You can always play as Kirby if a certain character is too difficult, I'm terrible and even I find Kirby an easy character

@Agriculture You don't need to lock away 70 out of 80 fighters to make it have broad appeal. It's cheap way to extend single player content. It would have the same broad appeal even if all of the fighters were unlocked. I don't mind unlocking a few fighters, but unlocking the entire roster is mildly annoying.

That's where you're wrong kiddo! With modern gaming most people who play need a reward every few minutes to keep playing. That's just the way it is. Look at it from the bright side, the game doesn't have microtransactions.

@JDORS Do you have either of the Belmonts (Simon or Richter)? Both of them have great range and power that can destroy fighters from short to long range, especially with their Smash Attacks.

@PolarExperience I did eventually somehow manage to beat Simon using Zero Suit Samus. I was very surprised as beating Simon at first seemed impossible.

I've got 43 fighters unlocked so far, so I'm making progress.

Anybody want to do an old man a favor and boot up the game under a different account on the same Switch - we have the game but it's waiting until Christmas to be opened - and see if it starts a new clean save file for it, or like on the Wii U version of SSB4 all of the characters unlocked under one account are unlocked under all the accounts? I don't know why it did that on Wii U, but it did. It was very frustrating to play the game for the first time a week after it released and have all of the characters unlocked on my sons account also unlocked on mine. And all of the challenges as well. I never played it I was so disgusted. Plus no Subspace Emissary type single player mode. Plus $100 worth of DLC. I actually own amiibo for characters - Bayonetta and Cloud - we've never unlocked in game.

And since I'm here - anybody play with amibo yet? I don't suppose the amiibo we have - about 20 - will unlock their in game counterparts? Wouldn't want all of that money we spent buying amiibo put to good use.

Also, will the amiibo we have leveled up to 50 carry over that 50 into the game or will we need to wipe the data to start over? 20 amiibo at level 50, would hate to see them all wiped clean and have to start over. We still have a few at 0 we can level up.

I was going to start a new SSBU amiibo thread but there were already about 5 SSBU threads so I decided to just jump in here, in hopes the amiibo do help unlock them. If you guys want me gone w/ the amiibo nonsense just say so and I'll start a new amiibo-centric forum, no offense taken.

@Agriculture "the game doesn't have microtransactions."

No, it has a $25 MACROtransaction.

70 fighters + 100 stages = $60 / 170 = 35c each fighter and stage, plus World of Light and everything else
5 fighters + 5 stages = $25 /10 = $2.50 each fighter and stage with not much else

Not trying to start a fight, just being complete. Nintendo is probably planning on selling that $25 DLC to at least half the people who buy SSBU, if not more. Have they announced if we can buy them 1 at a time yet so we can only spend $6 instead of $25? That would kind of be a microtransaction. And I'd prefer to have both options, even if most people would choose $25 some may only want 1 fighter and stage for $6.

@rjejr Almost positive that using a diff account creates a new, clean save file, as that’s what it does with all other Switch games.
You can buy fighters separately, the Fighters Pass is just a bundled option.

I meant those mobile game microtransactions where you need to pay for every use. I'm just saying it could've been worse than a little grindy character unlock. I've got 62 characters unlocked just from playing today and yesterday.

Yeah, I've unlocked around half of the roster and have been beat by like seven fighters. Thankfully I discovered the refight challengers mode and actually went through all of them in one go... Aside from Ridley who didn't show up again and ZSS who beat me afterwards. >.<

I don't like frustrating games. This game seems more erratic than previous SSB games which adds to the frustration. I swear there must be critical smash attacks or something because they can come out of nowhere when your damage percentage is low and you're KO'd anyway. Admittedly some of these matches my butt just got kicked, but others I swear I was KO'd out of the middle of nowhere.

There are definitely some challengers with really cheap AI. The only way to really defeat them is by being as unfair as they are.

@rjejr If you open up the game under a different username, you will be starting from scratch with only the basic fighters available. The amiibo fighters should transfer over. If you have amiibo that are not Smash fighters, they will unlock the spirits for those characters.

Wow, I must be getting good. I just unlocked Wario, Lucario and Megaman in quick succession. That makes 46 fighters unlocked. With Wario, I found it best to stay off the ground level because then he'll keep running over you with his motorcycle.

@JDORS What method are you using to unlock characters? I’ve just been doing Classic Mode and Century Smash but have only encountered Lucario of those three.

@PolarExperience I'm just playing Classic Mode and regular Smash matches. Wario showed up randomly. Megaman showed up after using R.O.B. to complete Classic Mode.

JDORS

GeoChrome

@JDORS Ok, I should probably keep doing Classic Mode, then.

I've recently unlocked Simon, Richter, Pichu and Snake. That's 53 fighters now. I beat Snake with Wii Fit Trainer of all people. Diddy Kong and Palutena keep kicking my butt, though.

I just think the spirit mode gets way too ludicrously hard at times. I had to lower the difficulty to easy because some of the conditions they put you in make it seemingly impossible to win.
