@JDORS I would recommend Fox for Diddy Kong, as he moves and attacks faster than DK while also having great defense against the peanut gun and the jump attack. For Palutena, Bayonetta has enough close and long ranged attacks that can pentrate Palutena’s defenses. Zelda is also a pretty even match against Palutena.

@JayJ You really need to level up the primary spirits to 99 in order to win.

@rjejr : Unfortunately, amiibo only transfer to a maximum level of 12. It was quite annoying having to wipe all of my amiibo to what virtually amounts to zero anyway. Moves also cannot be customised either, which feels like a step back when compared to the previous instalments.

Unlike Smash 3DS/Wii U, amiibo fighters will still level up even if you have an all amiibo match, so you can grind them all without having to actually do anything.

Certain other amiibo will also unlock spirits early, such as the non-Link/Zelda BotW amiibo, the Animal Crossing series, and even Qbby from BoxBoy. These can only be used once. Other amiibo, such as the Dark Souls amiibo, and most amiibo cards, won't do anything at all, and a very small number of amiibo (only the Odyssey series springs to mind) will unlock a spirit and can also be used as a fighter. Oddly, Detective Pikachu only unlocks the spirit and cannot be used as an amiibo fighter (which especially sucks as the Detective Pikachu games does not contain any read/write functionality anyway, so it could have been put to use in Smash).

@PolarExperience Oh I did that already, and it makes the game a lot easier, as does having the right spirit to take away the effects of brutal conditions, but even then there is a number of challenges that are just ridiculously hard.

@JayJ Yeah, I haven’t progressed too much in WoL, but the giant Dedede in the Marth pathway almost made me quit (I’m only in normal mode).

This is the fastest way to unlock fighters (from the home screen):

1. Smash
2. Smash
3. Change to Stock 1
4. Begin fight and then immediately kill yourself.
5. A new challenger approaches. Beat it to unlock it.
6. After the match is complete exit to your Switch home screen and quite the game.
7. Fire it back up and repeat these steps to do it again.

I handed the Switch off to the kids today and let them go at it for a while and they got a bunch unlocked for me. We're down to only needing 17 more.

This is legit parenting right here.

57 fighters unlocked! And I'm happy to say that I've unlocked all the ones that I truly care about. I may intentionally never unlock the Mii fighters. I've never liked them in the game and they feel out of place showing up on Switch.

Diddy Kong was giving me fits, but then in one rematch all I did was hit him twice and he then turned and jumped off the platform and KO'ed himself. I've never seen THAT happen before.

On another note, am I the only one who was underwhelmed when they announced the Joker as a DLC fighter? I've never heard of this character or the game that he's from, and they didn't even show him fighting in Smash (which is what they usually do during a reveal), so I have know idea what he'll be like. That had to be the worst Smash reveal ever.

If there's one DLC fighter we absolutely have to have, it's Lara Croft. In the ultimate video game crossover, if you're going to have all the icons present, then how can you not have Lara Croft? I also would love to see Crash Bandikoot, Conker, Chun-Li, Shantae and Shovel Knight, but Shovel Knight already appears in the game as a supporting character so that means we won't see him as a fighter. And Chun-Li is a spirit.

Worse than Inkling? Although the Inkling reveal did reveal the game to us, no footage was shown or anything and there were long, frustrating arguments on this forum for three months about whether Ultimate would be a new game or enhanced port. It was obviously the former, but that little bit of uncertainty led us to having to suffer that argument for months.

At least we can't say the same about Joker's reveal. It's a harmless teaser.

I really enjoyed Persona 5, but I know it's not for everyone, so I'm not going to try to push it on you.

@JDORS i think the mii fighters appear as soon as you create some (which is one of the challenge achievements). They're also absent from almost all game modes except basic smash so you should be good

Marioman64

JDORS

@Harmonie Well, with Inkling I was familiar with the character and so it was easy to imagine what the character would be like in the game. I'm sure many people like me were not familiar with Joker and thus had no idea what kind of fighter he would be, so showing his fighting moves would have made a better overall impression, IMHO.

@JDORS Many people that like JRPGs know who he is. Shin Megami Tensei/Persona is a really popular series in Japan and has a cult following in the West, as well.

@Agriculture Oh it can always be worse. 😉. I just wanted to point out Nintendo is expecting to make more money on this game. Besides the season pass there's also the online subscription money, and $1000 worth of amiibo. I know thats most games these days, but God of War winning GotY shows it can be done without it. I'm 135 hours into DQXI and that was one-and-done as well.

@PolarExperience Thanks for that, but every game on Wii U worked that way as well, except SSB4. I'm just looking for confirmation, it's a long 2 weeks until Christmas. And it would be nice if the dlc was available stand alone but no sign og Joker on the eShop, just the bundle so far. BotW never got stand alone, SSBU might not either.

@rjejr I think the separate DLC is available when that character has been released. They featured it being standalone in the last Smash Direct.

@Silly_G Thanks for all of that. 12 is a random number out of 50, very Nintendo. They might as well just have wiped them at that point, I watched my kids level a few of them up to 12 in about 15 minutes on Wii U. Would you happen to know if the Miifighter amiibo can be costumed and keep the costume in memory? I bought the 3 pack for $7.50 during the Toys R Us bankruptcy and they are still in the box. I also bought 7 or 8 Animal Crossing amiibo to play the worst game ever made amiibo Festival, good to know I can maybe at least get something out of them. Thanks again.

@PolarExperience OH thanks, guess I need to go re-watch the ND then. I know I watched it all live but it was a bit much and I kinda zoned out. 😁

The amiibo thing is in my opinion the worst. I am not interesting in buying figurines, and because of that some content in Breath of the Wild wasn't available to me, such as the wolf.

Sisilly_G

@rjejr : The Mii Fighter amiibo have always been able to store a Mii of your choice (they can't be used as generic Mii fighters anyway, to my knowledge) and these Mii will also migrate from 3DS/Wii U to Switch.

I hadn't used them in so long that I wasn't even sure which Miis I had stored on mine until I was transferring them to Switch.

I hate the notion of unlocking characters as well. Some people want to be "rewarded" (as stupid as this rationale is) with a gradual sense of progression, but I find the whole process needlessly frustrating and arbitrary.

I agree. This notion that players have to exhibit a certain degree of skill in order to access the entire game has always left a bad taste in my mouth. It feels more punishing than rewarding, and the fact that it's in Smash for Switch is making me reconsider if I want to purchase it.

I think Mario Kart 8 on Switch did it perfectly: all tracks and characters are available from the start, and you unlock car components by collecting coins, which you do naturally as you play anyway; furthermore, you still unlock components even if you come in dead last in every race, so it's never a source of frustration.

I get that some folks don’t like the idea of unlocking fighters, but that’s sort of a staple to the series. It’d be like starting BotW with all the outfits maxed out. It also encourages folks to try out more characters, which does teach you a lot more than just playing a mainfrom start to infinity
