If the engines these games are built on scale as well as they do (with mario odyssey in unreal it seems like it) it's probable that the entire initiative was theirs.
You see a new system, that flies off the shelves, with absolutely nothing competing with what you're doing on it, where any game is easy to port to because it doesn't need rewrites... If that's what you see as a developer I'd sure do it too.
@BLP_Software there was this little unreal logo in the bottom left corner at the e3 trailer. It could mean something else though, in hindsight.
I don't really care as much, just that I know the stuff that's out there currently has al kinds of scalable graphic quality built in so as to not have to do that optimisation manually as a developer.
Some middleware platforms have it these days even. Even unity, but gotta check.
@erv Just watched the E3 trailer, no Unreal Logo. There was one at the end of the Yoshi trailer at the bottom of the screen, where it said powered by Unreal Engine.

@BLP_Software ah, my bad then. That's probably where my confusion came from.
Case in point though, these engines can scale up and down the spec ladder more easily. So wolfenstein being a modern game could probably be one of more to come just because the cost barrier has come way down.
@erv Wolfenstein and DOOM both use id Tech 6, a proprietary engine.
The thing is, that engine is built to utilise the relatively new Vulkan API, which is where the great PC performance comes from. The developers allegedly had issues with getting desirable performance on PS4 and Xbox One, hence some objects pop out, and the resolution is very dynamic. But those systems don't have Vulkan.
Switch does, so this engine coming at all, is a testament to what the right tools can do on Switch.

Don't you worry Bethesda.... I got you back. This and doom will be day 1 and I'm proud to make these purchase. Thanks this is a market untapped and the switch needed it so bad.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Dude cmon. Are you ever happy? This is good news. REALLY good news. Why do you always have to put such a negative spin on things? It's like you WANT the Switch to fail.
That's because he does want it to fail. Still very upset that the Wii U was killed off
So, I know this game is further out than DOOM which is where all the hype is at right now, and maybe this is a little bit less popular... but let me nip that in the bud right now because I played Wolfenstein The New Order. It's one of the best FPS games I have played all generation. When I bought it I was just curious because they were bringing the series back with a reboot of sorts. But once I started playing I was shocked at how good the game was. And it's a terrific single player experience, which is perfect for the Switch.
The only reason I wasn't really excited for this sequel before now (though I should mention I was planning to buy it still) is because my interest in other consoles has really dwindled post-Switch. It's not that I wasn't excited for the game it's just that I wasn't excited for the systems it was releasing on. But hooooly crap am I hyped now!
I think people should really give this game the attention they are giving DOOM, because imo it's going to be every bit as good. Some will probably even prefer it.

@JaxonH I think Wolfenstein will get more attention once its arrival is more imminent. For now, DOOM is on the immediate horizon, and that is where people's attention should be focused for the moment.
Wolfenstein: The New Order had more setpieces and dialogue than I cared for, but it was a really solid FPS, so I'm looking forward to the sequel. Surprised they're not releasing The New Order first, though!
@Ralizah
I get it. My anticipation for DOOM is reaching fever pitch as the reality of playing it on Switch within the next 60-90 days is setting in.
But I really liked the story campaign for Wolfenstein. I remember the difficulty settings, and if you chose the easiest setting it showed dude with a bonnet and pacifier in his mouth lol... gosh that game was a hoot... And a blast
But ya DOOM is the now, Wolfenstein 2 is the later... but it's still got me excited to see it running on Switch.

...Why would you play an FPS if not for the set pieces and cutscenes? Without those it would literally be just a game about walking around and pointing a reticule at enemies and clicking the trigger, and there are thousands of those.
I'm way more excited for Wolfenstein than Doom, but I assume the later has some fun set pieces like any good shooter in place of Wolf's more considered approach.
Set-pieces are fine for boss fights and bigger encounters, but the best FPSers lend themselves to more naturalistic, free-flowing gameplay. In the case of DOOM, this is married to intricate level design, tight controls, and twitchy combat that makes for a continually intense and engaging experience.
This laser focus on gameplay is what makes DOOM so great. It's EXACTLY like a 90's FPS, but with modern polish and production values.
Nintendo fans tend to favour some game genres over others, as can be seen in the sales figures. The only thing vaguely like a FPS that has done well has been Metroid Prime really.
