@Cobalt

Can I assume by “the trend” you mean spending their own money on something they like? Shocking news to wake up to.

@BenGrimm

To assume, is not your strongest point apparently. ^^

My bad, I prefer snide comments and talking in riddles myself 🤗

This is why fanboys come here because they can't seem to fathom "Ports" are ports of another game they play on their own system but when Switch "Ports" it irks their bunhole because someone can beat them at their own games.

Like I’ve said before. If you enjoy buying games more than once, good luck to you and enjoy your purchases. I mean that.

Don’t expect me to pretend to be excited about ports and for me not to have an opinion on the subject. That what a forum is for.

they say that life’s a carousel, spinning fast you’ve got to ride it well. The world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams. It’s heaven and hell.

Quite a hostile atmosphere in this thread just because some of us have dared to question the merit of ports on the switch.

No one is hostile over some folk not liking ports of great games. I think most take issue with being told they should be silenced asking for games. Which is fair enough I would venture.

@Bevinator I don’t think anyone here is expecting you or anyone else to be excited about ports just because others enjoy them, but there’s a difference between that and, like the OP, asking people to stop wanting and enjoying ports.

One can enjoy both ports and new games. Obviously we get both of those things with the Switch, as well as with other consoles.

As I said in another thread when discussing ports: there’s no evidence we’re not getting new games because of the ports. Actually we have got more new exclusives and Nintendo first party titles than ports since the launch of Switch:

March 2017:
Breath of the Wild (released the same day as the Wii U version, therefore not a port, so while not console exclusive, I count it as new - it’s more synonymous with the Switch anyway) - new
1-2-Switch - new

April 2017:
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - port (Wii U)

May 2017:
ARMS - new

June 2017:

July 2017:
Splatoon 2 - new

August 2017:
Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle (third party exclusive) - new

September 2017:
Pokken Tournament - port (Wii U)

October 2017:
Fire Emblem Warriors (not console exclusive as it also was released on 3DS, but it was simultaneously and the Switch version sold a lot more - anyway, it should be counted as a new game) - new
Super Mario Odyssey - new

November 2017:
Snipperclips Plus - new

December 2017:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - new

January 2018:

February 2018:
Bayonetta 1 + 2 - port (Wii U)

March 2018:
Kirby: Star Allies - new

April 2018:
Nintendo LABO - new

May 2018:
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - port (Wii U)
Hyrule Warriors - port (combined content from Wii U and 3DS versions)

June 2018:
Mario Tennis Aces - new
Sushi Striker (also a case of simultaneous release on Switch/3DS, but it’s nontheless a new game) - new

July 2018:
Captain Toad - port (Wii U)
Octopath Traveler (third party exclusive) - new

August 2018:
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (seeing as this previously only was released in Japan, it could be considered new here in the West, but let us be fair and call it a port) - port (3DS)

September 2018:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna (could be dismissed as just an expansion, but it’s a full game in itself so we could count it as new) - ”new”

October 2018:
Super Mario Party - new
The World Ends With You: Final Remix (could be considered new as it’s been remade for the Switch - it’s not just a straight up port, but OK, we can call it half new/half port) - new/port (DS)

November 2018:
Pokemon Let's Go - new
Civilization VI (third party console exclusive) - kinda port/kinda new
Starlink: Battle for Atlas (third party, not exclusive, but released simultaneously as other versions, with exclusive Nintendo content, so I put it here) - new, not exclusive, but with exclusive content

December 2018:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - new

So... what do we got between March 2017-December 2018?

13 new games. (Add LABO and it’s 14. Add BotW and it’s 15. Add Fire Emblem Warriors, Sushi Striker and Starlink and you got 18. Add XC2: Torna and it’s 19. Add Civ VI and it’s 20. Add TWEWY and it’s 21.)

7 ports. (Count Civ VI and TWEWY as ports and you got 9. Count BotW as a port and you get 10.)

What we can see is that the Switch has got both new and exclusive games AND ports. I can’t see how the ports have stopped the release of new games, as new games have been released. And if you take away the ports, would there be new games taking their place? I don’t think so. While ports are easy to make, new games takes time to develop. It’s one thing if you rush out new games, but that’s usually not Nintendo’s tactic. Even lesser games like Sushi Striker or Mario Tennis contains a high level of polish. If one enjoy the games or not is beside the point, that is just subjective.

[...]

I count games released simultaneously on several platforms as new to the Switch, just the same way as I for example would count Red Dead Redemption 2 as a new game for the Xbox One, though it also was released on PS4 at the same day. Therefore Fire Emblem Warriors is a new game.

I might have missed some games (be it new exclusives or Nintendo first parties or ports of Nintendo first parties), but as you can see: there are plenty of new games here and then I haven’t counted indies, older-titles-but-new-on-a-Nintendo-console or the upcoming exclusive titles.

It sometimes feels as if people are trying to downplay Switch, a console that haven’t been on the market for two years yet, because of the ports. But if you look at the bigger picture, it’s easy to see that Switch has got a lot of new games in that timeframe. And other consoles have had their fair share of ports as well. It’s not unique for Nintendo.

The post at the top of this page seems quite hostile to me

Ye, but it's not aimed at 'the merits of ports', it's more aimed at basically being told to shut up (read the title)

Perhaps a mod should have adjusted the title to make it less emotive. For the record I don’t endorse the terminology in the title of the thread.

It’s a legitimate topic of discussion all the same (by which I mean ports on the switch)

@Bevinator Report the posts if you find them hostile.

I agree with you that one should be able to criticize the merit of ports, but I think the OP rubbed some people the wrong way with his post, saying that we are port beggars and we need to stop with the ”begging”.

How many times do you hear someone say "...emulation is ok because the companies don't give us ways to play the game..." Well, surely ports address this, and particularly those into their emulation should indeed be asking for more ports so they can play the games?

With the Wii Shop Channel leaving, stuff as basic as Smash 64 will no longer be accessible digitally.
It's not that they aren't giving us ways, they are also actively taking them away.

I’m ok with older games getting ports infact I think it’s a good idea. Just not games that are a few years old getting rereleased for 50 or 60 quid @Seacliff
