Hi all, I've got a birthday present to buy for my sister, and she really likes the 'Tales of' Series. I was looking for similar games, and the two that I've found are Trials of Mana and Ys VIII

Has anyone one had any experience with these games, which do people recommend.

Both are great games!

Ys8 is more meaty I think, there are a lot of stuff to do. ToM is more "go from point A to point B".

Keep in mind Ys8 is a port of a PS Vita game, so visually it's a bit rough, but it runs great. ToM on the other hand is new and mostly looks great. But both are very colorful.

Personally I was more invested in the plot of Ys8, which is about a group of marooned people trying to survive on the island they're stuck on, building a community. At the same time, it's about exploring the mystical island and discovering its secret.

The plot of ToM isn't anything special, but the unique* thing is that you can experience the story from six different characters viewpoint.

Both are action-RPGs and the combat is great in each title.

As I said, you can't go wrong with any of these games. But I give the slight edge to Ys8.

*Unique for its time. After all, it's a remake of a game from 1995.

Hmm, I take it she's played Tales of Vesperia, then? Ys VIII is more like that then Trials of Mana is, too ..... I like both a lot but if it's one or the other, I'd go for Ys

Trials of Mana runs better on Switch, but Ys VIII is a better game.

I'd recommend the latter, personally. The mix of gameplay systems, ARPG combat, and Zelda-esque exploration was compelling from beginning to end.

While I've never played ToM, Ys VIII is an amazing game.

Thanks all sounds like a clean sweep, I'll go with Ys VIII for the gift. I'll add both to my wishlist and wait til they go on sale to get them for myself. As it sounds like they're both quite good.

Ys VIII is very similar to a Tales game. It's also just a great game, probably the best in the series. Go with that.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.
