I just picked up this game today, i cant wait to get off of work to sink my teeth into. I've been itching for a new rpg game to play.

The Switch version is bad and the publisher lied about some technical points...

They sais that the game will be 1080p/30fps docked ! That's totally not TRUE !

The cutscenes are sometimes above 720p but the game in itself is 720p and lower (a shame when you see what is on screen) and the worst part, the framerate which is already divided by 2 (60fps constant on PS4) is not stuck to 30fps on the Switch version... UNACCEPTABLE ! The framerate drops to 20 go back to 30, move to 25, go back to 30 etc... It's insane how the optimisation is garbage...

In portable mode it's even crazier, the resolution goes below 480p with framerate issues ! INSANE !

I quote a part of the review from RPGsite here :

"Previously I stated in my E3 impressions that the game ran at 720p/30FPS in both handheld and docked mode. Sadly, that isn't the full picture. While docked does sometimes see the game rising above 720p in select scenes, in others it appears to actually dip below that target. In handheld mode, things get even messier with some scenes appearing to render at a resolution below 480p. Most of the time the resolution does indeed hover closer to that 720p target, but the drops are simply impossible to ignore. The same, unfortunately, goes for framerate."

What a dissapointment to stay polite !

Just completed the second dungeon (the one with the poison turtle & chameleon bosses). Game is great. The combat is fun (though I'm still not confidant with my Flash Guard/Step timing), I love the tight knit community feeling with your growing group of castaways, the impressive environmental variety they've been able to squeeze out of the deserted island theme, and overall I haven't been this hooked on a game sense I played BotW back in February.

Every once in awhile the image will get blurry for a fraction of a second (the aforementioned resolution drops?), and I've noticed there's some slight environmental blur in areas with a particularly large amount of foliage, but it's nothing that's impeded gameplay as far as my personal experience. 95-98% percent of the time it's very crisp with bold colors & lush environments. Also, I believe they said it's going to get 4 patches across the launch month period (the day one patch being the first, that cleaned up some translation errors amongst other things), with some of the later ones slated to clean up what few visual blemishes there currently are, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Umm.. translation errors from a year old PS4 port? What happened there?

@SKTTR, Apparently there was one untranslated sentence early on (as in still Japanese text), and a few other oddities in review copies of the game, but they patched that up with a launch day patch.

As far as the PS4 version, apparently the initial translation was so bad they had to completely scrap it and patch in an entirely new translation months after release, so it must just be a publisher issue.

Just playing this now, as it was only released in the UK today.

Gameplay seems pretty solid, but anyone else finding it reallly...ugly? Particularly environmental textures like grass and rock, and when in motion. This is the first Switch game that I've played where I've had any real problems with the graphics but I'm finding it quite jarring at the moment.

@Buizel
Think that's just how the game looks.

Take a look at the Vita version- it makes the Switch version look like it's running on a PS4 Pro

All have sinned and fall short of Gods glory. Wages of sin is death. Romans

God so loved the world He sent His only Son- whoever believes on Him has eternal life. Unless you believe, you will die in your sins. Whoever believes, rivers of living water flow within them. John

Buizel

@JaxonH Yeah, it does largely seem to be a stylistic choice and its a bit of a shame really. I would've personally preferred a little less detail if it meant everything looked and felt smoother and more polished.

I haven't noticed any graphical errors, but I'm not one of those kind of guys.

Game is way different than I expected. More like Bayonetta than Xenoblade. Still alright so far. I'd give it a 6 or 7/10.

I love the look of the game, personally. Reminds me of something I would have played on the PS2, and the environments look sort of like something out of a 3DS Monster Hunter game.

Oh, and I'm still not noticing any weird fluctuations in the clarity of the image, even during cutscenes, like some people have been talking about.

@Buizel I totally agree with the game being ugly. It makes sense considering it originated on the vita, but playing it docked makes it look pretty awful. I got used to the visuals for the most part, but in certain areas when rotating the camera it looks especially bad.

That being said, I'm having a ton of fun with this game! I'm about 28 hours in and the story is really intriguing. Like most JRPGs it took a few hours to get into but I'm really loving it now. I just wish the main character wasn't silent as it seems out of place for this game, plus he probably has a great voice actor.

A couple other small gripes I had with the game are the default controls and Flash Guard/Dodge. Flash Guard/Dodge timing feels awkward. As for the controls, ZL and ZR are way more comfortable to use than L and R so why did they choose two useless shortcuts to map to ZL and ZR while L and R are just about the most used buttons in the game. Pressing X for targeting and using the right stick to switch targets is also a weird choice.

@Xaldin The default controls are awful. Aside from ZL and ZR being mapped to unnecessary functions, why is A attack??? Thankfully, I remapped the controls to be a mix of Bayonetta and BotW. Resetting the camera and lock-on was moved to ZL and dash/jump/attack was made exactly like BotW, while I put R and ZR as my flash guard/dodge respectively, a bit like Bayonetta. I might put A as my flash guard considering that's how you parry in BotW though.

Sprinting will always remain horrible though. Your characters just turn into an awkward car, it's horrible.

The default controls suck. The first thing I did was remap them. I wish every game had full support for button remapping.

Lol, it's one of the best looking games on the Vita.

Anyway, this dev has never had a big budget. Of all the long-running RPG franchises, this probably has the smallest budget.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

I noticed the screen blurring during a cut scene just a minute ago. Not a huge deal, but weird.

Played a ton more, and damn, the night-time mission is ramping up too quick for me, will leave that be until I upgraded my weapon and leveling myself more...

@darkfenrir, are you talking about the side quest where you have to return to Coral Cave at night? If so, yeah, that's pretty brutal. I used up most of my healing items, but luckily I managed to get far enough to open a shortcut in the first room. I've since left, but I've restocked and will try heading back in.

BTW, have you completed the side quest where you have to feed Sir Carlan? I ask because I don't have the recipe he wants (I only have Fish Soup, Omelet, & Ratatouille).

@RR529 Yeah that side quest, I think I'll go back there when my levels and equipment are a little higher (Finishing the next story mission looks like it'll be good time for it).

And yeah, I just got that side quest and I don't even have Ratatouille recipe xD

Don't you get that recipe from a treasure chest? I had it immediately when accepting that sidequest. Then again, I've been doing literally every sidequest and exploring everything I could as early as possible.
