Hey, noticed there wasn't a thread on this game yet so thought I'd oblige everyone with this minimal effort. ūüėú

Playtonic have come a long way since their first kickstarted title, thanks to a growing team of developers and much success, with this aesthetically polished second attempt recently being shown off at E3 2019.

Unlike its predecessor, which took inspiration from the 3D worlds of Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a 2.5D platformer akin to Donkey Kong Country, with 3D overworld areas where players will solve uniquely designed puzzles. It's due to be released on October 8th 2019.

The new play style looks intriguing and with David Wise & Grant Kirkhope once again pulling the musical strings, the potential is surely great.. but never mind my biased early impressions, how do you believe it'll measure up to the pair's first outing? Feel free to share any thoughts below..

I'm surprised by the disappointed of it being 2D. I know people liked the idea of 3D platformers making a comeback but the team were responsible so of the most beloved 2D platformers ever made and I like the look of the Yoshi's Island baby style health system.

Which 2D platformers did they make? I thought they were from Rare?

Looks quite good anyway. Looks very similar to the DK Country games. I'd prefer full 3D though definitely.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

The original Donkey Kong Country/Land games were from Rare.

To be fair, I'm disappointed about it being a 2D platformer because I have plenty of 2D platformers, it doesn't really stand out much as a 2D platformer, and quite frankly, I never liked Rare's 2D platformers from back in the day. On the other hand, Yooka-Laylee had potential to be great that it didn't quite reach, and I honestly hoped they'd learn from their mistakes, and build upon the foundations they'd laid out to make a truly great 3D platformer.

It's just a shame, really. Unless this has fantastic level design like Tropical Freeze did, I don't have much reason to care about it.

It's been out on both the eshop and retail for a while now.

I did initially think to myself it's just another 2D platformer but the Yoshi's Island baby style health system has really caught my eye. I was huge fan of Yoshi's Island and that mechanic hasn't carried through on the recent Yoshi games so this looks like a decent substitute.

Figured I would bump this since it comes out tomorrow.

I asked Playtonic, but I doubt they will answer, does anyone know if this will be a midnight release? Or is it gonna come out at noon tomorrow? I'm gonna assume noon, but midnight would be nice. I wished it was like this for all games. lol

This looks pretty cool! It's on my watchlist for a potential future quite period.

Just got my physical in the post, was sad there was no instruction manual. But at least there is a nice picture on the inside Untitled

@Bunkerneath,

Mine displays a huge, ugly text box with French text. It covers a big part of the lovely artwork. Insane.

And why is there a day 1 update of almost 2 gb?! Isn't that a bit big?

@sanya_exe It was out at midnight, was playing a bit before i went to bed

Nintendo have a strange release schedule. This being released at midnight, and Ori unlocked at 3-4pm

Joeynator3000

@Jimez It wasn't out where I was, went to bed around 3 in the morning. Soooo....yeah. lol

EDIT: Anyways, I played a couple of levels, music is awesome as expected. I can't seem to play much of this game right now, or any game for that matter. My wrist is hurting and bothering me again. TwT

Was wondering, does this game have any bosses? (besides the final boss...and the...tutorial thing at the beginning, lol)

Really thinking about this one. I finished the first game, but I thought the controls were a little floaty feeling and the camera was still a little bad even with the patches.

People who have this: Does it FEEL like Donkey Kong Country in the platforming levels (I ask because that's what all the review outlets are relating it to)? Does the character have weight and momentum this time around, or does it still feel floaty?

That's kind of my main thing if I wanna get this now or wait for a sale.

@rallydefault To me, it feels tigher than the first game. They've certainly designed each level with more love than before, and there are some secret areas which usually contain some worthwhile loot for later on. Yooka and Laylee don't feel as spongy as before, so that can only be a good thing.

@rallydefault game controls fine I'd say. It's in a bit of an uncanny valley with DKC...very similar but not quite the same.

I'm about 4 levels in and quite ambivalent about the game. It's reasonably enjoyable, but the level design so far has been quite pedestrian and I just feel like I'm playing an inferior DKC. On a console where we've been spoiled for 2D platformers it could be that "reasonably enjoyable" isn't enough to keep me going.
