Topic: Would you rather have a Smash 4 Deluxe Edition now or wait for a Sequel?

Ever since the reveal of the Nintendo Switch, fans (well at the least hardcore smash fans) have been asking: "Where's smash?!". This had me wondering since there is so much speculation about Nintendo will keep the momentum going in 2018, they even increased production even further by April if I'm not mistaken.
Would you guys be satisfied with a deluxe version of smash 4 or would you rather wait for a fully fledged sequel?

Personally I think I would rather have a sequel. I'm probably in the minority for this but I believe it's still too soon for a smash bros port or game. We haven't even finished the Switch's first year and yet fans are still pestering Nintendo and flooding directs asking where is smash. Imo the most we'll see for smash in 2018 is a teaser for a port or a new sequel.
But what do you all think?

@DairyOverdrive I think everyone would prefer to get a full sequel, but feel a port is more likely/feasible. Even then, I suspect a potential 5 would see the least amount of changes to physics compared to other entries, since there's very few complaints towards Wii U's. Given the large amount of new potential content from existing (Mario Odyssey, Breath Of the Wild, Xenoblade 2, Samus Returns and/or Metroid Prime 4 promo) and new (ARMS, Splatoon) franchises, not to mention any other potential third parties, it seems like a lot to add for a simple port.

Smash games have generally been mid-to-late additions to a system's library. Melee was the exception of being a launch title, but was heavily rushed to meet that deadline and it shows in some aspects. It was frankly very, VERY lucky for it to turn out the way it did.

Alone, a force. Together, a force of nature.

Personally, in Nintendo's shoes, I'd be porting everything that either sold a million or more or got a green on Metacritic from the Wii U onto the Switch. With the lack of backwards compatibility and the poor sales generally of the Wii U, there'll be a lot of people who want to buy the games again or who missed out entirely.

It also leads to a much fuller release schedule of first party games and reduces their reliance upon third parties to avoid the droughts they had late in the Wii's lifetime and pretty much throughout that of the Wii U. Stick everything that's coming out on the 3DS on the Switch too, and they could be putting out a couple of AAA games every month like clockwork.

Since ports can typically be made a lot more quickly than a new game, and often handled by less experienced teams, that shouldn't prejudice against the development of a new Switch game so long as there's a good gap of 3-4 years between the two coming out. Other publishers get away with a release every year for some franchises even, although I'd prefer Nintendo didn't go down that route.

Port for sure, Smash 4 is so big that a new game would be a downgrade.

A straight port of Smash 4 seems most likely, yes, but a new game would definitely be preferable--I mean, just think of all the new content they could include! Ideally, a new game would basically be Smash 4 but without all the copy characters, and adding new stages, new modes, revamped visuals, and adjusted physics. New characters from franchises like ARMS, Splatoon, and Shovel Knight--maybe even a surprise like Doom Guy or another third-party character--could freshen things up. And none of this would require significant development time, as Nintendo simply needs to adjust the base game of Smash 4 while changing up the roster, modes, etc. until it becomes something new.

Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.

@meleebrawler To be honest I mostly agree with your comment about a port.
The only thing that would bother me about a Deluxe version would be the name.
But I think smash 5 could have a lot of potential characters especially with the new Nintendo Ips like Splatoon and Arms and maybe even other 3rd party characters. As for the physics they could stay the same, but it would be amazing if there was a setting to change the physics and speed to melee. That would be the biggest smash game bringing in new players and even older fans.

But if they were to just make a port I could imagine:
All DLC characters included
Stages from both versions
New stages inspired by recent games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon, Arms, etc. etc.
Smash run would stay as a 3ds exclusive

There wouldn't be much addition if there was a port imo.

@Matt_Barber Absolutely, from a business standpoint it almost seems like a no-brainer to bring a port over. Especially with everyone smash fan begging for a port.

But I have this feeling that if Nintendo were to bring a port of the game in 2018 then there would be complaints for a lack of added content. That's why I think just a quick port would be a waste of potential for the game. Maybe if content was big enough then I would be fine with a port.

A counter argument for my comment would be ignoring the install base and community of Smash 4. Is it really okay for us to ignore the present competitive community and install base of Smash 4?

@Grumblevolcano I'm curious to why a sequel would be a downgrade compared to smash 4.

I feel like they ripped off wii u owners if they're going to put an improved port of so many games on switch.
I wouldn't want a smash 4 port. I find it a bit sad to take so much away from what made the wii u good, but on the other hand, I could see why they would want to get as many people as possible to be able to play their wonderful games, so I guess I'm okay either way?

@PainterPaw To be fair they'll probably make us pay full price for the port

A new game, no question. I already spent so much money on Super Smash Bros. Wii U and the GCN controllers. I'm sick and tired of ports, and I can not believe that people are actually asking for them.

The tail end of the Wii U and the Switch has seen some great titles coming out of series that had stagnated like Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the Wild. I would love to see for something similar happen with Super Smash Bros. As technically great as SSB4 was it just didn't feel incredibly inspired. I want to see a SSB break us from this stagnation.

@Harmonie To be fair the demands for ports are high and it's only natural for Nintendo to deliver them. You have to understand that the Wii-U had a terribly low install base and the poor marketing didn't help the games on it either.
The ports brought to the Switch are enhanced, bring more additional content, better controls, and are now portable. I don't see the problem in that. I would worried if the year's line up was only ports, but seeing how we've been getting new monthly releases, I'd say what Nintendo is doing is just fine.

But back to Smash I agree on a sequel but wouldn't be mad if a port was to come.

@Jamesbest47 Could you please not go off-topic? If you want to discuss something else I suggest asking your question by making your own separate forums post.
That being said I haven't tried the hori kickstand seeing as I don't have it, and that I can't open my Nintendo Switch until Christmas....

One thing that springs to mind is Nintendo's forthcoming paid on-line service. Smash would be a great title to launch it with but developing an entirely new game from scratch in the limited time might be a bit too much to ask for. As such, would a Smash 4.5 with all the features of the Wii U game, plus portability, an enhanced roster, new stages, and a first class on-line multiplayer experience be enough to swing it?

Matt_Barber

iLikeUrAttitude

@Matt_Barber Come to think of it Nintendo still hasn't revealed all the details about their online services yet, or even a release for the virtual console. I wouldn't be surprised if the paid online services were pushed back further.
A port would be faster and would make everyone (or mostly) happy but I would still prefer a sequel, a port of Smash doesn't feel right.
But onto answering your question: I would be okay with what you just listed but in the long run I think a Switch version could use more modes, more players at a time (in docked mode no way I'm playing 8-10 players smash on that small screen), more characters if you weren't just talking about the DLC ones, improved physics and maybe a setting to change it back to melee to bring the old players, and maybe some surprise characters from Splatoon, Arms, or heck even Doom.
Also I think @ilikeike is on to something, Nintendo could just use the base game, make a bunch of improvements and additional content and call it a sequel. They did it with Splatoon and there were no complaints.

Have a port of the impossibly big Smash 4 next year in the wake of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe performing better than expected. Maybe add some 3DS stages, Smash Run for those who have one Switch each and a new fighter or two. Then release a new Smash whenever that is ready. I don‘t know how a Smash 5 is that is with 99.9% certainty of smaller scale compared to the Smash 4 port.

Maybe, that Smash 4 port could be more like a service that is being added to in the months or even years after release with new stages, fighters, trophies and so on. The reason I‘d rather have this than a Smash 5 is that the latter, like mentioned above, will never be at the scale Smash 4 is at right now. So it’d make more sense to just take the port and add to it and earn money that way.

First of all.... why would they make smash5 smaller than smash4?

Second... everybody has been asking for smash since release... at this point it would just be lazy to do a port. ... the only way it would be acceptable is to reveal smash5 with a release date before the end of 2018 while offering a port of smash4 immediately.

To be honest I'd be more than happy with a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe type deal. Smash Bros is more or less the same game every time around anyway just with better graphics and new content. The Wii U and 3DS versions already had a lot of content especially when you include the DLC. I don't understand why some people are so against the idea of having a release of Smash Bros 4 with all the DLC plus some of the 3DS/Wii U exclusive stages plus a few new characters/stages.

People are asking how Smash 5 would be smaller. I wonder how on earth could Smash 5 possibly be bigger. Smash 4 plus DLC? That's 56 characters. Add a few more like the Inklings and you're easily upto 60 characters. And then for stages between the two versions there are about 80 across the two versions. Even if they skipped a few stages like the MiiVerse stage that's still a lot, specially if they add a few new ones.

For comparison Brawl had 35 characters and 41 stages, Melee had 25 characters and 29 stages. I can't see how a Smash 5 could possibly have more than 60 characters and 80 stages a deluxe version could potentially have.
