Topic: Unlocking new fighters in Smash soon becomes brutally hard

I've been playing Smash today, and I was initially enjoying the process of unlocking each fighter one by one. I didn't do the Spirit Mode, just Classic Mode. But eventually the challenger battles started to get more and more difficult. At this point I have 34 fighters, but I've got serious doubts that I will ever unlock another, much less the entire roster. What in God's name was Nintendo thinking here??? I paid for a game in which 70 fighters were promised and I've only got half. Why does Nintendo not want me to have full access to this game??? Is there any easier way to unlock the entire roster?

@JDORS Unlocking fighters is the whole point of Smash. People were just really spoiled with 4 because it had too many characters available from the start. This is one of the reasons Brawl and the games that came before it are so good. There were actual roster surprises that could only be found by unlocking them yourself.

I hate the notion of unlocking characters as well. Some people want to be "rewarded" (as stupid as this rationale is) with a gradual sense of progression, but I find the whole process needlessly frustrating and arbitrary. I would much rather have had the roster available from the start than to be forced to play through an extensive single-player campaign just so I can render the game multiplayer-ready.

In its current state, I would not play the game with others locally until the majority of the characters are unlocked at the very least.

I would have enjoyed the single player campaign a lot more if it didn't lock away characters (there are plenty of spirits to unlock that would have made up for the roster being unlocked from the start, if they had chosen to go in that direction).

EDIT: Fighters can be unlocked by only playing Smash mode as well, so, there is no one way to unlock everybody, but it's still really frustrating as I'm stuck with a small number of characters that I am just no good with.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@JDORS Do you know you have the option to fight challengers that you have lost against repeatedly until you win. It's in the menus somewhere

@MasterJay Yes, I'm aware of the option to fighter challengers again, and I do this when it becomes available, but it's still wicked hard. I was really, really mad because I was trying to unlock Lucina who happens to be one of my favorite Smash fighters and had gotten beat by her FOUR TIMES. Then, miraculously, I somehow finally won. Then another of my favorites, Pac-Man, was eluding me. But I eventually beat him. With practice, I'm getting more competitive. One thing I've learned is that you need to jump around and dodge the attacks coming your way rather than try to take the AI fighter head on. But it still gets annoying. Isabella keeps beating me with cheap KOs. She uses her fishing line to grab you and throw you over the ledge. Unless your fighter has great recovery, she eventually beats you with this. I think I might need to try Peach against her next time.

@Shizuephan Is World of Light really an easier way to unlock fighters? I just started the mode and haven't gotten far yet. I set it on easy, but the early matches haven't exactly been a cakewalk.

@PolarExperience I don't mind unlocking the fighters one at a time, but I don't understand why there needs to be such a high level of difficulty, especially just halfway through the roster. Does Nintendo really think that everyone is going to be able to unlock all these fighters? They're going to have a lot of unhappy customers.

@Shizuephan I don't fully understand the World of Light mode. How do you add a spirit to your character? I have a number of spirits that I've earned through Classic Mode as well as scanning my own Amiibos, but I don't know how to use them.

This brings up another thing that annoys me: The lack of an instruction booklet. It would have been really useful for a mode like this. I actually brought the Prima guide for Smash and it is really bareboned. There is no mention of any of the game's modes in it. I'm going to try to return it to the store.

@JDORS Is there not an option for spirits before starting a level? I think it's above the "Fight" option.

That or try and equip spirits in the menu (press X on the overworld)

@JDORS So, the game actually tells how how to equip spirits. And how to use modes. And how to do pretty much everything. And there’s a handy Help feature right on the side bar. Try giving that feature a whirl, it has what you’re looking for.
I’ve used Samus and Ness to rematch any lost challengers.

Well, I might be starting to get the hang of this. I just unlocked 3 fighters in quick succession: Simon, Isabella, and Ridley. I did it using Zero Suit Samus. My strategy was to use her plasma whip over and over again. It is a great ranged attack which you can use to hit foes while keeping your distance.

I'm starting to find unlocking characters a little annoying...I'm just playing World of Light to stop them appearing every 5 minutes.

It makes trying new characters a little annoying when Bayonetta and Sonic suddenly want to fight

@JDORS Believe me, I have had a lot of trouble unlocking the characters. It took me about four tries to get Incineroar and another four with Little Mac. I played the game for seven hours, and I don’t even have half of the characters. I still feel that the game is very fun because of this. I enjoy the challenge of unlocking fighters and going through Mob Smash and Classic Mode to even encounter them. Sure, I could just unlock them through World of Light, but that, in my eyes, would take most of the challenge away.
Also, ZSS really is a great character for unlocking fighters. I don’t think she has ever failed to defeat even the toughest newcomers in my experience.

Wario and Lucario are giving me trouble now. Wario somehow knocks me out with punch when I've only got 60% damage. How is that possible? And Lucario has ranged attacks that negate the plasma whip I've been using with Zero Suit Samus.

I think an in between option would've been best, have most of the characters unlocked for use in everything but World of Light when you load up the game and if you want the full unlocking experience you play World of Light.

I actually think it's pretty annoying too that the entire roster is locked away. Only 8 to start with is so stupid. Me and my brother just want to fight each other, but instead we have to spend countless unlocking fighters, meanwhile playing with characters we don't give a crap about. So dumb.

I feel like this was done in an attempt to extend the single player content with unnecessary grinding. People that only play fighting games for the solo player modes aren't true fighting game fans anyways (face it), so it's rather annoying the rest of us must be punished for it.

There is a much quicker way to unlock new challengers here. It's still a lot of work but it's about 5x faster:

I played with Link, the same character I used in the original game, and it took me about a day to get into playing as him (the N64 had different control layout, but Link has the same moves). After that unlocking new characters was only somewhat difficult.

I think the trick is that you need to learn how the enemy works and whether to attack from above or side to side. I had the most problem with weird characters like R.O.B. the robot. Now I get the character on the first encounter about 50 % of the time, if I don't win I usually win the re-fight you can do in the blue menu.

When I read the topic I thought it would be about how Nintendo would patch the game to slow down the unlocking, because I have already 52 unlocked characters.

Oh, and get good op, it's the only way you'll enjoy this game anyways.

You need to face the fact that a game like this isn't financially viable without a broad appeal. Sadly broad appeal means this kind of grindy unlocking.

Although it can be a bit of struggle and time sink to unlock all the characters, it would be super intimidating to newcomers to boot up their first Smash Bros. and have over 70 fighters. Unlocking them slowly allows players to familiarize themselves with a size able portion of the cast before having everyone unlocked.
