Hello Everyone,
I am currently on the fence between purchasing a Switch or an Apple iPad. I have come to you guys because I'm not sure what I want.
Some extra information:
I really enjoy Nintendo games, in fact, one of the big reasons I want a Switch is for the new Zelda and its portability. HOWEVER, I have had situations in the past where I have purchased a Nintendo 3DS and a Wii U, of which I was extremely excited to receive both. When I ended up barely using either. (Especially that 3DS, which I only used for a couple weeks. )
I currently have an iPhone and it would be very useful to have my iTunes and media on an iPad, but I would be sacrificing the ability to play many good Nintendo games.

In a short summary,
an iPad I know for sure I would end up using, but I would not be able to play any triple a games or Nintendo classics which kind of upsets me as I am really into gaming, and much of the AppStore are microtransaction-p2w games that would most likely not live up to my gaming fetish.
I want a Switch really bad, but I would much rather purchase an iPad if I only picked up the console and used it casually for 2-3 weeks.

I am really looking for advice, because I don't know what to do. Can anyone help me out?

If you still own that Wii u you can get breath of the wild on that

When buying tech ask yourself a simple question. What will this let me do that I can't already do?

If you have an iPhone the iPad will let you do the same stuff on a bigger screen. That's about it. A Switch will give you access to content you can't get elsewhere and deliver high end visuals on a portable device. In the end its your money and you know what you want more than anyone here does. But I think one of the devices clearly gives you more given what you already have.

To be honest I would say Switch...

Although it also depend on, are you going to be able to sell the console afterwards? Like if you don't want to touch it again, imo it's better to just resell the console somewhere to another person. If you are at Indonesia-ish, the 2nd hand market is very good, so there's not much problem to just resell..

But the question is, you have iphone, why do you need ipad? Is there things on ipad that will help you? Because so far it's only "it's useful to have itunes/media" on it, and that's same thing with your iphone... and iphone has a ton more to offer!

If the main point is to play games on the systems, I would definitely recommend going with the Switch. No question. I'm fortunate enough to own both, but I don't think I've played a single game on my iPad throughout its life (approx. 3-years).

If you are buying it for utility though, that's another question entirely.

I picked up an Ipad because I was on so many business trips and I wanted to watch movies, sports, and listen to music on the go. The extra screen space was the selling point. I soon realized that it was a big waste and received a refund. Barely has any storage, way over priced, and was totally fine just watching movies and listening to music on my phone, laptop, or hotel tv.

I picked up a Switch at launch and enjoy playing games at home or on the road. I'm hoping it does get some new media apps soon, but even without them the games are a lot of fun.

It’s hard to say because both are great pieces of kit but completely different. As others have pointed out though there isn’t much you can do on your iPad that you can’t do on your switch.

Hiya !
Simple, just buy Nintendo Switch if you want to play Nintendo games.
Forget Ipad, too expensive, not for gaming actually.
And you can show your Nintendo Switch to public so they will know about Nintendo Switch existence.
Don't be afraid to be a gamer that can play until 100+ hours by total.
Me, myself, has A Lot of Nintendo games from NDS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, Gamecube and Switch. Sometimes i play not more than 1 hour if i'm very busy but still spend at least 1 day for play my Nintendo games.
Btw, what genre of games that captivated you ? RPG / 3D Platformer / Puzzle / Strategy / Rhythm / Simulation / Racing / Spirt / Party games / Adventure ?
Show that you are a Nintendo gamer !

I have both and really enjoy them both - as well as an iPhone. The iPad is great for point'n'click adventures, like Thimbleweed Park and Broken Age, and has a handful of really good games that you can't play on a phone (eg Papers, Please; Faster Than Light; and the Spiderweb RPGs).

However, while you can play action games on iOS, and there are some really good ones, the Switch has it beat hands down. First of all, the controls: the Joy-cons are so much better than any MFi controller. And second, the games - obviously. The Switch has the best games developer in the world devoted to it (Nintendo itself), and nothing on iOS can hold a candle to Zelda, Odyssey or Spla2oon.

tl;dr If you want to play games, get a Switch.

If you're looking for a dedicated gaming device, then an iPad shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as a Nintendo device. iOS games are generally of a poor quality and/or riddled with microtransactions. Ironically, the best games on iOS are 10+ year old games that were originally released on PS2 or the DS. No developer in their right mind would create such games from scratch for a userbase spoiled by throwaway F2P games and entitled morons who think that US$10 for a brand new Mario game without any microtransactions whatsoever is "too expensive".

However, if you intend to use the iPad mainly for non-gaming tasks, then only then should you consider buying one over a Switch. Most of what you can do with an iPad you can do with an iPhone anyway, especially if you have a recent model.

Honestly, if you already have an iPhone, even if you just played Zelda (which you could also play on your WiiU btw), a Switch is the better option. Only if you care that much about the bigger screen (and NOTHING more), like I do, I‘d even consider an iPad.

Buy a Switch AND a cheap Android tablet with the money you would save buying a single iPad.

It happens that I have both. I don’t use the iPad anymore since I have my iPhone. Now the iPad belongs to my mum. I’ll go Switch all the way. I’m not a heavy gamer but I play on the Switch almost every day. I also happen to have 3 AAA games: Zelda BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 deluxe. You’ll die before seing any of those games on mobile. Nintendo rules!

I would get the Switch because it offers a unique experience that you won't find on another console or mobile device anytime soon.

If you want to have something to use for the internet and music then use your phone! There are also android tablets available that are cheaper (and better!) than an iPad, but if you're already invested in the apple "ecosystem" then that makes sense.

Thank you for the many replies! 90% said go Switch, and I will do so. Let you guys know how it goes .

Go with the Switch and put aside $20-$50 per month for the iPad.

@bluecreeper111 Hang on a minute.

Switch is great, no question.

But the 3DS and Wii U also have many great gaming experiences on them, and you've not been inclined to pursue them.

Sounds like you're not into gaming as much as you are into the idea of gaming/new gadgets.

If didn't get value from your 3DS and Wii U, I'm not sure why you'd get a much different experience with the Switch - it doesn't even have a web browser.

Get the iPad.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@gcunit
True, but I say to the OP: get neither and save your money.

As others have said, it sounds like you enjoy the IDEA of gaming, but you don't seem to game very much in actuality (at least on your Nintendo hardware, one of which is already portable). So I wouldn't blow 300 bucks on something you're probably not gonna use, and the portability likely isn't going to change the situation because you didn't play your 3DS much.

I also wouldn't get the iPad because you already have an iPhone, and like @skywake said, that's basically the same thing just with a bigger screen. You'd be paying lots of money for a bigger screen. The only reason I'd get an iPad would be if I lacked some other computer option in my life.

bluecreeper111

Yes that may be true @gcunit and @rallydefault,
my issue with the Wii U/ 3DS is I never use them while im at home, as I have a computer and I often use that to game when I am at home. I am primarily looking for a device to use at my condo in the States, or on the long road trip inbetween. So generally something portable, which I thought the Switch would be good for. But maybe the iPad would be better, im not sure. What do you think?

@bluecreeper111 Why didn't you play the 3DS more?
