its no secret that Zelda 2 may have the biggest map of any Zelda game, which matches just how Big BOTW's map is. Now you could argue that every Zelda game has a world just like that, in that you can only explore Hyrule in other Zelda titles, but that is where the problem lies. In every Zelda game Hyrule is but a small portion of the map, atleast compared to Zelda 2 and BOTW, and that fits with the lore of Breath of the Wild. You see the King of Hyrule tells Link the history of Hyrule. And how he, "Expanded for the sake of his people", And so he expanded Hyrule for miles and miles, making it a much larger kingdom than it actually was. So this fits as Zelda 2 and BOTW are the only 2 Zelda games with a massively big Hyrule, thus expanded Kingdoms far bigger than any Hyrule in Zelda history. Secondly we have, "Calamity Gannon". At the start of BOTW, Princess Zelda warns us about Calamity Gannon, a monster of pure destruction and chaos. The lore behind Calamity Gannon also fits with the lore of Zelda 2. After Gannon was defeated once again, it is said that Gannon could now only be revived with the blood of Link. Which if you got a game over, Gannon would once again be revived. But what would happen if Link won? He would have saved the day, and Gannon would not be able to be revived. Gannon would not be able to reincarnate, and he would have lost for good.............But what if that wasn't the case? What if Gannon used the triforce of Power for 1 last ditch effort. As Zelda said, Gannon gave up on his reincarnated form, and rather now he became a being of pure rage and carnage. This Gannon is the personification of his rage, created by the triforce of power. This would make sense as being the only way for him to be revived once more with Link actually succeeding in his quest.

Now those points do make some sense and definitely fit lore wise, but this theory still has some questionable stuff. Like how could the Korok be in this game if it takes place in Zelda 2? Well as the lore goes the Kokoriko Children could turn into that form as an attempt to hide themselves, which would make alot of since in BOTW as Ganon laid waste to the world just 100 years prior to when we start the game, so it would make sense for them to turn into that form to hide from Calamity Gannons destruction, Just after Zelda 2. Theirs many more flaws but those can be easy to explain.

Case in point, I believe there is enough evidence to place this game far after Zelda 2. For having multiple connections to BOTW, as BOTW also has alot of connections to Zelda 2 and many other games from that timeline. And seeing how BOTW seems to be the end of a timeline, its safe to say it would be far after Zelda 2, and it would be the end of that timeline.

i dont know i can see a split timeline one where we dont save hyrule and the beast floods the resorvoir and the damn breaks thus flooding the land leading to Wind Waker. i have noticed a few things with the stories being told nobody has mentioned anything about OoT events, or the events of majoras mask, mostly they keep telling the stories about 10k years ago making me think either this is right after the first game or its a re-imagining of the first game as some have thought. if i remember someone decoded the sheikah text and it spelt out the name of the first zelda in japan. so either a tribute or the reimagining of the first they even made the game in 2d like the first zelda to get basic map layout.

@Almighty-Koz Well in the Zelda Timeline Zelda 1 is far after OOT, and Zelda 2 is after Zelda 1. So I can see BOTW being far after Zelda 2, and with the ending I can see it being the end to a timeline.

I don't see why can't we discuss this in the main botw thread. Or the spoiler thread.

Let's continue there~
