Topic: The NX's uphill climb (and your solution to it)

We all have special connections to the consoles we grew up with. And although I probably played 3/4th of the NES library (I was a spoiled kid), my obsession with video games in my mind dates back to the SNES, not the NES. Probably because of age (I was just turning 8 when SNES launched), but I just don't look back as fondly at those numerous brutal Mega Man outings as I do the adventures I had on SNES.

Anyways, what I'm getting at is that I have a very specific type of memory with my 3 favorite consoles of all time, while playing them on the first day I had them. Those consoles are SNES, N64, and PS1. That feeling was that what I was playing was unprecedented, and that there was nowhere else I could get this experience.

Now, as time goes on and technology gets better and better, closing the gap between consoles generations and reducing the WOW factor of each launch, all 3 console makers are finding it tough that give that feeling of awe we used to get with new consoles. PS4 games simply feel like PS3 games with a little bit better graphics, pretty much (so far). But, while all 3 companies are experiencing this problem, Nintendo has it the worst, since they not only intentionally release hardware that seems to either equal or slightly best the other guys' PREVIOUS console- But they're almost becoming DEFINED by that.

Judging by the Wii U's ultra safe, 2d platformer-stacked library, it almost seemed even Nintendo itself has succumbed to this idea of "We're the less powerful guys, so let's not try to innovate with the software and just play it safe with what's worked". Previously, Nintendo was cutting edge. They were always releasing things that wow'ed you. (Even Mario Galaxy qualifies, so this wasn't that long ago!) Now, they try to wow you on the hardware side, but play it safe on the software side. That's backwards.

So, the NX needs to have that SPECIAL software that makes you HAVE to have it. While Nintendo is very good at showing us what we didn't even know we wanted, what do you think would do that for you with the NX were it to release today?

The top choice for me is an innovative Zelda. And I actually have very big hopes that this is what we are going to get. It was pulled for a reason. I really think Miyamoto "upended another tea table" when he came to the realization that they needed a special piece of software to launch with NX (I still think it'll be U/NX cross platform, just my opinion) that was special. I think Zelda wasn't yet ready to wow us, but that it had a very good base to build off of and that's what they are doing now as they transfer it over to NX.

We know their development teams are doing something other than Wii U/3DS games, as shown by the poor E3 showing, so hopefully they're all hard at work on multiple launch titles. I just have a bad feeling that their attitude will be "Don't release everything at once, get a steady drip" blah blah which will result in a game every 4 months or whatever, but I think a HUGE launch is necessary to get them back in this thing. For me, a launch with the new Zelda, new 3D Mario (64/Sunshine/Galaxy ish, NOT 3D World ish PLEASE!), as well as either an F Zero or Metroid would be perfect. A 3 headed monster of great quality software everyone loves. It's hard to not want to pick up a system that is launching with that lineup!

Anyways, what would be the 1 or 2 ( or 3! ) pieces of software that would impress you so much that you absolutely had to have the console at launch, since Nintendo is no longer participating in the technology arms race, and therefore unable to impress with simply hardware?

I would love to see Nintendo do more interesting things with their IP's. Zelda U looks like it's on that track, but franchises like Mario and Metroid are left out. I'd love to see Nintendo create a Mario game on the same level as Super Mario 64. A big and open Mario game with many interesting levels and places to explore, and a Metroid game where you have more freedom to explore a dangerous planet.

I also think a lot of the stuff that they showed on Treehouse at E3 2 years ago seemed very interesting, and I'm hoping those concepts will be utilized for a new IP that will release on the NX.

@Dankykong ,

As for my other thread, HEH, yeah I did post it again because people need to realize it. Want proof? Look at @Darth_Vader 's post under you. He calls it an "unpopular opinion" because him and 2 of his friends probably enjoy the game. Nevermind the fact that it's the worst selling Nintendo home console of all time that is called a machine for kids, it's obviously an unpopular opinion because he thinks so, lol...
