@Aozz101x Forget Nikkei. We predicted that here in 2017!

Edit: Interesting about "service for those willing to pay more." Am I to assume this means SNES and above games will be a "premium" service? I can't imagine it's much more than that.

Hmm, right after they said they weren't considering another model.

I do worry a bit about the premium service, I don't imagine reception will be very warm if people have to pay more on top of the NSO for other classic games.

Aimed at gaming enthusiasts have me curious... It could mean a service like ea access. (Or a rebate system, which sounds more Nintendo)

Youd say that paying more for more would be hated but...

Look at Xbox and PS. They have at least two subscription models per.

Theoretically a vita form factor could retain compatibility with the joy con via Bluetooth.

That said, I think that messing with handheld or home only SKUs would muddle the Switch's messaging and I'm not in favour of it.

Currently playing: Octopath Traveler (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Pokemon HeartGold (DS), Pokemon Platinum (DS).

@Buizel That's my view as well, but I expect it simply because that seems to be a very Nintendo thing to do, lol

We had 2ds and 3ds. Most manufacturers in android release like 20 phones a year. We will be fine. Stop obssessing over it making sense with the name or not.

Sorry, but comparing the cell phone market to the video game market isn't very well suited.
We had 2ds come about because 3ds sales kept lagging and 3d functionality wasn't well utilized overall. there simply wasnt enough of a price/value over the existing DSi/Lite for consumers. Considering that the Switch continues to move units and software, what really would be the point of a smaller unit with less features?

I can't really agree with you:
A supossed Tegra X1 chip built with 10 nm technology would in fact generate less heat and consume less power, but:
-The difference would not be enough for allowing to reduce the size of the batery in a noticeable amount. Remember that there are several other components consuming power, for example the screens are always responsable fro a high percentage of portable devices power consumption. Nintendo could look for a less power hungry screen, OLED technology for example, but it would be more expensive.
-The fan is already quite small, the limiting factor here is that you need to leave free space for the air to move out of the device.
-And last but not least: as far as I know, Tegra X1 is currently only available on 20 nm technology. It is a SOC that already is some years old, and I wouldn't expect Nvidia to do again all the layout and screening process and spend all the money that would be needed for manufacturing the SOC under a new technology. Even if they do, the result would be a more expensive SOC, as 10 nm manufactuing process is more expensive than 20 nm.

So, although I agree with you on the idea that Nintendo is going to release a new version of the Switch, that will be handheld only, I don't think that the main factor regarding size reduction of the device will be the manufacturing technology of the SOC.

1. Of course I also meant such a device would have a smaller screen, probably 5" like the PS Vita.

2. Nintendo is working closely with Nvidia now that the Switch is successful. You have to remember that the Tegra line of chips was a failure before the Switch. It was supposed to be used in higher performance tablets and set top boxes like the Shield, but it never took off. Now that the Nintendo Switch is successful, Nvidia will be very willing to either provide a shrunk down X1 chip for a Switch Slim, or a higher performing chip for a Switch Pro.

3. The 10 nm process if of course more expensive, but it also becomes cheaper with time. A reasonable time span might be that in late 2020 we will see either a Switch Slim or a Switch Pro. I'm guessing it will depend on what the competition is doing. If Sony release PS5 in 2020 Nintendo probably don't want to be left behind, and will release a next gen Switch Pro.

@Therad I'm not sure Ninty would want to move to a subscription model like access for their retail games. They're too conservative for a shakeup of the core business model than that. They won't interfere with their retail numbers. Rebates maybe... But I can't imagine them doing anything that tampers with the currently working retail model for current gen games.

@Knuckles-Fajita I suppose it could be a streaming service - in Japan only. Since they've messed with that with both Capcom and Ubi.

@JackEatsSparrows 2DS was made for one reason only: Pokemon. 3DS was too expensive and "fragile" for the traditional Pokemon market used to cheap consoles per kid. There's a new Pokemon this year............

I can't really get behind a smaller screen though. For 1080p designed UI's switch screen is already too small for text, or barely too small. Any smaller and text will be unreadable in a number of games. It would work with a high DPI display, but...that means much more powerful GPU. And flexible displays aren't where I thought they'd be by now.

Therad

@NEStalgia yeah it doesn't sound like Nintendo. But I don't have a better guess at the moment.

I stick with my prediction that they will release a non-switch handheld. This is the easiest way to lower price.

JackEatsSparrows

@NEStalgia Whatever, old man! Your bifocals are too fragile for Pokeymans!

I dunno, I guess I just really don't see a reason this year for Ninty to add another SKU. the only hardware this to revise over the current without an increase in cost would be bluetooth audio channels. But, the thing is still selling. like illicit cakes.

I dont see what the big deal is if theres a handheld variant. Nintendo wouldnt do it if they didnt think it was viable. It will have its own market. We can think what we want but they are the multibillion dollar company, not us.

@JackEatsSparrows LOL. Someone's never played Titan Quest, Skyrim, or L.A. Noire on Switch handheld?

Ohhh...I like illicit cakes....wait what?

It sells well, but GameFreak needs their market base for each sibling getting their own copy, etc. A $300 console won't do that. Plus the Switch, while robust (it survived me!!) isn't quite child-proff as much as a stock 3DS which was apparently not child-proof enough as it was, warranting 2DS. I don't think mini-switch will be a fragile iphone consumer electrical goody. I think it's a ruggedized child proof, smaller unit that will also appeal to 3DS lovers.

We currently have 2 switches and I've said it many times before, if they came out with a handheld only version with no dock fixed joycons at around $200 I'd probably sell one of ours and buy 2 for my kids in a heartbeat. Unless we are playing smash or Mario Kart or something multiplayer like that I'd say 90% of the time they are played in handheld mode. Makes plenty of sense to me, we shall see though.

@NEStalgia I've got LA Noire (for the second system, tee hee).

I'm kinda surprised. I figured they'd stick with a pro version only and discount the original.

But at the same time, a smaller, more durable, cheaper Switch makes sense for selling multiple units per household for kids. Curious to see if they sacrifice the ability to switch, or detachable joycons, or if they just make the base unit smaller
