I seriously believe it's a new Metroid prime. It's a needed franchise to Nintendo and I think federation force on the 3DS is stop gap until prime gets here.
Obviously donkey Kong is a possibility too so who knows it could be a double rare whammy coming
I can't remember if they said they were working on a new ip or not so that could also be a possibility.
But Metroid for launch is the main desire for Nintendo.
@DjLewe78: I do think they did say that there weren't working on a Metriod game but If they were to make a metriod game I would love to see a reamp of the 2D platformer kind. I don't think they said it was a new IP of such but something that they pitched Nintendo.
@DjLewe78: No Metroid. At least not Metroid Prime. People need to get that idea out of their heads. Retro worked on Metroid Prime before, but most of the staff that worked on those games are long gone and no longer with Retro Studios. Their chances of working on a Metroid Prime title are about just as big as any other division of Nintendo.
We have some rumours regarding Retro Studios; Kensuke Tanabe, producer of the Metroid Prime series, is apparantly no longer supervisor at Retro Studios. Don't know if this happened before or after he announced that Retro is working on a new game, and I don't know how much that would've affected their new game's development. They're probably working on something other than DK or Metroid, since Nintendo apparantly greenlit a project they pitched themselves. Could be a new IP, could be another entry in an established Nintendo franchise, nobody knows.
On what they're working on.. I could be anything really. They have experience with 2D games, but I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to challenge themselves with a bigger scale 3D game. They've been hiring a lot of people in the last few years, including staff from Naughty Dog and Vigil games (the former responsible for Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted and the Last of Us and the latter responsible for Darksiders). So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if we got another solid 2D platformer, but it's certainly possible that we're getting something completely different.
@Octane: cheers for that info. I read a rumour that it was Diddy Kong Racing 2 (which I would loves to pieces) but i just don't see this happening. I would love to see a New IP or just a 3D platform

From what I remember of that rumour Monster Games (who did the Excite racing games on the Wii and the Xenoblade 3DS port) were working on it with input from Retro, it was gonna be Donkey Kong Racing rather than Diddy Kong Racing 2. Apparently it got greenlit after Ninty saw Donkey Kong Country Returns and Mario Kart Wii sell in huge numbers.
@arronishere: I would be happy with DKR as long as they have aventure mode and throw in a few new character and make a real unique roster, I really dont like how Mario kart has gone now with it character list it feels more like smash kart now and I feel that's where the future is headed for that franchise
I think the main thing about it was instead of karts (like in Diddy Kong Racing) you had animals instead. I think it got canned or put on the backburner when the DS version of Diddy flopped.
@haigh1011: I wouldn't call adding 3 non-Mario series characters (Link, Isabelle, Villager) moving in a Smash Kart direction. That kind of thing has been happening to Mario Kart ever since 2005 with the inclusion of Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Blinky. Something much more worthy of being concerned about is the Mario and Peach clones (Pink Gold Peach, Metal Mario, Cat Peach, Tanooki Mario) and the pointless babies (Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina) over characters like Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr., King Boo, Petey Piranha, etc.
@Grumblevolcano: That's all they have got for now, what are they going for MK9 and with everyone wanting more DLC they will star adding other pointless characters, but I also agree with what youare saying about the mario characters and babies
@haigh1011: Just because people want more DLC doesn't mean it's going to happen. Look at Paper Mario for example, people wanted a Paper Mario game in the same style as TTYD and instead we got a Paper Mario in the same style as Sticker Star which is exactly what people didn't want. The same argument can be applied to Metroid and Federation Force.
@Grumblevolcano: well we can't really judge paper mario yet as we haven't really seen enough of the actual gameplay, as for metroid the dislike only came after the game was made so there's not really much they can do about that
It will be a new IP and most likely, and I hope that it is one that is aimed at a more mature audience. Nintendo need more games that fit that bill for when the NX launches.
