@GrailUK Don't get me wrong. I love the Switch. But in its second year we've already seen some third-party cold feet, some mediocre ports and, in general, some things that make clear the console is a little underpowered. With that in mind, of course, they're going to launch a new Switch at some point, but what I'm afraid is we early adopters are going to be left behind. Of course we can sell our Switch and buy a new model (after adding money, it is), but I wish we shouldn't have to do that in a current generation.

@Moroboshi876 I'm all for it. The moment a more powerful Switch is available, I'll adopt that early too! Now the question of under powered is a really fascinating one for me. If you can't make a good game on ANY system (and people are still making good games on the humble C64), then the only thing under powered is the maker's imagination and creativity. The only thing 'power' (lol ridiculous) has any bearing on is graficks. One could argue AI or it's mechanics like physics too, however a game relying on that doesn't need to rest on it's looks as a game if it's good enough.

As gaming becomes more popular, it is attracting more people that want games to be like TV and film. Actors playing characters in games instead of fictional creations. Power affects how much a footballer looks like Ronaldo. Power affects how man blades of grass are on a field. Power...doesn't really enhance gameplay. People that didn't play games before because it wasn't on par with Hollywood. They are certainly sapping challenge out of games. But seriously, anyone moaning about power, they would not have played games in the 80s. They would consider people like me a nerd! Sony changed the demographic with PS1 bringing so much pop culture and FMV to the media. Gah, this isn't the thread.

*Edit, hope that doesn't read like moaning lol. Just observing how the gaming audience has changed and divided etc.

**Edit: Mechanics to me are how the game works / moves. Gameplay mechanisms are the processes the game asks you to do. Collecting stuff or double jumping etc. (I think some people are bashful about words ending in -ism lol)

@GrailUK Well, I was referring more to the fact some games from previous generations don't work as well in the Switch as one could expect. Super Mario Odyssey is amazing, no complaints about that.

Personally I don't think real life like graphics is the future. The moment video games start to look like films, they'll be interactive films, and that hasn't worked well in the past.

So don't think I'm a moaning teenager, I'm old school too. I'm just bothered in Year 2 we can see Switch's limitations so clearly. Not with first-party current-gen, I insist. With other things.

But this VR thing is a nice attempt, only a little underpowered (don't you agree with that at least?), so leaves to be desired.

@Moroboshi876 I'm still into 8x8 pixels and triangles man. If a game doesn't work, it's down to the devs trying to do too much because of anxiety about perception of their game, instead of making it work. But to put your mind at rest, I totally understand where you are coming from It's just not a concern for me. If a game is naff, then I move on.

I want Mario Kart VR, enough said.

Own up to Joy-Con Drift, Nintendo. We all know it's your fault

Xenoblade 2 would be cool but impossible since the Switch can barely run the game in handheld.

I suppose this means the next Nintendo will go hard at VR.

@Trajan Be still my heart. Xenoblade VR would be lush.

Yeah, with how low the resolution already is with portable XC2, a VR mode would be a smear. The best you could hope for would be a completely seperate mode that would run at native res, such as a Character/Blade viewer/gallery that wouldn't have much else going on.

I'm not even sure a MK8D mode would work well, due to the speed of things & the low res while in VR. Even the blaster game moved at a pretty chill pace.

I have a feeling that Labo VR, and the support for it in other games, is really just Nintendo testing how well their own games, and the Switch hardware, work in VR. In theory the Switch is the perfect system for VR; you wouldn't need to buy a new screen or controllers to use it, you could just slot the Switch itself into a headset and use detached Joy-Cons. The only real problem is that the Switch is not powerful enough to display high-res VR images that are comfortable to look at for a long time. (At least that's the impression I get, although I don't actually have a Labo VR headset yet.) So I think if they eventually release a more powerful Switch 2 it will have a more robust VR peripheral with a strap. I don't want it to become Nintendo's top priority and have it replace more conventional games, but they could easily have the most affordable VR system on the market next generation.

@Dogorilla, it's not just that the Switch has a lower resolution, but also the fact that it has no external head tracking.

With the Switch's brand of VR, you're limited to looking around from a fixed point, while on other platforms, you have a bit of a virtual space you can move around in. With, let's say Smash Bros, if you had head tracking, in addition to the front row view of the action you currently have now, you'd actually be able to get a closer view of the arena by physically moving your head closer to the arena (as in, forward). You could even get a close up look at a character by simply getting in close, like the arena is some sort of animated shelf and you're walking up to closely examine a figure.

A lot, and I'd say most, VR games on other platforms are designed with this capability in mind (to get a good look behind that rock, you may have to lean forward, which isn't possible on LABO VR, and then look left, which is possible with LABO VR, to see what's behind it), and either couldn't work on Switch, or would have to be gimped.

I'm not really sure if it's possible, or feasible, to get such functionality without an external camera(s). The newly released Oculus Quest might do this (it's completely wireless, and I believe creates a virtual space by scanning the dimensions of a room itself, but it's also $400, so probably not tech that Nintendo would be looking into anytime in the near future.

@RR529 Ah, I didn't think of that. A potential Switch 2 could have an external camera though.
