I was talking to my friend yesterday who's visiting from Tokyo. He works at a game Studio, and he was telling me about the game that they're working on, which will be published by Nintendo. I'm not supposed to tell anyone about it, but I'm being bad. At-least I'm not posting his name, as I don't want him to get in trouble.

The game is a Legend of Zelda spin-off which is like a hybrid of badminton volleyball & dodgeball, which can be played multiplayer. The proposed English title is "Hyrule Breakneck Badminton". I find this interesting because while Mario has had many multiplayer-oriented spin-offs such as Mario Kart, Mario Gold, Mario Tennis, and other Sports games, The Legend of Zelda has never gotten the same treatment, having few spin-offs.He said that they're likely to incorporate some ideas from the Mario sports games. Unlike real badminton or volleyball, the goal is to make make the ball hit the other player (hence the "dodgeball" part).

Some characters like Link use tools such as swords as rackets to hit the ball (like badminton), while others like Darunia bump it like in volleyball. Ganondorf and Zelda hit with their hands, but they are assisted by magic.

I guess that Zelda hasn't had the spin-off treatment earlier like Mario because it's hard to find a scenario that works with Legend of Zelda characters. Mario games are less about story, so it's acceptable to have Mario go-karting with Bowser, which wouldn't feel right between Link & Ganondorf. For this reason, I don't expect Ganondorf to be added to Mario Kart. But Breakneck Badminton is an idea that can actually work. It's not like Link & Ganondorf have never had a badminton match before. (remember Ocarina of Time?)
