I think we can all agree that the details about the Switch launch were fairly underwhelming with with a fairly expensive price, and bare-bones launch titles. That being said, the Switch is by no means DOA. I actually think it can still be a success, but not at launch. I see this as being like the DS or the 3DS where they start off slow, with sluggish sales and little fanfare. Then following a price cut and big-name titles, pick up steam and start catching on with the masses. I don't see Wii U failure in this since it looks nowhere near as poorly designed and marketed as it's predecessor. It may not do Wii numbers off the bat, but I feel it can definitely succeed where the Wii U failed.
Breath of the Wild as one game is a better idea to sell a console than the entirety of 3DS or Wii U's launch libraries, let's be honest. (at least in terms of games anyone knows/cares is coming to the new Nintendo hardware)
I do think Nintendo is planning to build up to the holiday season more than expecting incredible sales for a MARCH RELEASE DATE.
The marketing is good, it has no direct competition as an HD handheld system, and it has Zelda at launch. All they need to do is make commercials of Zelda, show up at E3, and nail this holiday. Seriously, there was some figure floating around like they expected only 2 million users at launch. I think Zelda can easily get them there.
There are so many games they could announce at E3 with all of Nintendo's studios focused upon a single device. They could just drop Smash Bros at their event and bid people to have at it.
GC: Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race
DS: Super Mario 64 DS
Wii: Excite Truck, Wii Play, Wii Sports, Zelda:TP
3DS: Nintendogs + Cats, Pilotwings, Steel Diver
Wii U: New SMB U, Nintendo Land
Switch: Zelda: BotW, 1-2 Switch
Lets not get the doom on just because we didn't get a Wii launch 2.0. And honestly, I'd take Zelda at launch over just about any other game. As was previously said the Switch already has a library that runs rings around the Wii U's first year. Not a huge bar but still.
I mean, they are trying to repeat the Wii launch: Zelda + party game. The Xbox One launch was a disaster too, but it also sort of managed to recover. I still think the Switch will do fine in the end, but the price, launch and all are just not something to get excited over, and that's a bummer. I had low expectations, but Nintendo still managed to not meet those.
I'm sorry, but most of you guys are way off the mark. You are WAY underestimating what a Zelda title at launch is going to do. I know it's the job of any collection of people like this to put their heads together and nitpick the holy handbags out of something, but you're missing the forest because of the trees.
I went on Amazon last night and couldn't even preorder Zelda - they were sold out of physical copies (normal edition). I'll say again: you're being a bit blind to the legs Zelda can potentially give to this system.
