@ThanosReXXX Yep, the Neo Geo games. And I still have "BONUS! BONUS! BONUS!" looping through my head thanks to that

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Yeah, sorry about that one.

I reckon that it could even get under the skin of the most avid J-Game and/or anime fan, although personally, I have somehow always been able to dial it out and still enjoy the game.

And then there's the Metal Slug games of course. Personally, it amazes me how solid and entertaining these still are, even after all these years.

Those Japanese women and their childlike voices, though...

But... we're drifting into off-topic areas, so what about that addiction factor of Thumper, aye? Grueling yet still drawing you back in, even though you know you're gonna fail again and again. But that also makes even a low score a giant victory, even if it's only a C rank, or as Jack Septic Eye would put it: a crank...

For all readers, and maybe even still interesting to you as well, I also found this extended gameplay session video:

It puts the game into a slightly broader perspective, because it's being played on PSVR, and once again, like in so many, many reviews, they just keep mentioning how mesmerizing and immersive it is.

Like the excellent points you yourself also mentioned, I can't stress enough how true all of this is. This game is not a game that you should ignore by default if you don't like rhythm games, and graphics don't mean squat in this game, other than having something visual to focus on, so that shouldn't be a deal breaker either.

It is a tough as nails, raw and even quite visceral experience that strangely enough still gives you copious amounts of satisfaction on successfully completing another level, even after having failed again and again, before you finally beat it, albeit with a slightly average score...

Yep, I'm definitely in agreement with most of the written and YouTube reviews. Too bad I don't have a Switch yet and I currently don't have the money to upgrade my PC and sound set either. Guess I'll have to pay that friend who introduced me to Thumper a visit again.

Provided he still has the game, since we played it last year and he regularly erases games he's completed...

@NEStalgia Thanks for the deeper insights. Everything the game tries to do, it accomplishes it well. And for a Switch port it also seems to be one of the good, polished ones. But for the feels there probably is no other way than getting my own hands on it. I hope I find this game to play somewhere at a friend or wait for a demo before spending 20 bucks though. Problem is, I have plenty other Switch games on my radar that I know I will enjoy and this is a 50/50. ^^

Can't wait to see what this HD rumble everyone loves so much is about. lol
Also, luckily for me I got gaming headphones...not expensive ones, but they're still decent.

@ThanosReXXX Haha it's still a fun game even with "BONUS!"....as an R-Type fan I can still appreciate it probably more than most (though it IS a bullet-heck shmup in the worst of ways.) But, dang, I'm pretty sure PC Engine had more storage to fit another audio clip in there for item pickups

Side topic too, THAT video you posted, just the thumbnail picture alone, it's like an argument against VR going mainstream, frozen in time

I wonder if it would have sold better if they renamed it "Expletive Generator '17" As you keep hitting "continue" you not only use every expletive in your vocabulary, but you actually learn to invent all new ones! It keeps replay ability surprisingly high! But it's the first game that combines frustration with mesmerized addiction.

@SKTTR Haha, yeah. Maybe with luck they'll get a demo out there too. Just a few track levels picked from random worlds and a low level boss.... that should hook anyone who will be hooked.

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia PC Engine? Shouldn't that be Neo Geo?

Argh, drifting towards off-topic island again...

Shiver me Thumpers...

@NEStalgia And funny that you should mention that the video thumbnail seems to be an argument against VR, because the guy in the video keeps mentioning how VR adds to the already really addictive nature of the game, and later in the video he goes on to speculate where the next generation of VR is going to lead us to, and he definitely thinks it's here to stay this time.

It is a long video, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. The girl is a better gamer than the guy, and they have an enjoyable chemistry. Also fun to see them interact with the chat stream in between gaming sessions.

@ThanosReXXX Haha, whoops, I meant MVS. I always get confused which arcade board name goes to which of the home version names and interchange them randomly! It's only slightly off topic as this game would be most appropriate in cabinets built for either. I can't help but think of this game as an arcade game. In a different world that's the way it happened, I'm sure of it.

When playing this game (especially when trying to do so handheld where it's really hard to see the tiny targets in the distance) I consider that it would probably be cool in VR. One of the few games that make me think so. And then I see that video and it's like "nope, not a chance." Wires, cables, IEMs and no proper headphones, 10 minute setup (honestly after Swtich reduced setup to 0 seconds, that idea seems even more backwards now), including required help "strapping in" from his couchmate, meanwhile she looks utterly bored to tears as he plays alone and weaves to the flashing lights in his own little world. It's like a chillout room at a rave right in your very own living room!

I admit this game WOULD be cool in VR....but....even that aside....ewww.

Edit: Just got to the part with her playthrough and she was able to use regular headphones....so that's a reassuring plus

Edit 2: Aaaand, then the headphones come off. But I don't have audio so I don't know why.

@NEStalgia You don't have audio? Wùt?

On a side note: if I was that guy, I'd feel pretty much trampled on: after the girl's initial difficulties getting the game mechanics right, she practically beat him in every level. The funniest part of it is that he helped her get through the beginning and after that, she picked it up WAY faster than him.

I can still hear him complain about not being able to get the thumping down right...

@ThanosReXXX No audio on this machine, it's always 1904 on here.

I'd be curious if she is a musician and he is not. I have a feeling anyone that has that innate rhythm timing down that a practiced musician would would immediately have an advantage in the game despite it not being a "music rhythm game"...perhaps especially because it's not (making music from nothing instead of just playing along with it.)

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia I've no idea if she's a musician. I am assuming her to be either a tomboy or, dare I say it, same sex person, but that could just be appearance based, so maybe I'm WAY off there.

Far as I can tell, they've done a lot of these PSVR videos, and more are coming, because they said so at the end. Other than that, I didn't know them before I came across this particular video.

@ThanosReXXX yeah i want sure if in the audio they commented our anything. I'm betting musicians grok the game faster!

I think I've seen these guys before.... maybe a switch review or something.

@ThanosReXXX only one typo... well below average for me when phone typing! (grok was intentional...nerdy but intentional )

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Okay... well call me dense then, because I still didn't get any of that. Maybe the fast rising temperatures over here are getting to me.

By the way, speaking of costing you money: have you already seen that new ACA Neo Geo release for the Switch? It's a great game...

NEStalgia

@ThanosReXXX Ok, ok, two typos, I missed the second one. Never edit text late at night.

LOL.....yeah, I saw it....and I can't see an ACA Neo Geo release without imagining posts from you recommending them, and lo, here one is! Haha, I'm not a fighter fan, and my weekly fighter budget this week is going to SFII-U:ASDFJKL; (I'm not anti-fighter, I'm just not particularly good at them and was never a big fighter player back in the day). I've played SFIV DoA, Injustice, Clay Fighter but never particularly decently. ) But I admit looking at KoF99 I get a sense of nostalgia from seeing it running in the background a few places...it's tempting slightly. But I probably shouldn't buy more than one fighter, especially in one week, and especially when the one I'm buying is so overpriced Besides.....Disgaea 5....

OT: ZOMG World 4.....I can barely keep up with the difficulty spike! Still hard to put it down when stuck but I'm getting stuck a lot more frequently.

@NEStalgia Here's a fun science fact: did you know that the human brain actually doesn't recognize the word "no" or the concept of NOT doing something?

It's the very reason that so few people succeed in setting out what they aim to do, because they explicitly told themselves to NOT do a certain something, like smoke, drink, gain weight or fail.

So, with that in mind, I'm here to tell you that you should just NOT buy that game. You should NOT buy it if you're budget is already spent, especially if you're NOT really a fighting game fan, in which case it's NOT a good idea.

No, seriously man, do NOT buy this game.

P.S.

And I still don't have a clue what THIS is supposed to mean:

Also didn't get the losing audio comment earlier. Was that losing audio on your PC or what?

@NEStalgia As for that difficulty spike: Thumper's creators took that word a bit too literal and simply put some spikes on the track...

Nintendo Network ID: ThanosReXX

NEStalgia

@ThanosReXXX Haha, very interesting. I've never heard of that before. Now I'm going to be thinking about that in relation to observing EVERYTHING everywhere all the time I wonder what the difference is when people DO succeed versus don't?

Hmm, somehow Kof99 is showing on my Switch desktop...how did that happen? (j/k....for now....ugh...now I have to watch the trailer again.... )

Translation of comment: "Yeah, I wasn't sure if in the audio they commented on anything [about either of them being a musician or anything.]. I'm betting musicians grok the game faster!"

And audio: Yeah, I don't have audio at all on this machine, no speakers hooked up except a BT speaker that needs me to go through gyrations to get it to actually connect (and more to stay connected on the right input) so I generally don't bother. So I often tend to watch trailers like they're Charlie Chaplin films until I can get to it on the entertainment laptop

Haha, the spikes on the track didn't mess me up. The lane switching though. I've been playing it handheld often enough and man those lane switches and the upcoming obstacles are brutal. Especially when it has those little pylons to crash through and I can't tell where I am in relation to them and on which lane as they zip by. And i don't even bother going for the blue hoops anymore unless it's mandatory in a boss battle. They get me killed every time.

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Ah, okay. Watching stuff like that sounds like torture to me, like being a deaf mute or something. I wouldn't be able to do that.

As for how people DO succeed in stuff: simply "trick" the brain by formulating the sentence, desire or citing the mantra of that what it is that you want to achieve, in such a way that the word "no" or any other negative wording is no part of it.

For example: don't say "I'm not going to smoke anymore" but simply say, think and memorize "I'm going to quit smoking". Same with losing weight. Imprint your brain with what it is that you ARE going to do, not with what you shouldn't.

If you've ever watched a show like Obese, or The Biggest Loser, then you'll recognize that the trainers/coaches of the contestants actually use such tricks. The main reason why I know about them and know how to use them is because they're also used in sales & marketing to trick people/companies into buying stuff (quicker).

P.S.
So, it appears that you speak Martian: I had to look up the word "grok" because you still didn't explain that one to me...
