Topic: Will the Nintendo Switch's Online Service include SNES games after post launch in the future?

When I first learned about the Nintendo Switch's Online Service, I am eager to try it out. I am saving my Nintendo eShop funds to buy a subscription for one year. So I am wondering if the Nintendo Switch's Online Service will include SNES games as well as GBA and Gamecube games in the near future once it launches.

We don't know yet but we can probably take a safe bet that we will see some titles from past Nintendo platforms in the future. I hope so anyway.

I think it's a reasonably safe bet that it'll at least have SNES titles at some point. Though really we don't know anything beyond the announced games. Equally we don't know whether or not these titles will be available outside of the subscription. People have just assumed that this is how Nintendo are going to handle classic games on the Switch entirely. They have also assumed that Nintendo online will only ever give us classic games.

They may be right but, equally, it could work completely differently than the way people are assuming. For all we know Nintendo's online subscription is the way to get free access to these titles. Maybe they still sell them on the eShop. Also maybe as part of the subscription they give us new games also occasionally along the lines of Dr Luigi, Pushmo etc. Really, we don't have much of an idea of what's going to happen.

I'm hoping for more than NES and SNES games.

I need a portable version of Eternal Darkness.

@skywake I mean, our 'assumptions' are based directly off of what Nintendo has said. To argue otherwise is assuming that Nintendo is not meaning what they are saying.

Literally all we know for certain is this:
"Enjoy a selection of NES games with added online play for the first time ever as part of your paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The service will launch with 20 games, with new games added regularly."

Now it's always a good idea to set your expectations low and be surprised than the other way around. Even so, none of this is really set in stone. Nothing they have said excludes the possibility of these games being available separate from the subscription. Infact they already sell classic games on the eShop so that's, in a sense, already happening. And with "new games added regularly" I think it's fair to say that it may not necessarily be limited to NES games or even "classic" games.

And remember the 3DS VC launched as a platform for Gameboy games before expanding to NES and then SNES games. The Wii U VC launched as NES, SNES and N64 before expanding to GBA, Wii and DS. Via Club Nintendo and My Nintendo they have previously given out things like Twilight Princess Picross and Doc Loius Punchout. So while I am not assuming it I also wouldn't be surprised if this expands beyond NES one way or another.

In five years we may look back on this and not think of this part of Nintendo online as being just NES games or even just classic games. Equally we may look back at classic games on the Switch and not automatically have to talk about their online service. This incredibly tight link between classic games on Switch and Nintendo online might well end up just being an assumption on our part.

After post future...? That seems a long way off.

I think it'll be gradual like Wii U VC but with the debut only being NES. Wii U's approach for VC (1st party consoles) was:
April 2013 - NES and SNES
April 2014 - GBA
January 2015 - Wii
April 2015 - N64 and DS

Given the Classic Mini series, I see Nintendo Switch Online being something like:
September 2018 - NES
September 2019 - SNES
September 2020 - N64

@skywake That's far from the only thing that Nintendo has officially stated on the matter. Nintendo has responded to the controversy regarding the lack of Virtual Console once or twice. For example, Reggie recently stated this:

"The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online, right? With the mentality that says we’re going to be offering a slate of games, and it’s a slate that’s going to increase over time. For many of these games, there’s going to be additional online capability provided in those games. That’s the vision we have for how to best bring our legacy content to Nintendo Switch."

I mean, obviously it's still not completely directly stated, but it shouldn't have to be in this case. It's obvious what Nintendo is meaning. Reggie is stating pretty clearly here that the online service is the Switch's Virtual Console. There's a pretty darn good reason that we're thinking there will be no individual purchase alternative - it's what they have stated.

I still don't think it's that black and white. I mean the eShop literally has classic games already for sale under the "Arcade Archives" banner. On previous consoles those would have been called Virtual Console games. Same deal with the NES and SNES Mini. So while the VC as the single way to get classic Nintendo games is clearly gone I don't think Nintendo Online is their entire plan as a successor here. Equally I don't think Nintendo Online will always and only offer classic games as the carrot for subscription.

Really hope we see classic games on the eshop outside of the subscription but if not I will happily buy up the Sega Ages releases and ACA Neo Geo titles for my retro thrills.

Would rather GameCube games received physical remasters than a budget eshop re-release. FZero GX, Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker and Wave Race: Blue Storm seem like easy wins to me.

wouldn't be all surprise. it's was the original plan after all, than things change afterwards.

But why discontinue the virtual console? Was it not profitable for Nintendo?
