Topic: Which Zelda Switch Ports are Likely?

Since historically there is usually a new Zelda release every two years, and this year is the remake of Link's Awakening, I'm thinking the next release will be a brand-new Zelda. I think it's likely that some other Zeldas will be directly ported to Switch (not remade/remastered like LA). However I'm just not sure which ones. I'm going through a phase where I want to play all the Zeldas in the timeline order, however I'm hesitant to buy any new ones for a ~$40 price, only to have them ported to Switch months later (on a budget). So, which Zeldas do you think are likely candidates? I am personally thinking Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. I am also hoping for Minish Cap, but do not think it is as likely.

Another question (not sure if I should make another thread): To anyone who's played the original 2 Zeldas on 3DS VC and/or through NSO, which is better? I plan on getting NSO anyway but was just wondering if the games play better on 3DS or not.

hopefully no more.
it'd be nice to see any kind of new Zelda project next.

Hopefully at least the two hd ones from the WiiU.

It's nice to have easy access to classic games, specially on a handheld console.

I didn't mean in place of a new Zelda game. Like I said, I think we'll get a brand new Zelda in 2021. I was saying I think they'll port some old ones onto Switch in the meantime to tide us over, especially as Wii U and 3DS become even deader than they are now.

I really, really hope that they put virtual console on Switch. However, with the NSO exclusive NES games, I get more and more convinced that if they did put VC on Switch it would be NSO-only. Sure it'd be cheaper, but you wouldn't get to choose which games and wouldn't get to organize them.

I'll split my thoughts into 2 parts, NSO and remasters/remakes. This is considering the whole Switch lifespan so like for example I don't think SNES is coming to NSO until at least September 2019:

NSO - All the Wii U VC Zelda games except Skyward Sword, Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass

Remasters/remakes - Link's Awakening, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Skyward Sword HD

I think Wand of Gamelon is next.

But I’d guess Windwaker or Skyward Sword. Windwaker would be closer to the vibrant of are the Awakening remaster, and Skyward would be similar in scope to BotW. I loved TP, but it feels like the ‘dark’ adventures have taken a back seat.

Remastering the Original The Legends of Zelda in the style of Link's Awakening would be neat. (correct me if i'm wrong.) But, i never seen that game being remade at all.. it would be an interesting take to seeing that in a fresh new look and ideas. (like adding coop for it!)
I Mean.. why not? just add a few new things and you have a Perfect Remake for the Original Legends of Zelda.

I think of all of them Skyward Sword is the most likely it's the only 3D release that hasn't had a remake/remaster. Also the Wii U remakes are easy wins given they're already done and the Switch is already well over double the Wii U's install base. I think all three of them are very, very likely to land on the Switch eventually.

When you go beyond that it gets a bit trickier. Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time would have to be basically done again if they were to come to Switch. The 3DS remasters won't immediately translate over to a HD console. The 3DS remasters also sold well and are pretty fresh in people's minds so doing a HD remaster would have a limited impact compared to other options. I think these two are the least likely.

With the DS Zeldas I think these games are built a little bit too much around the DS to make sense. To the extent that they are interesting, and I do love both of them, it's because of the way they play on DS. People complained about it at the time but IMO the stylus controlled Zelda was fantastic. Take that away? I don't think these games are anywhere near as interesting. IMO stylus control is far more critical to the DS Zelda's than motion control was for Skyward Sword.

Then there's this third batch of titles, the non-DS 2D Zelda games. A Link to the Past has kinda been revisited already on 3DS, I don't think them going back to it again would be as interesting the second time. I also think that Zelda 2 is straight up not going to happen, it's just too different to revisit. The original Zelda could be interesting I think. Regardless, of all of these earlier 2D Zeldas Link's Awakening was the most obvious pick and they're going down that road. And along those lines Oracle of Seasons/Ages could also be interesting to revisit I think. But of all of these I'd put a HD remaster of Minish Cap second to Link's Awakening.

Basically.....
Pretty much inevitable: Skyward Sword HD, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD
Obvious next choice: Minish Cap
Would be interesting but not the obvious pick: Oracle of Seasons/Ages, The Legend of Zelda
Would be interesting but I think is unlikely: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, A Link to the Past
Not sold on the idea of: Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
Not happening: Zelda 2

Both do a perfectly fine job of NES emulation. If I was to make a comment it would be that the Switch's screen is generally quite a bit nicer than the 3DS. Also, obviously, the Switch you can play the games on your TV. But beyond this when you have access to the same NES content on both they're just NES games, nothing particularly good or bad with one vs the other IMO.

Of course when you bring up the Switch online's classic games on this forum and inevitably someone's going to talk about what games it has or have some moral objection to subscriptions. But in terms of how good the emulation is? It's about as good as you could ask for, which is more than I could say for the Wii U VC.

For the Trolls whom whine about Zelda series you clearly don't have the passion for such games. And the latest remake clearly shows you don't know what your talking about.

I’d like Skyward sword HD

The Wii U remasters seem like no-brainers. Just release WWHD/TPHD in a dual-pack set for the Switch, and I'd happily buy in again.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

Part of me thinks they'll release a dual pack cartridge or drop an eshop exclusive dual pack of oot and mm, I think they would sell more than minish cap or the Oracle games( not saying the n64 games are better I'm saying i think theyll sell better imo.. Nintendo knows people have a soft spot for ocarina of time. It's been released in some form on every system (console) since its release on 64 including a remaster on 3ds.

I think playing on 3ds is better due to the dpad on 3ds. It's pretty tough to play through the original on switch with analog sticks or the directional buttons. I got through it but it just felt off.

But yea I do think a skyward sword remaster is happening at some point too

Tried Phantom Hourglass once and couldn’t get on with the repeated trips to the same temple over and over. Will have to give it another go at some stage because i never tried Spirit Tracks because of it.

I loved phantom hourglass with the exception of the temple of ocean king. If you liked the gameplay of PH youll like spirit tracks. Spirit tracks in a sense has you going back to 1 tower like phantom hourglass does but it doesn't make you replay the same part over and over again. You go back to the same tower but you skip right to the next floor.. I love the puzzles and mechanics of the ds zelda games. Only problem is my digital copy of spirit tracks froze when I was 8 hours into the game and i never did in game saves. So I'm forced to restart the entire game and see if I can progress. I was loving what i played though

I would think Skyward Sword would be the most likely candidate out of the 3D Zelda games. There have been rumors alluding to it for awhile. I like tend to like the game a lot better than most, but I'd still rate it as my least favorite 3D Zelda game. It's by no means a bad game and IMO is worth a play for anyone who likes action/adventure games. Some of its flaws are overblown but could nonetheless be dealt with in a remaster.

On my personal wish list? I'd kind of like to see Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask get the HD treatment, but I don't think that'll happen for some time yet since they were remade for the 3DS not too long ago. If Nintendo is going down this route with Link's Awakening though....I wonder if the Oracle games will be next?

This. The highlighted part is one of the main reasons why I prefer Spirit Tracks over Phantom Hourglass. I also actually liked the train travel mechanics, but I'm kind of biased towards trains in general. The Spirit Flute tunes were decent too, but I do admit that actually playing the thing can be a pain sometimes.
